Daughter wants belly piercing

My 15yo is going on and on about having a belly button piercing. It's relentless and she just wants it done as friends are having it done. Any advice from experienced mums on the issue? I'm really not keen and it's causing friction I don't want

I had mine done at 13 after relentlessly badgering my poor mother, that nearly ended in divorce for my parents Blush. Didn't hurt, never got infected. I still have it 19 years later and its just part of me. Piercings can be taken out if desired, at 15 I'd probably let her.

It's not a battle I'd bother with - let her have it, but remind her it is super important to look after it or it goes horribly wrong! Hopefully she stays not sure.

I had mine done at 18 didn't hurt, no infection and nearly 20 years later still have it.

Got mine done during lunch time from work many years ago. Loved it but it didn't love me. It was always stuck so it was a job to turn it and clean it. When I got pregnant I decided to take it out but I had to get Dh to do it as I couldn't turn the ball to open it. Everytime he came near it I'd scream as I was sure it was going to hurt. Such a faff. I do like them but cringe at the thought of having one myself now. It would be lost in the deflated skin following 4 big baby bellies/c sections Grin. But I do have the little scars to show for it.

I had mine done in my early twenties and it hurt like hell, it bled , got infected despite cleaning as reccomended, got caught all the time on things, the ball would just randomly fall off the bar and eventually it started smelling weird and growing out and I just removed it. I now have a weird scar in my stomach, with odd holes. I'd be showing her this thread to see if the reality of it for some would change her mind.

I thought about it but was concerned that with the first puncture I would be whizzing about the room like one of those rocket balloons - with the associated noises!

I had mine done at 14/15, it didn't hurt a bit and unlike all the other ill-advised piercings I had at that age it healed really quickly too! I'd let her get it done and make sure she goes somewhere reputable.

goddessofmischief · 14/07/2021 21:47

I had mine done at 15. Went on to get the bottom of it done too, years later. As long it's done by a professional, fair enough. Fashion and "cringe" be damned.

I had my belly button pierced when I was about 16, I was definitely in the sixth form and 2 friends and I went in to the next town on the bus after school To get it done.

I didn’t tell my parents immediately and when I did, I thought my mum would flip out, but she immediately took the attitude it wasn’t a battle worth fighting, it was done, her only concern was if the place was clean (which it was, a reputable piercing and tattoo place).

My stomach is not anything I would want to show off now, but I’m glad I had it done all those years ago, when I had a stomach I was happy to show off.

It’s your daughters body. If she wants it doing, if you stop her, she will get it done anyway and maybe get other piercings done at the same time. As long as she goes to a safe place to get it done and keeps it clean While it heals, I feel it’s best to go along with this kind of thing.

Don't you have to be 18.

Belly button piercing is very different to ears.

I had mine done a week before Madonna. Proud. Gotta tell ya though it hurt A LOT

MoiraRoseForPresident · 14/07/2021 22:27

Just let her have it. Infections are rare, the pain is minimal and chances are, as she get older and has her own dc, she'll take it out while pregnant and won't bother with it again.

Speaking from personal experience!

I've got both sides of my nose done, a Medusa lip piercing and too many to count ear piercings. My belly piercing was the only one I 'grew out of' and I'm only 28!

PeigiSu · 14/07/2021 22:38

Had mine done in my teens and loved it. Took it out in my 20s.

Went on to go to medical school - lots of practicing examining each other and presenting back findings. Everyone always thought I’d had a laparoscopy!

At 15 I doubt many places will do it but at 16 there’s probably an argument for saying it’s her body so long as she pays and you don’t have huge cleanliness concerns.

All these people with their umbilicus in their stomachs!
