Daughter wants belly piercing

My 15yo is going on and on about having a belly button piercing. It's relentless and she just wants it done as friends are having it done. Any advice from experienced mums on the issue? I'm really not keen and it's causing friction I don't want

I've had mine done since I was 17, it was a bit painful but healed absolutely fine and I still wear a bar nearly 20 years later, I do change them though 😂

Maggiesfarm · 14/07/2021 18:39

@Maggiesfarm

That was very fashionable 2+ years ago. I knew plenty of girls/young women who had a belly button piercing. I didn't realise it was such a thing now.

Tell your daughter she has to wait until she is older, by which time she might have gone off the idea and her friends will removed their rings.

I meant 20+ years ago, not 2.
toastantea · 14/07/2021 18:49

I'm surprised at grown adults who have the 'it was fashionable x amount of years ago' attitude. Surely we teach our children to be their own people. Would you also be dismissive of an item of clothing or would you tell your child to wear what they wanted, because fuck following fashion?

elsaesmeralda · 14/07/2021 19:51

I had mine done at 14, hurt a bit but only for a second. Still got it in til this day and I'm 31 now, although I don't go round showing it off anymore lol

enjoyingscience · 14/07/2021 19:54

I’d quite like mine done for my 40th in a couple of years time. Relive my youth and all that 😂

OK. Well it was fashionable X years ago, I was remembering. The belly button ring was often on show. People are free to do what they like.

When the op's daughter is sixteen she will have the freedom to be pierced wherever she chooses.

PomegranateQueen · 14/07/2021 20:01

I had mine done in my teens and let it close up only a few years later because it just seemed a little juvenile once I hit my 20s. Went to a reputable piercer who did a very neat job, however, I'm in my 30s now and I still have an ugly, lumpy scar on my belly button. It was bad before I had DCs but it stretched with each pregnancy. I wish I had never had it done.

JurassicShay · 14/07/2021 20:02

I would let her, I had mine done at 11 as were all my friends. I also had a lip piercing at 13 & my ears done 6 times. I now wear none at the age of 32.

The teen years are where you get to experiment and find who you are. I wouldn't dampen that by fighting over piercings but I would make sure she knew how to care for it properly and watch a few youtube vids with her so she knows what she's in for.

I can’t believe a responsible piercer would do it on an under 16. It’s a major one - they are removing a core of flesh hence the high infection rate.

I had mine done and religiously soaked it in salt water twice a day for weeks and it was fine

The minimum age is 13 so why would you not believe a responsible piercer would do it?
MotionActivatedDog · 14/07/2021 20:05

Had mine done at 13. (20+ years ago) Can’t remember the pain but I know it was painful. Had no issues with it. Had to take it out for my second pregnancy and haven’t had it in since but I’m sure that isn’t a concern for your DD at this stage!

Amandasummers · 14/07/2021 20:06

I had mine done at 13, I still have it in now at 34 (simply because my belly button just looks weird and huge to me without it 🤦🏻‍♀️) but it does give me a sense of childish pride and one upmanship because my mum created about me having it done (so I went to my dad!!!!) 😳

toastantea · 14/07/2021 20:09

Actually she won't.

ElderButtFuckinNaked · 14/07/2021 20:09

I had mine done at 14. My mum came with me to give permission.

ElderButtFuckinNaked · 14/07/2021 20:12

I don't think it's a particularly major piercing, it's not on the face or anything.

I didn't think it hurt much, less than a nose piercing. I took mine out at about 25, the hole isn't that noticeable now.

Just let her know what to expect, I had mine done at 14 (I’m 34 now) so quite a while ago.
It did get infected, developed a big balloon inside my belly button, cleared up with saline solution.
I removed it when I was pregnant at 19, the hole tore slightly during pregnancy, wasn’t painful but did leave a scar, can still see the scarred hole and tear now. Don’t regret it though, liked it at the time.

Oh and it hurt!

RestartGame · 14/07/2021 20:22

It was a reputable piercer who did mine btw, they are still a top piercer in my city today. I needed parental consent and it was all above board.
When i say it hurt, not like a pps experience comparable to childbirth! Just as you would expect kinda pain

Figgyboa · 14/07/2021 20:24

I got mine done when I was 16, still got it 23 years later. Didn't hurt, I got my pierced by a cosmectic doctor so he gave me local anesthetic. Healed fine, changed to a barbell, they had to pierce with a ring, and totally forgot about it. I clean it everyday but other than that it's just like an ear piercing

HavelockVetinari · 14/07/2021 20:25

Make sure she's aware that it goes in and out of fashion - I wanted it done in my teens, but by the time I was 21 I was SO relieved I hadn't. Friends who'd had theirs done let it close over, but a couple were left with awful scars and none of them had the lovely smooth belly buttons that were in vogue a few years later.

Tell her to get a clip on, and wait a year.

MuslinsRLife · 14/07/2021 20:29

Oh god. No!
Had mine done at 15, I’m not 27 and still have it in as PP says it leaves a nasty hole/scar that will never heal. She will have to have it for the rest of her life!

HelloDulling · 14/07/2021 20:33

@ElderButtFuckinNaked

.
That’s 10 years out of date. In Wales, at least, there are age restrictions now.
HelloDulling · 14/07/2021 20:34

It’s very fashionable now, as with all things 90s. In the grand scheme, it’s no big deal, and she can take it out when she gets fed up with it.

Blossomandbee · 14/07/2021 20:34

I had mine done at 18. It didn't really hurt and healed fine, but... it never fully heals over if you don't want it any more. The needle is hollow and takes away some flesh, so although it may heal to the point you can't get a bad through, you will always have a scar and your belly button will never look the same again. I took mine out in my first pregnancy and because the skin was thin there it developed into a deep stretch mark. So my belly button looks very strange now. Just something to be aware of that with or without jewellery, it is a permanent piercing and I do regret mine.
Also, body puffs in the shower get caught around them really easily. High waisted jeans can too. Also if you're a front sleeper it's something to consider especially while it's healing.
If you do go ahead, go to a good piercer (it can be pierced to deep or too shallow) and get a titanium bar.

wishawish91 · 14/07/2021 20:36

I was 15 when I had my belly pierced, didn't hurt me anymore than having my ears done to be honest, was sensible and cleaned it twice a day with salt water and kept the bar they used in for 2 months before swapping to cheaper/prettier ones.

Had mine out for endo surgery when I was 22 and didn't bother putting back in but it was nice when I was younger (and skinny 😂).

I'd let my 15 year old have it, as long as it's on agreement that they will clean it regularly, not play with it or immediately swap it for a cheap one!
