How are my children tall with short-ish parents?

83 replies

Emmie12345 · 04/11/2020 21:18

Ds - 16 and 2 months , 6.2
Dd - 11 and 8 months , 5.4

Me and their dad are both quite short - me 5.6 and Dad 5.8

How can this be ??

No idea but my eldest DS is 6ft 2" and me and my Ex-H are 5ft 3" Grin

Titsywoo · 04/11/2020 21:22

Sometimes it skips a generation? My sister in law is very tall but PIL are a bit shorter than average. Her grandfather was well over 6ft though. I'm 5ft 3 and DH is 5ft 10 but DS is already 5ft 8 at 13 and has followed the 91st centile since birth so is on course to be 6ft 1 at 18. Although none of his grandparents are tall so maybe he'll stop growing early!

ImNotWhoYouThinkIam · 04/11/2020 21:23

I think the same, although my teens are not quite as tall as yours.

DS1 - (16 and 2 months) 5ft10ish. Might have grown again.
DS2 (14 last week) 5ft 5ish. Again might have grown more.

Me - 5ft1
Dad - 5ft 9 or 10 (can't really remember)

Are their Grandparents/other relatives tall? My Mum is 5ft 5 and Dad 5ft 3
But my Grandad was close to 6ft and my Uncle is 6ft 2.

My ex (not dcs dad) was 6ft2 and his Dad was only 5ft Grin

ILovemyCatsSoSoMuch · 04/11/2020 21:26

At 5’6 you aren’t short, you are taller than average.

Do you have any tall parents/ grandparents?

I have one very tall and one very short child. DH and I are the taller side of average, but we both have a mixture of tall and short parents or grandparents,

Emmie12345 · 04/11/2020 21:27

Hmmmmm

No, grandparents aren’t talk either!! The tallest person I can think of is Dh brother Who is 5.10 maybe ..

I did breastfeed them both for absolutely ages (till 3 and 3.5) could it be that ?? They were both also big babies (9.7 and 9.4)

Tall not talk )

TheRuleofStix · 04/11/2020 21:29

No breastfeeding doesn’t make your kids tall - it’s genes. They’ll be a throwback somewhere Grin

Emmie12345 · 04/11/2020 21:30

@TheRuleofStix 😂

Just so weird ! Lol

ImNotWhoYouThinkIam · 04/11/2020 21:31

Hmm, could be the breastfeeding. I fed DS1 for 20months and DS2 for 3 years. Mine were only 7.6 and 8.2 at birth though.
So our sample size of 2 mums and 4 children says breastfeeding makes them tall Grin
definitely not a scientific study

LaurieFairyCake · 04/11/2020 21:31

If you're a woman you're MUCH taller than average - 3 to 4 inches taller

Emmie12345 · 04/11/2020 21:32

@ImNotWhoYouThinkIam hahahahaha yes lol

OP posts:
LaurieFairyCake · 04/11/2020 21:32

OR you fucked the milkman Grin

fairynick · 04/11/2020 21:32

My parents are both 5ft 7 and a size 7 shoe. DSis and I are both 5ft 5 and a size 5 shoe. Genetics blow my mind.

Emmie12345 · 04/11/2020 21:33

@LaurieFairyCake me?

So maybe it’s my side then cos dh is on short side for a man

OP posts:
ImNotWhoYouThinkIam · 04/11/2020 21:33

@LaurieFairyCake I thought average for a woman was 5ft5 or 6?

Emmie12345 · 04/11/2020 21:34

@LaurieFairyCake 😂 I didn’t ))

You are 2-3 inches taller than the average height for a women in the U.K.

My SIL and her parents are tiny (5ft 2 for the women and her dad is 5ft 5) and yet her brother with the same parents is 6ft 3. God knows where he came from!

I’m intrigued to see the height of our kids, as I’m 5ft 9 and DH is 6ft 2, with grandfathers at 6ft 4 and 6ft 6. My MIL is 5ft 8 so it’s only my mum bringing the side down at 5ft 4 Grin

Apileofballyhoo · 04/11/2020 21:36

You're taller than average, so they might have inherited a tall gene from you. Also some people have longer legs and shorter bodies (me) and vice versa, but if you had both long legs and a long body you'd be taller and could inherit them from shorter parents. Genes are mysterious things though. My sister and I are both small breasted and our DM is not, nor were our grandmothers. So I think we must have inherited the female version of our father's chest iyswim, but my Dsis is broad-shouldered and I am fairly slight, more like my DM. I don't know. My DF had a large family and my DGF was pretty tall but my DGM was short. All the girls were short bar one who was bottle fed. All the boys were tall.

Bf dd for 3 years and she is taller than her father.

Neither of us has tall relatives.
I am the tallest in my family at 5ft 4”

Fwiw my uncle and his brother are both 6ft2”

Their parents are both under 5ft

Emmie12345 · 04/11/2020 21:38

@MaverickDanger OMG it’s a mystery!

My dp is 6.4 and my 16 year old son towers over his 18 year old son

How !!!

OP posts:
GrumpyHoonMain · 04/11/2020 21:38

It’s from your side. You are tall for a woman and so is your son. I don’t think you daughter is particularly tall though.

Emmie12345 · 04/11/2020 21:38

My dp is 6.4 , not my ex dh, my children’s dad, that is

OP posts:
Emmie12345 · 04/11/2020 21:39

@GrumpyHoonMain when do girls stop growing tho? I think I grew till about 15..?

DD's boyfriend (17) is 6'3" and both his parents are shorter than average. He absolutely towers over his Dad. Apparently no tall grandparents either! Bizarre. My kids are all tall, but so are DH and I so no surprises there.

ParadeOfRemotes · 04/11/2020 21:41

I'm interested in this as well. DH and I are both quite normal/small (5ft3 and 5ft8 and slim built). Although our kids are still quite young they are bloody enormous with huge feet. They were absolutely massive 11lb babies as well... Confused I'm not sure what to make of it really.
