My Beloved Hamster Died

Just wanted to thank this board as I got many tips over the years. I adopted my boy Syrian hamster (8 weeks old from an accidental litter) and lost him last month aged 2 and a half. He was trained to recall to me, never nipped anyone, loved a cuddle and was the best wee chap I ever met. His care from me was the best possible after getting tips here on enclosure, free running etc. Thank you guys he gave me the best 2 and a bit years ever. I had a funeral and he was cremated and his urn (complete with golden engraved plate with his name on) is back home with me.

I'm really sorry to hear about your loss, he was gorgeous and lucky to have a human that realised his potential.

Thank you he was a first pet for my daughter and I sort of fell in love 😳. He was truly such a clever little creature! He did tricks for Twitter 🤣 recalling and jumping into my hand when told. Proper little genius. I’m bloody heartbroken tbh

Awwww. I'm sorry. They do steal little bits of your heart, don't they?

I'm sure he had the best life.

I'm so sorry. He looks adorable.

Geamhradh · 13/07/2021 20:35

Awww, bless you. He looks so cute. Flowers

Menofsteel · 13/07/2021 20:37

He was fantastic (and liked the tv after a good run) this board was invaluable and he had proper space and plenty of interaction as I got so many good tips. Proper blubbering at his funeral!

Sometimes it goes like that with animals, you meet your soul mate and they have your heart.

It is a love story as important as any.

So sorry op Thanks

Bigsighall · 13/07/2021 21:20

So sorry. I had a pet death today too so I get how horrible it is :(

Menofsteel · 13/07/2021 21:41

Thank you both I half thought everyone would think I was mad! I miss him. The room is empty without him and I still find myself tiptoeing in the kitchen 🤣 (he was a grubber who would hopefully follow me to the kitchen) but I am devastated. We all get that “one of a kind” pet and he was mine. He died peacefully in his sleep in his wee house. I did take him out and checked for hibernation but I knew it was hopeless as he was closer to 3 years old and it was 30 degrees in the house.

Thank you, I’m ok. It doesn’t matter how big or small they are, it’s still heartbreaking isn’t it!

Menofsteel · 13/07/2021 21:50

@Bigsighall yes it breaks your heart no matter how small. We’ll ignore the other comment….hope you’re ok ❤️

A pet death is always sad, it doesn’t matter how big or small they are. We’ve had two hamsters, I’m not particularly a hamster person but it was still sad when they died. They’re a part of your family for the brief time they’re with you. Ignore the previous poster, it’s not just as simple as buying a new one. All pets have different personalities and you can’t just replace them.

PieceOfString · 13/07/2021 21:51

Awwww, what a lovely companion story you created together. What a lucky hamster and human. Reminds me of my much loved one as a child called Smokey, he was grey of course, who was tame and had a good life. Never got him to learn tricks though! I'm curious how you got his tame-ness to such a good level.
It hurts but you'd do it all again if you could wouldn't you. Fab memories, the best pets become family legend and then tales are told about them for years. 😁

Can absolutely relate to this post, as today we had to put down our little Syrian hamster at the vet because she had a tumour :( I hope you're doing okay.
ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 13/07/2021 21:53

@ColintheCrow

It's a fucking hamster. Buy a new one.
It’s the small pets section, why are you even here if that’s your nasty contribution?, feel better about yourself now do you? Kicking someone when they’re down? God you must have a really unhappy life to be so spiteful.

Grow up
Menofsteel · 13/07/2021 21:55

@Dumpling89 I’m sorry 😞. As for training? Fresh carrots 🤣. I held some and made the same sound over and over, when he came to me, he got carrots! He associated the noise with his favourite snack or being picked up and stroked. Eventually he automatically responded to the sound.

So so sorry, hamsters are absolutely gorgeous pets, I adore them. Well done for giving him such a lovely happy life, you’ll always have such lovely memories of him ❤️

FelicityBeedle · 13/07/2021 21:57

We drove a total of 6 hours for our lost event hamster, they’re heart stealers. I’m sorry for your loss x

Fluffyandsilly · 13/07/2021 21:57

Awww the poor little critter. He looked very cute.
I’m sorry he’s gone @Menofsteel Pets really are part of the family.

Ignore the one twatty poster. People who are not animal lovers would not understand.
