Reading Festival Drama

DD 17 is at Reading for the first time has called us to say tent has leaked all bedding and all clothes are soaked. We are 2.5 hrs away and debating driving to take her to a launderette and give her dry bedding to then sleep in her mates tent. She has been hyped for months so feeling bad for her. Any seasoned Reading parents have any other brain waves?!!

Out of interest, is there a lower age limit for Reading?

I saw him too. Was it the same year as Daphne and Celeste when people were throwing bottles at them!

No but I was there that year too, that was my first Reading! 2000.

We had so many great bands back then. Many still around now or became very famous

I can hear the festival now the music is carrying a fair way in the wind this year

I was at v that year - camped in a leaky tent, slept on a wet camp bed. But had the best time! I figured my skin and clothes would dry eventually!

Weren’t they on just before Slipknot?! That was a great year - my first Reading festival. We would walk down to Marks and Sparks in the morning for a wash and a poop!

Two of my dds are there one has now got a broken phone due to rain and a flooded tent and the other replied ‘ish’ to is your tent dry ?…
some of their group have given up and come home but they seem to still be having lots of fun ( can’t think of anything worse but I’m not a camper )
@dustabsorber think its 16 to go without an adult. The younger of the two of mine there has just turned 16.

Leave her to it. She needs to learn how to solve these small problems for herself.

Im.commenting to back up the poster who said they sat their Gcses after Glastonbury

In 1994 my friend had to sit a gcse the Monday after our first Glastonbury I remember it still !!

I hope op you just told her to go buy a new sleeping bag on site. I honestly think it was better pre phone when we resolved these things in the moment.

Just curious, some girls got on the bus I was on, definitely in festival gear. The bus goes to Reading, so they were obviously going to the festival. They claimed to be under 16 to get a free bus ride. I thought age must be a contextual variable.

My 16yo DD is there too and has messaged a couple of times about minor issues. I think it’s just an excuse - and perhaps not something she’s even realised - to check in with me and have some reassurance and a gushy message from me. Everyone she’s with is also 16 and, whilst she’s known many of them for years and they all appear really sophisticated and independent, they are all knackered, damp, hungry, some drunk or hungover and not having their usual creature comforts to hand so getting a bit cranky. DD was lucky a primary school as her Yr5 residential happened before first lockdown and, amazingly, they managed to fit in the Yr6 residential. DD couldn’t go on the Yr7 residential though as she had Covid and, other than DofE, she hasn’t actually been on any overnight school trips at secondary as most of them took a while to get back up & running and then either related to sports or subjects DD wasn’t doing or was a ski trip which we couldn’t afford. DD has been on plenty of sleepovers with her friends but that’s very different to spending several days together in very close proximity.

Yes we went into town one year in the morning (was either 2000 or 2001) as it was so hot we just wanted to get in some air con in the oracle before heading back 🤣

Might be easier to buy a new sleeping bag and clothes from town. If she wants somewhere dry and welcoming, Reading Street Pastors have tents (small marquees) on Orange and Brown camp sites. They have sofas, power and snacks/hot drinks. Lovingly nicknamed the God Tent by festival goers. Open and staffed 24 hours a day.

I still go to festivals now but the Reading lineup has been terrible for many years. The kids can keep it

The lineup is just aimed at kids, same as it was in 97 😊

That was my first festival, did go to Leeds a few years back just for the day for Eminem but I wouldn’t camp there these days, leave that for the kids.
