I know he smokes and vapes but I just have a feeling it may lead in to weed. But what should I be looking out for?

Red eyes
Spaced out or giggly
Late night munchies
And of course the smell (more so with green, hash doesn't have much of a smell to it)

Ozberry · 01/08/2021 19:29

The smell. It stinks to high heaven. Also looking dopey round the eyes. Disappearing straight upstairs when he gets home (trying to avoid you).

iamtheoneandonlyyy · 01/08/2021 19:43

A sudden increase in toast consumption

TabithaTiger · 01/08/2021 19:44

Apart from the smell (as teens are quite good at hiding that), the things to look out for are being exceptionally tired in the mornings, moodiness, secretive behaviour (my DS suddenly took to going out for late night walks for some 'fresh air before bed' Hmm), always carrying a rucksack everywhere (to carry their stash, grinder, rizla, etc), general lethargy and lack of interest in doing anything.

It's not always easy to spot the signs as most of the above is pretty normal for teens. Also, look out for tiny holes/ burns in their clothes.

They all seem to smoke weed, I can't stand the stuff. I know plenty of people smoke it socially with no issue, but I've seen some people who are completely hooked on the stuff and its really affected their mental health. I think it's more of a problem when they're young teens as their brains aren't fully developed.

Meltinthemiddle · 01/08/2021 20:11

Hmm he does go out for late night walks. Normally comes back stinking of smoke. He's not eating alot, going out and skipping meals.

Decline in mental health, loss of interest in everything, tiredness, lethargic, moody and the awful smell 🤮

TabithaTiger · 01/08/2021 20:16

Yeah that doesn't sound good. My DS1 used to skip meals, but then full up on loads of junk and sugar late at night. He looked awful, really pale and skinny. How old is your DS?

gettingalife · 01/08/2021 20:21

Exactly what @tabithatiger said. The rucksack is the give away but also the late evening 'walks' while wearing it. A fair few emotional meltdowns during the day are giveaways. Plus the lies and ability to get through cash quickly....

Ozberry · 01/08/2021 20:35

Yep, all that gettingalife said. The late night ‘walks’ are suss. Moodiness, but what teen isn’t moody. Being sneaky with money. And also who they are hanging around with. You get a feel about their friends. It’s a lifestyle that you are looking out for really.

FTEngineerM · 01/08/2021 20:35

Ask him?

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/08/2021 20:37

You can smell it a mile off.

Babiii · 01/08/2021 20:40

I used to smoke, I was super super lazy, lost interest in all of what I enjoyed doing, used to hide away from everyone with the same TV program on, eating loads in private, snappy when I wanted to smoke.

MaryBoBary · 01/08/2021 22:42

Maybe he's just smoking cigarettes? You say he smells of smoke, do you already know he smokes cigarettes? When I was a teenager smoking weed I walked the dog multiple times a day and had hay fever 12 months of the year. Until those eye drops came out. So if you spot brightening eye drops in his room that could be a clue. Also it makes you cough and need a drink so is he taking a drink with him on his late night walks?
Ultimately, he's at an age where he knows the risks and will do it whether you lecture him about it or not (if that's what he's doing). I'd just leave it and not say anything, as long as it's not having any noticeable bad effects on his life eg not doing as well as school, becoming isolated, not wanting to do things he usually would.

wrinklesandcream · 02/08/2021 09:01

It stinks

wrinklesandcream · 02/08/2021 09:01

I hate the smell and you can smell it a mile off
Horrible smell

wrinklesandcream · 02/08/2021 09:05

And all the other stuff everyone on here has said but handle carefully as teens can be very crafty.

wrinklesandcream · 02/08/2021 09:06

My dd recently said the more I don't want her to do something the more likely she is going to do.
Cheeky mare!

HerMammy · 02/08/2021 09:08

It’s a bit of a leap that because he vapes/smokes it’ll be weed next!
Millions of ppl smoke and never touch weed, calm down!

I am calm thank you! I'm just asking what to look out for as I'm concerned about him and wondering if he could be smoking weed. He does stink but I wouldn't say its weed, not sure if it's his vape as can't describe it.

Sounds Patronising to say calm down! She is just asking for advice on a support thread?
HerMammy · 02/08/2021 11:09

Not patronising at all, just the usual MN Ott parent.

God I'd hate to be friends with you. Are you a troll or just not nice
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/08/2021 13:13

It reeks, absolutely stinks.

Meltinthemiddle · 02/08/2021 14:44

Actually it was mum's instinct and I was right. Heart broken 💔. The worse thing is he says he isn't paying for it. He's 16 and really vulnerable with mild learning difficulties. I don't know what to do. I found a black tube with little plastic bag one with a cannabis plant on it. 5 empty bags in total.
