Hamster is gay, how to explain to children?

sophiechitt · 26/10/2020 00:40

Our hamsters are both men, and our kids are asking why they cuddle so much, how do explain this to children 😂😂

OP posts:

We've got a 1 Yr old syrian and not long had another who lives in a separate cage. My dp went to get the older one out his cage after holding the other one and he went crazy at him. We've never seen him react like that and that was just the smell of the other hamster so can imagine what he would do if they were together in the same cage. Nasty little things if they want to be.

RigaBalsam · 26/10/2020 05:55

Gerbils can live together but not hamsters. Even one of our Russian ones killed the other one.

Mallowmarshmallow · 26/10/2020 05:57

I was going to say 'because love is love' is really the only thing required here but from PPs it looks like you've got a more immediate problem on your hands than a reluctance to explain homosexuality to your children...

lurker69 · 26/10/2020 06:06

hmm my dwarf hamsters were quite nice to each other until one attacked the other one and we had to rush out and buy a new cage at 6pm, don't believe pet shops when they say they like to live together because a lot of the time when they get older they do not! i had only has Syrian hamsters until i got the dwarfs, so took pets at homes word for it they should be ok but occasionally they will turn on each other and need to be separated, i have since learnt that this is not the case and most do not live is perfect harmony at all, it was just lucky i was home and got to them quickly because god knows what would of happened to the more passive one Haloween Sad

FenellaVelour · 26/10/2020 06:16

Should’ve chosen a different species, OP. As others have said, Syrian hamsters can never live together as they’d fight to the death, and even dwarf hamster species won’t generally be “friends” and will often erupt into violence.

iloveeverykindofcat · 26/10/2020 06:25

We had this our 'female' guinea pigs. Then we quickly had to change Lady's name to Laddy when the first babies made their appearance.

Laddy went to grow enormous, live to etxreme old age, and successfully father a small nation of guinea pigs. He was known as King Agouti due to the single crown on his head.

These stories are horrific!

What do hamsters bring to the table if they’re so vicious?! They can’t even share w cage?!

SunshineCake · 26/10/2020 06:45

They aren't cuddling Hmm.

You just get one. They’re perfectly nice pets for people. They just don’t tolerate other hamsters.
iguanadonna · 26/10/2020 06:54

@FenellaVelour to be fair, they may well desire to eat humans too. But being sensible of the size difference, they lay off

ManiacalMumsnet · 26/10/2020 07:18

Thanks for the reports. We don't have too many concerns about this - there are some useful replies on the thread so we'll leave it for now.

zaffa · 26/10/2020 07:28

I adopted a male hamster as a child. Imagine my surprise when she had about a million babies a week or so later.... how sure are you that they are both male?

Cookerhood · 26/10/2020 07:34

We had two Russian brothers who lived together perfectly happily for 18 months & suddenly started fighting so we had to separate them. They aren't great pets, tbh. Rats on the other hand...

KaptainKaveman · 26/10/2020 07:35

A lot of Russian hamsters are communists though, so watch what you say.....

MellowMelly · 26/10/2020 07:44

They need to be separated! The pet shop told me they would be fine together but I soon became aware of the ‘cuddling’ turning into some vicious fighting. They were much happier in their own rotastaks.

TheArchFear · 26/10/2020 07:47

Sexing hamsters, gerbils and so on is not that difficult.

Ask Richard Gere.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 26/10/2020 07:51

My Russian hamster came from a rescue, he'd been in a cage with another and been badly hurt.
I thought all hamsters had to live separately.

Eckhart · 26/10/2020 07:51

My brother's hamsters had a fight one night, and when we got up one morning, one hamster had killed the other, opened it up, and shat all over its insides.

Unless you want your child to witness something similar, separate the hamsters.

Also, a good way to explain a gay relationship to a child is to say 'They love each other.'

Callcat · 26/10/2020 07:56

I used to have a pair of lesbian ducks. They did not kill each other but they were not male hamsters. That is all I have.

Eckhart · 26/10/2020 08:06

@Callcat

There's a pair of lesbian ducks on the canal near my grandad's house. They seem very happy together, and have been a couple for a few years, now. They were also not male hamsters, but it's a pleasant tangent.

I had one as a child who had a pretty good go at it 😂

Other people's threshold for reporting threads must be pretty low. What for, I wonder? Hammyphobia?

I’d guess suspecting it to be a troll thread, which you’re asked to report and not publicly troll-hunt, rather than being in any way offended.

Kudos on "Hammyphobia" Smile

I didn't think it was a troll thread, but the OP does seem to have a bit of an old fashioned and childish attitude to gay relationships: How do we explain two hamsters who are "men" cuddling ?
