What coat is your teenage DD wearing this term?

I need to buy a winter coat for my DD12, she's just started high school and I don't want to get this too badly wrong, she's already quite shy and geeky. I'd like to try and help her feel a bit fashionable as this is a daunting enough time for her.
What are your teens wearing?
Any advice? Should I also post in S&B?
Thank you in advance.

My dd has a padded puffa parka type thing in khaki with a big furry hood from Topshop. She’s going into year 11.

dementedpixie · 05/09/2018 07:42

Our teens don't really wear coats as not everyone has a locker so there's nowhere to store them. They wear a cardigan or jumper under their blazer instead

TheThirdOfHerName · 05/09/2018 07:42

I wouldn't buy it yet.
No one will be wearing a coat yet anyway.
Wait and see what the other girls are wearing and then buy one in half term.

MyOtherProfile · 05/09/2018 07:43

Coat? Teenager?

Hahaha hahahaha ... sob

CryptoFascist · 05/09/2018 07:44

Probably good advice, i did originally intended to leave it until the half term but the weather here is pretty gloomy/rainy today, so thinking I might have to bring it forward.

Even when it's snowing they seem to forget they even have a jumper in my experience.

Fairylea · 05/09/2018 07:45

Reading the other replies I do have to agree they won’t wear a coat unless it is literally arctic conditions - and even then it’s a case of nagging them into it! Grin

KittyMcKitty · 05/09/2018 07:48

We’re a long way off cold weather! I wouldn’t think about it till half term.

Last year dd had a puffa type thing with fur round tge hood from H&M.

KittyMcKitty · 05/09/2018 07:48

Coat not cold!

CryptoFascist · 05/09/2018 07:48

Oh I know this one of old, since about 10 DD "doesn't get cold", but I'm cruel enough to make her wear it. If I can see my breath, the coat goes on...for now Grin

At school they have to wear the official school coat and nobody wears it.

MrsScrubbingbrush · 05/09/2018 07:50

Last winter my DDs wore a very lightweight puffy coat from Uniqlo which could scrunch up very small.

They were in Yr7 so they didn't know it was totally uncool to wear a coat (and hat, gloves & scarf) I doubt if they'll wear it this year🙄

Isentthesignal · 05/09/2018 07:59

@CryptoFascist, if you force her, she'll wear it until you are out of sight -you will make her feel more geeky! I let my kids decide for themselves - they both have a light weight rain proof jacket I bought from Uniqlo that they carry in their bags until it gets really cold - snowing and then they might wear a coat - they have a long walk to school and have been taught to check the weather everyday and decide what is needed. Take your dd shopping (after a few weeks at school - so she sees what other kids are wearing) and allow her to chose - that way she might wear it. Allowing kids choice usually makes them feel less self-conscious .

CryptoFascist · 05/09/2018 08:07

Thank you all for your advice, I shall as suggested take her shopping in a few weeks so she can pick something similar to the other girls. It'll look lovely decorating the back of her bedroom door Grin

No-one wears a coat at school.
She has a puffa and faux shearling jacket (cheap one) for out of school.,

BackInTime · 07/09/2018 09:07

DM insisted that we had to wear a coat so my DSis used to wear it to keep her happy but then took it off and stashed it in a bush around the corner and picked it up on the way back from school Grin

12yr DD is still in super dry, 16yr DD is wearing a vintage leather biker jacket found at the vintage planet in Camden Market.

Titsywoo · 07/09/2018 09:21

I wouldn't bother. The only time I've seen the kids at DC school wear them is when it is snowing. Their blazers seem to keep them warm enough.

Isentthesignal · 07/09/2018 16:47

Kids around here do wear a coat when it’s cold - Especially the ones who have a long walk home but I still wouldn’t force it, you need to start allowing your dcs to make judgements for themselves at some point.

pepperrainbowpig · 07/09/2018 16:53

Kids round here also wear coats. Bought DD who's almost 15 a black puffa with fur hood from River Island last week. Not cold enough for it yet though. Last year she had a similar one from Topshop.

Sundance2741 · 08/09/2018 07:31

Older dd went to a non uniform school for her first few years of secondary. No one ever wore a coat - huge site, lockers well away from most classrooms. A hoodie was the most they'd wear. Her next school insisted on blazers at all times outside the classrooms and she couldn't fit a coat over it - not that she wanted to. She's at college now and sometimes wears a coat but mainly just hoodies, even in the rain.

Younger dd now year 9 does have a puffa type coat she wore last year - but only in extremis! Her locker is more accessible as she's at a different school from the ones her sister went to but she says it's hard to fit it in the locker and that she's not cold! She does have a thin waterproof that fits easily in her bag and uses that sometimes.

Don't spend too much is my advice especially as she could grow quickly.

chuckiecheese · 08/09/2018 07:42

Dd (year 9) had a uniqlo one last year, however she will not wear it now as a boy told her it was a boys coat Angryit isn't!

Puffa parker is the way forward for us Wink

bumblingbovine49 · 08/09/2018 07:44

DS only has a lightweight rain jacket in his backpack which he occasionally wears over his blazer if it is pouring down. He has a school sweater for under his blazer which is generally enough for him in colder days.

Last yeer I did buy him a lightweight padded coat though (type that can be scrunched up to go in his backpack) around Christmas time as he had no warm coat at all (outgrown them all)..

I had been considering not buying a winter coat as he had not worn one once in the previous (mild) winter. Luckily I figured he should have at least one warmish coat even if the winter was mild again- which it wasn't!!GrinShock

bellinisurge · 08/09/2018 07:48

My Y7 dd has a black pacamac thing in the bottom of her bag in case it gets intolerable and overrides the need NOT to have a coat on. Still unused. It gets a bit parky here in the winter. We'll see.

Flaminghotcocoa · 08/09/2018 08:01

Nearly all the girls at dd’s school wear coats but they don’t have a blazer. Having said that my ds (who does have a blazer) wore a coat in winter the last two years and so did his friends so not ALL teens are too stupid to wear coats!

Not that I can be any help in what cost to choose, dd hasn’t got one yet.
