GP babies have finally arrived!!

I posted on another thread a couple of weeks ago that GP2 was pregnant much to our surprise! Vet said birth was imminent and she has finally, 2 weeks later, given birth to three babies!! And I wasn't even home for it to happen, on my way home now, DH says she is cleaning then up now!

Squeeee! So excited to get home and see them. Will post pics later when I can

Let Mum-pig make herself presentable first. She'll want a sleep, a wash and a snack and to make her little ones look presentable too. Then the photos can be taken.

She's cleaned herself up, had a snack and a drink, and fed them a couple of times. They are finding their feet and squashing each other in the process and are sooo lovely!

I think I've uploaded 2 photos but not sure if they've worked so please let me know if you can't see them.

Vet says not to handle them for 10days but will hopefully get some better ones then. They seem very happy and settled tho.

They are tortoiseshell black, white and ginger.

I'll have a look at the photos tomorrow, see if I can sort out why they aren't showing.

Mummy GP keeps squeaking at them if they go outside the nesting box when she does, and rounds them back up, is so funny to watch!

Ooh Milly did she eat the placentas (ours did, weird to see a completely vegetarian animal scoffing blood , but at least they don't eat their babies )

They are very strict, caring nurturing mums (especially with 3 - they need to work out a system of sharing )
She'll demand extra food and water ( you can get Alfalfa hay for nursing mums and baby pigs ) she'll be a busy girl.

Congratulations baby GP are so cute it amazing how soon they start eating solids and never stop!

She did eat the placentas, it was strange to see.

They are all over the cage his morning and she seems happy with that but still keeping them in check. I think as two feed, she cleans the other.

She is drinking lots, not eating tonnes but have just put some kale in which with parsley is her fave and she's tucking in nicely.

Got a couple of nice pics of little ones this morning, must go to work now but will upload this evening and hopefully get it right this time!

Ok I think I've managed to upload the photos properly this time. the are so sweet, don't want to have to wait another week to hold them. Mummy GP is doing well, and the little ones are very active and into exploring!

Why did the vet say you needed to wait though to cuddle them?
We cuddled our pigs from the start with the Mum Pig close by (she only got fretful if her Himalayan piglet wheeked ) We kept the Himalayan, she was the only female,as a companion . She was our longest living piggie, IIRC about 7yo.

If the MumPig trusts you and you don't take her precious piglets out of her comfort zone then she'll be ok. You need to shift them to change their bedding too.

And you'll need to have a peek to see if you have girls or boys (it would be easier all round if they were girls) then you need to decide what will happen with these babies.

The vet said that if we handled them too soon then the mother might eat them if they smelt of us and said to wait the ten days. The vet has offered to see if they are boys or girls when they are two weeks old.

DH lifted mum and babies out in the nesting box last night and cleaned out the cage and they seemed perfectly happy.

Several options as to what we'll do with them. DS has declared a sudden interest(he's 12 and it moved him from minecraft) and says he'd like us to keep them if they are boys. DD would keep them all anyway, but I teach and have tentatively put the idea to my head of a couple being class pets, and I'd bring them home in hols etc, which has been agreed if I want to so need to have a think. Have a feeling we'll get attached very quickly!!

I wouldn't go that far. Guinea poo bearable agreed. Unlike nappies, no never. They make me want to run to the hills. I've already told my DC when in years to come they make my a Granny, nappy changing is never going to happen ever.

My DD was delighted when GP3 did his tiny piglet poohs in a pile, she knew for sure he was eating (and he's quite a tidy boy. Not litter trained, but tidy )
(And YY out of all animal deposits, GPs are the most tolerable.

No ones poo is ever cute. Especially the cats who managed to miss the litter tray overnight!

However speaking of poo, mum GP had a brown bum this morning. Now she is currently feeding the babies in one of her poo corners, so I guess it could just be staining but should I be worrying about fly strike??

Has she got loose pooh or is it just grubby (possibly after the birth from dried blood?)

Flystrike is commoner in rabbits but GPs are at risk,

She needs plenty of water and let her have a selection of foods but watch her intake of salad-ey things (lettuce, dandelions etc)

(And it's good that she has a pooh corner - hopefully keeping the rest of the area clean, but you might find yourself cleaning that bit more often , daily, twice daily. There are three more bums in there after all )

BTW cat pooh is rank , that's the advantage of GPs. Chopped up , processed, dry vegetable by-product.

Haven't noticed any loose poo and her bum was clean until this morning. Given cage a good clean even tho was only done two days ago, but called in at vets earlier as I was passing and they said to bring her and babies in for a check up to be on safe side.

Waiting to be seen now, but They seem unfazed by their car journey at least!

Her diet is kale, spinach, parsley, full, grated carrot and red pepper with bits of apple, strawberry tops etc thrown in when we have them. Plus nuggets of course and hay. Will hold off on any salad-y stuff tho.

How did MumPig get on at the vets milly?

Sorry, mad evening, not had chance to update.

Vet thinks it could be urine that was staining her fur and wants me to keep an eye on how often she wees, which is v hard as she's still feeding the babies loads despite them thoroughly enjoying the veg I'm giving. She thought it could be a urine infection but wasn't completely convinced so have just to keep an eye really.

Said too early to see if boars or sows as although we took babies and mum up together she didn't want to handle them as they were so young.

When will mummy pig wean them off her milk? She seems to be feeding them loads despite the fresh stuff they are eating too(they discovered parsley today )

Your piggie probably doesn't get a minute to herself at the moment (baby piglets tend to 'dive' under their Mums belly for comfort too, so she'll be larding about , they'll hear a noise and whoosh back to stick their heads under her belly. When the pigs get bigger, Mum looks like she's on stilts )
When we got GP3 as a piglet (6weeks) he kept diving under GP1 belly. GP1 was a bit but very tolerant.

They normally wean them themselves and your Piglets will start sampling solid food more.

Any boars need to be weaned by 3-4 weeks (so you've still got plenty of time) before they start eyeing up their Mum/Sisters
