My Beloved Hamster Died

Just wanted to thank this board as I got many tips over the years. I adopted my boy Syrian hamster (8 weeks old from an accidental litter) and lost him last month aged 2 and a half. He was trained to recall to me, never nipped anyone, loved a cuddle and was the best wee chap I ever met. His care from me was the best possible after getting tips here on enclosure, free running etc. Thank you guys he gave me the best 2 and a bit years ever. I had a funeral and he was cremated and his urn (complete with golden engraved plate with his name on) is back home with me.

Oh he’s lovely Op, I’m sorry he’s gone. I had a Syrian called Ramone and at the end he was very weak so I squeezed plum juice into my finger for him to lick, and wrapped him in a soft cover on top of a heated blanket. Loving and caring for all animals is one of the best things in life x

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 13/07/2021 21:58

Your hamster was lovely OP, sounds like he had a lovely life with you, they break your heart, no matter how small, sorry for your loss Flowers

Menofsteel · 13/07/2021 21:59

Ramone is a great name! Thank you all for sorting the troll, that was uncalled for on a thread where people are sharing lost pet stories. You are all fantastic.

Sounds like he was an adorable hamster, and also a really lucky hamster who got the lovliest possible home.

firefly123 · 13/07/2021 22:03

I am so sorry for your loss. My daughter has a lovely Syrian hamster 🐹 and know we would be devastated to lose him.

@firefly123 they are so intelligent! I honestly expected a chore and ended up with something I loved dearly. They are brilliant.

Ah I'm so sorry OP. When my DS's hamster Reg died I was also heartbroken, he was lovely, not as intelligent as yours though! Yours sounds like a delight. Mine just used to like sitting on me and cuddling in.

tapdancingmum · 13/07/2021 22:10

Sorry for your loss. They do wiggle their way into your heart don't they? I'm just watching Archie trying to climb the radiator whilst my DD has Leo in the conservatory for a run. Poppy is upstairs but as a dwarf just gets to run around our bed though is off to the vet as she has a lump. We are on about number 23 hamster and at one point had 7 in the house due to rescuing them. Some we have had for nearly two years and some only a matter of weeks due to being rescues. One of our favourites was found dumped in a car park and we couldn't not have him. We have buried them all in their own space in the garden and they have a plaque on the fence.

With 2 guinea pigs in the house we have all the cuddles we could ask for.

Couldn't live without them now.

Menofsteel · 13/07/2021 22:19

@tapdancingmum your house sounds epic 😍

Love is love. I’m sorry you are now without your wee chap.

This post really touched me.

I'm really sorry to hear about your loss, he was gorgeous and lucky to have a human that realised his potential.

Cactuslockdown · 13/07/2021 22:34

So sorry OP, he was beautiful. We lost DDs little hamster last year, I was so sad… he was such a wonderful character. I completely understand Flowers

Nat6999 · 17/07/2021 02:17

I'm sorry we have had several Syrians, each with their own character & all very much loved. We have a row of graves in a sunny corner of my mum's garden. The only advice is to get another one as soon as you are ready.

Nightlystroll · 17/07/2021 03:00

I've had three syrians, all very different little personalities. I bawled when each if them died. Each was cremated and, I know its dreadful to say, they sit on my mantlepiece where I have a little chat with them when I'm dusting. They just gorgeous little characters.

JulesM73 · 17/07/2021 03:06

My DS had a hamster, who for some reason preferred me so each day he would listen out for me, come to me and loved being held. He reached 3 and one morning he looked like he was struggling to breathe so I took him out of the cage and he died a few minutes later in my hands. I was so upset, and even now thinking about that makes me sad but I think at least I was there at the end.
They may ‘only be a hamster’ but that doesn’t mean you don’t care or are not affected when they die.

PinniGig · 17/07/2021 03:20

@Menofsteel Naww... we've always had hamsters (did have until getting the youngest dog who sadly isn't safe) and it never ceases to amaze me how smart they are.

Our last Syrian "Frisbee" was a cheeky sod and when he died we buried him inside a shaded corner of the paddock under a tree.

Menofsteel · 17/07/2021 05:52

So happy/sad equally to hear about all the loved hamsters on this thread ❤️
