DD 17 is at Reading for the first time has called us to say tent has leaked all bedding and all clothes are soaked. We are 2.5 hrs away and debating driving to take her to a launderette and give her dry bedding to then sleep in her mates tent. She has been hyped for months so feeling bad for her. Any seasoned Reading parents have any other brain waves?!!

How times have changed. When I was a teenager, the last people I would have contacted would have been my parents. For fear they'd insist I came home! My daughters first instinct is to call me for all inconveniences and dramas!

When I went I didn’t even have a phone … so would have had to get on with it 🤷🏻‍♀️

No but I was there that year too, that was my first Reading! 2000.

The burger van shenanigans were 2001, cracking line up

Oh God … I was there that year too lol

GreyhpundGirl · 30/08/2026 19:37

I went to my irst Reading Festival at 17 in 1994 and went for 20 years- the days before mobile phones and ringing parents. My friend's tent did the same. They went into town and bought more stuff- the town is prepped for the festival weekend.

Snowleopardsspots · 30/08/2026 19:39

She will be fine. It’s nice she has a friends tent she can stay in.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 30/08/2026 19:49

Top tip going forward- decathlon do these really good and pretty cheap waterproof bags between 40-90L) that have rucksack type straps so easy to carry. At least then clothes and personal effects stay dry. My kids currently use them for wholesome stuff like outward bound 😂 but as from next year ( DS turns 16) I suspect they will be going to Leeds

It’s all part of the Festival experience!

Second this.

No wonder young people of today grow up with no resilience or problem solving skills if they need mummy and daddy to pander to their every obstacle.

I grew up going to Leeds festival most summers in the 2000’s. If shit got wet, then shit got wet. Nobody contacted their parents mid-way through. We drank, got high and just dealt with it.

CelestialCandyfloss · 30/08/2026 20:08

Just get pissed and find a nice boy (or girl if that persuasion) who you can get off with and go in their tent. Or stay up all night. Those would have been my thoughts when I went to Reading in the '90's 😂 actually maybe don't take that advice lol

Squirrelsnut · 30/08/2026 20:08

I went in 1992, it was an absolute mud bath! If I'd rung my parents, their incredulity would have been hilarious.

I mean we were nothing if not pragmatic 😂

And me, I was going in the '90's...And if you lost your mates you'd make new ones 😂😂 or wait hours by the sodding noticeboards til someone found you 😂

😂😂😂 and our parents knew absolutely nothing about any of it 😂

Comeonbabylightmyaga · 30/08/2026 20:18

Did you go to festivals as a teen @Susue999 ?

Greebo13 · 30/08/2026 20:21

It’s all part of the experience. We’ve been at festivals and had our belongings floating out the tent!
There will be stalls at the festival where she can buy clothes and blankets etc. The bonus of Reading festival is that it’s fairly close to the city. She can pop into the shops or launderette if necessary.

Motherofacertainage · 30/08/2026 20:22

Not recommended for your DD but I once went without a ticket OR a tent (or much money) , blagged my way in, met up with friends, drank other people’s booze, copped off with someone and therefore had a “bed” for the night. Came a cropper however as in those days at least there was a second barrier into the actual bands so I couldn’t get into that bit! To this day I have not consulted my parents about any of this!!

You'd have found that tricky. Glastonbury is at the end of June

In 1990 (the only year I looked at) there were 2 GCSE exams after Glastonbury ended *according to google AI though so will take with a pinch of salt.

I’m inclined to believe the previous poster though because why not 🤷‍♀️

Shes an adult, leave her to it. No wonder Gen X can’t cope with real life if this is parenting nowadays!

Gen X are approximately between 45-60 years old

The dd is Gen Z.

If you're going to be ageist and base your world view on stereotypes created by the media at least know what you're talking about.

BeWittyRobin · 30/08/2026 20:52

If you were down the road maybe I would pop by and help but 2.5hrs away is a 5hr round trip. She’s 17, clearly independent as she has gone to the reading festival. I’ve a 17 year old who is at Leeds festival this weekend I’m about an hr 20mins away and if this happened to her I’d prob say she will dry or have ended up wet anyway due the the crap weather 🙈. The most I would do is point her in the right direction of a laundrette and an Argos or similar. If she needed a bit of money as it’s an unplanned expenditure then send it but I wouldn’t be going to in essence do what she can do herself

Happyjoe · 30/08/2026 21:08

She will figure it out - no way should you drive all that way! It's called problem solving, lol, a great life skill. She will look back on the memory with fondness. Nothing wrong with a laundrette, or loan of money so she can go shopping for some warmer, drier stuff.

Last time went to Glastonbury in the 90's, we had everything stolen, everything but considered ourselves lucky because the tent next door had everything taken including the tent. All we had was a bit of cash in our pockets and the drink and some food in the back of the car we'd not taken out yet. We stayed all weekend then sold the booze to raise funds to get the petrol to drive from Somerset to Brighton. We made it, apart from the last 5 miles, lol.

Lol, this is the kind of post every mother wants to read 😂

LabOwner95 · 30/08/2026 21:15

If she wants to stay, she needs to sort it herself.

If she wants to leave, you can pick him up.

FairActivitySplit · 30/08/2026 21:18

My DSD had a similar experience at a festival, I drove for 3 hours (6 hours round trip!) to take her clean bedding, clothes and snacks as she was beside herself. I didn’t want her experience ruined as she had saved hard to go!

Must have been a popular year!

Im watching it live on bbc iplayer and they’re very lucky at the moment… Florence and the machine have a very long stage. They’re all
singing along phone lights in the air.

No rain- yet. I’m a few miles away and it’s bucketing down! Hope it doesn’t get to them they’ll get soaked.

ChaliceinWonderland · 30/08/2026 21:31

I'm at Reading working. It's a mud bath. Lots have gone home.
Just go to the first aid tent
They have helped loads of kids.
