I think it's fine to have one at 12 really, it's when girls want to look their best and show off their midriffs to the boys etc

You mustn't spoil their fun as they will grow up to hate you after all.

tegan · 26/07/2007 20:08

I have one and I would be happy for my dd's to get one once they are at secondary school

harleyd · 26/07/2007 20:10

surely she wont be able to get it done without your consent anyway? is it not still the case where they wont go below the ears without parental consent until 16? i wouldnt let mine get it done til at least that age

morningpaper · 26/07/2007 20:11

I was 18 but it was incredibly painful and I passed out about 5 times

The skin is really thick - TBH I wouldn't do it on such a young child's skin, I would have thought there would be Implications with it still having growing to do

lou33 · 26/07/2007 20:11

i had this conversation with dd1 yesterday she is 15

i said i wouldnt be happy with it being done now, we agreed at 18 she could have what she liked

bozza · 26/07/2007 20:11

18

harleyd · 26/07/2007 20:12

im sure that made no sense. too much wine. i got mine done at 20 and had bother with it for 4 months til it grew out

Wilkie · 26/07/2007 20:12

Ew - tell her it's exceptionally naff nowadays. I had mine done when I was 18 and have since removed it (26 now) - it has left a bloody great whole and when I was pg it stretched to buggery and itched like mad.

Defo not be allowed to do it until she is 18. You are her mother!!!!!

morningpaper · 26/07/2007 20:13

It's such a big part of your body/skin

I think it's better to wait until 18 because their skin has grown properly then

It takes 1-2 years to heal

lou33 · 26/07/2007 20:13

the british body piercing association says 14-16 yr olds need a parent or guardian with them and tongue or below the neck piercings are at the discretion of hte piercer

at 16 they are regarded as adults

morningpaper · 26/07/2007 20:14

hah yes I could show her the inch-long wrinkled scar which pregnancy has left where my pretty piercing used to be

UCM · 26/07/2007 20:14

Just in case anyone thought I was joking. I was.

harleyd · 26/07/2007 20:18

lou 33 - thats what i was trying to say. a reputable body piercer wouldnt touch anyone under 16 without parental consent.

Pabamella · 26/07/2007 20:20

I had my tongue pierced at 15, me, my mum and aunt all got it done together

By the time i was 18 i had 5 facial piercings - + 3 body.

morningpaper · 26/07/2007 20:25

I had my labia pierced when I was young and firm

Now I can put a guy rope in it to hold it all down when it's windy

UCM · 26/07/2007 20:25

Oh MP, bleughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

What would you do if you were near a magnet

Wilkie · 26/07/2007 20:26

PMSL MorninPaper. Think I just wee-d actually!!

harleyd · 26/07/2007 20:26

lol morning paper

morningpaper · 26/07/2007 20:28

I used to run computer cables for work and had a hand-held metal detector for detecting cables etc

Well you can imagine what fun I had entertaining the boys

AttilaTheMum · 26/07/2007 20:28

DD had hers done at 16 - that one and her nose are the only ones that have never been infected. Personally I am definitely not a fan of piercing, but actually I think it looks very nice - it depends what you put in it - DD usually has a little silver lizard in it.
There are places that will do it for someone who 'looks' 16, obviously not reputable ones - DD's friend had her tongue pierced at 15 at one of them, so getting it done without permission isn't impossible.

LeafTurner · 26/07/2007 20:28

I think they have to be 14 before they can have it done legally ! I know my friend took her dd along at 13.75 and talked them into doing it as she is a nurse and promised to look after it properly ! But she was adamant that they wouldn't have done it if she (the mum) hadn't been so persuasive !

harleyd · 26/07/2007 20:29

its true. i get into bother at the airport all the time

ambercat · 26/07/2007 20:34

I know someone who let their 12 year old dd get it done

harleyd · 26/07/2007 20:37

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 26/07/2007 20:40
