OK, no I'm not in the wrong place

are there any unwritten rules I should be aware of when we're choosing names for our piggies? I mean, we don't want to be the laughing stock of the entire GP owning population ya know!

what are yours all called? did you wait till you had them and then pick names (the DC are discussing names already and we aren't getting them till next week)

I wont be back straight away, we are all off to build a hutch now !

Ours are Ed and Samson. The rescue centre called them Sparkles and Pixie (they're both boys) which they really, really didn't suit.

DD has chosen "Chester" before she set eyes on her piggie (but she did have Archie/Alfie/Harry as backup)

DS chose "Ninja" for his pig (who actually became mine but I couldn't change the name) I liked Bart for him

(We don't know their original names)

When we got GP3 the protocol was : GP1 chose the guinea, I chose the name, he belongs to DD

I chose (in order) Boris/Tarragon/Sage

DD announce when we saw them "He's Dylan"

DS (9) wanted to call one of them Squeakums - but his sisters vetoed that, and we have convinced him that would ne a nickname, not their real name. We are hedging towards names like Poppy, Muffin, Pepper, and Toffee at the moment (our cats of yesteryear were called Bubble & Squeak)

You need names that you won't be embarassed shouting down the garden

but if you're lucky they might stop filling their faces and look at you.

The only time the guinea pigs acknowledge me are when they want food. which, tbf, is most of the time.

My guinea boys have never asked me for another pair of Converse shoes even though they have twice as many feet as DD

If I had a GP I would call it Gulliver, or...GP.

Mine have proper person names as does the rabbit.

Do they come when you call their name? Only if they are very, very exceptional like my beloved Todd aka Old Boy (RIP)

Otherwise they look up because they hear their name, which they associate with food after lots of gentle encouragement training. Even then they will only come to you if you are holding tempting food bunch of parsley/grass

As for names, anything goes. Ours have often had middle names, has been a bit at the vets.

The names we have had

Smartie Buttons named by DD2 after both guineas at her nursery school.

Todd Luke named by DD1. Only DD1 ever used his middle name.

Rosie Toffee. Named by DD2. Always known as Fatimus on MN. She was a big Girl

Shai aka Naughty Girl after the tumble dryer incident. I think DD1 looked for the most pretentious name possible. It's Hebrew and means 'Gift'. I would have called her Carmen or Blackberry.

Coco Buttons. She came from a rescue. DD1 re-named her. She was originally Buttons which suited her so we kept it as a middle name. But we call her Coco Bean.

Millicent. The only pig I've named. I found the responsibility worse than naming the kids . So I turned to MN for help . She came from rescue too, but I didn't want to know her original name. However she is always called Millie Pig.

I daren't ask, but what is the tumble dryer incident?

IIRC it involved chewing a cable.( it must've been very naughty to merit the name)
There was another pig (one of BonkeyMollocks boys) that got behind a tumbledryer and had to be extracted.

Todd liked an open door policy on his hutch. He hated being shut in until bedtime. First thing in the morning I had to let him out to stop him gnawing the bars. Although he loved his hutch for naps and sleep at night time.

Fatimus and Shai were having free time in the kitchen, Todd was on the loose elsewhere. Shai got behind the swing bin; found the gap behind the tumble dryer and had a munch through the cable.

DH had to cut away damaged cable and re-attach the plug. We now have a very short cable from dryer to socket.

You see Todd was too old to neuter when we got him girlfriends so their relationship was more chaste than he would have liked didn't stop him trying though

It seems weird to read of "Todd" he was "Old Boy" or "OB" to me

Ours are Bella & Luna after Harry Potter characters - has they been boys they would have been Harry & Ron.

We've decided if we ever get another pair they will be Womble & Fraggle.

Ooh Womble and Fraggle! I think someone's showing their age there (as am I )

Womble & Fraggle would have suited our girls but I thought of them about 10 days too late.

I suspect DD may have vetoed them anyway as she'd had her heart set on Bella for months.

I'd love a Flumps trio (Posy, Perkin and Pootle) or how about Mary, Mungo and Midge? (am showing my age now too!)

Our current boars are Furno (named after the Lego Hero character) and Bippity (named after a rather more recent kids TV series, the robot out of Driver Dan's Story Train)

Girlies are Holly and Clover - named by me . Both these names were favourites of mine for a DD (I have three boys) and I love the names so felt it was a shame to never use them!

I had various pairs of guineas during my childhood who had fairly typical 'small rodent' type names (Bubble & Squeak, Huffy & Scuffles for e.g.). I did go through a major tennis fan phase though and named two girl pigs accordingly (Ginny - after Virginia Wade - and Chrissie - after Chris Evert ). Always wanted a Boris too (after Becker) or maybe a Stefan (Edberg) but sadly never got either...

Awwww, I loved the Flumps. The three P's would be great - now I wasn't five more piggies! Can't see us convincing DH somehow, it took 9 years to talk him to the two we have.

(tbf, Holly was the 'proper' favoured name of the two for a DD, as in liked by both DH and I. Clover was a bit wishful thinking on my part, I mentioned it hopefully during each pg to be snorted at by DH saying 'we're having a baby, not a cow!' . DC solved the argument by all being boys)

'Tis an excellent GP name though.

Thinking about it, children's character's names were so much better in the seventies & eighties.

I'm trying to think of some from DD's preschool years & really struggling.

I suppose we could have Milo, Jake & Fizz to go with Bella.

Primrose, Fifi & ....can't remember any of the other Flowertots.

Edie, Susie, Archie, Spencer, Josie (Balamory).

Actually back to our childhoods - how about a whole team of GPs...Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble & Grub?

Bam Bam & Pebbles, Barney & Betty, Fred & Wilma.

Much more fun naming guinea pigs than children!
