Help needed to find a cheap black suit for Prom

Yellowflowers7 · 07/06/2024 19:06

He's still growing and won't be going to sixth form but needs a suit for his prom. So I don't want to spend too much money on it. Slim fit single breast. Help me, I come from a family of women and have no idea about suits!

Asos. Loads and loads of prom suits!

space99 · 07/06/2024 19:09

If you don’t want to spend much, I would look at Primark, Matalan or ASOS.

John Lewis do a black starter suit for about £100. Otherwise I would look at Primark, Vinted or eBay for an outgrown one.

What size is he? What is your budget? Maybe we can help you source one.

Do you have a local place which hires dinner suits and all the trimmings? We rented one for our son at about £50.

ElizaDoolittleAndOften · 07/06/2024 19:18

Sorry, I feel like I am stalking you now.

Go into a M&S or John Lewis and try them on him. What waist is he? What length of trousers.? E.g. 32 waist, 32 length - 32R. What size jacket is he? Is he over 6 foot? If so he needs a long jacket. Otherwise is he a regular or short? What collar is he? Does he need a slim fit, or regular?

Then have a look on the websites. I just looked quickly on Vinted, as I have it permanently open as I am selling a lot of things, and there were loads, but you need to know his sizes.

Thanks for all your input! Really appreciate it. Just having my dinner and will respond. Ideally cheap as he will only wear it once,no idea what size, will need to measure him...

Definitely vinted.

BumBumCream · 07/06/2024 19:32

ElizaDoolittle is spot on, try on some common brand on the high street & buy it on Vinted. FB marketplace also has some.

rookiemere · 07/06/2024 19:36

Have you tried FB or is there a school selling page ? Bound to be loads from last year that no longer fit.

Cantthinkofadifferentname · 07/06/2024 19:36

I bought my DS a suit for £20 off eBay

Yellowflowers7 · 07/06/2024 19:42

Sorry I should have made clear. DS has ASD and OCD so I don't think he would accept anything secondhand unfortunately- which is a shame as I am the queen of Vinted! Our neighbour has given me her sons prom suits which is blue and he won't entertain the idea of wearing it. I guess I need to find a cheap black suit which looks more expensive than it is. At least I could flog it afterwards whereas if I hire one it will be very expensive

Vinted or shein. I bought my eldest a suit for a funeral from shein, jacket, trousers and waistcoat, £19 and it looks as nice as the M&S ones.

Yellowflowers7 · 07/06/2024 19:44

Maybe I go to Next, get his sizing and then look for cheaper brands?

Burton x

thismummydrinksgin · 07/06/2024 19:44

I got my son one off burton for £60, but Primark do them too. If you get off counted check they haven't been altered x

itsabitdamp · 07/06/2024 19:47

Vinted. I've just sold one on there for a tenner (worn once for a prom)

OldTinHat · 07/06/2024 19:48

Matalan.

itsabitdamp · 07/06/2024 19:50

Sorry just saw your post about not wanting second hand. Can't you look for one on vinted and tell him it's unworn? I'd be trying all sorts of trickery to avoid paying full whack.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/06/2024 19:53

Asda

Rainbow1901 · 07/06/2024 20:06

On Vinted you can specify with tags - so it should be new - hopefully that will convince your lad!!

NotMeNoNo · 07/06/2024 20:08

Next are good for small sizes and they do have some cheaper ranges - order quick though.

ElizaDoolittleAndOften · 07/06/2024 20:09

Primark actually do some nice suits and shirts.

maw1681 · 07/06/2024 20:10

Try primark, DH has some work trousers from there and honestly they're great quality for the price.
