To be worried about a friend’s drug use

I have a friend who has always dabbled in weed. It caused issues in her last marriage - i have no idea how much she smoked then, just that her ex hated it. She had a messy divorce and lived with her parents for a bit. Then met her current partner. He’s heavily into weed and since meeting him several years ago her weed smoking has gone up (He spends about £800 a week on it - is that normal? No idea)

Now it’s none my business what she does as long as she’s happy, but, I am concerned. Every time I speak to her on video call she is smoking a joint. She has lost a significant amount of weight and is skeletal, complaining about being nauseous all the time. Ive urged her to get bloods done etc and all have come back from the docs ok. Her personality seems different, she is quite paranoid and worries a lot.

Other friends have backed away saying she’s smoking too much weed and has changed.

I'm worried her weed use and suspect it might be a lot heavier than she lets on.

She has hinted at having a dependence on weed, and mostly spends time with people who smoke weed heavily. i wanted to ask if anyone has any knowledge of this. Is it normal to lose weight on weed and to be nauseous?
Are these signs of addiction? Can you get addicted to weed?

TIA

No, no children thankfully.

I don’t really know what to do. She denies excessive use and plays it down.

Over a year ago. We are not that close at the moment for this reason but we have been in the past.

I can’t comprehend anyone spending £800 a week on weed that is a hell of a lot of weed no wonder you are concerned.

I have found weed smokers to be incredibly in denial and selfish about their habit so I doubt you will get through to her.

I would step away from the friendship, not fall out, just step back, she can approach you if she needs you.

Well obviously spending 800 quid a week is in no way normal. It's ridiculously high usage.

She’s spending £3200 a month on drugs? She’s definitely an addict and this will only end one way.

I would also be prepared to bet that she’s not just smoking weed.

This is what I’ve found sadly. I have no idea about drugs but last time we met up in person she looked so haggard, with extremely bloodshot eyes - if I bring it up she changes the subject

This sounds very odd. That's quite a few ounces of weed to be smoking a week. I'm not even sure it's possible to smoke that much. Even a heavy tobacco smoker would struggle to smoke several ounces a week.

Plus, weed makes you hungry. So again, it would be very odd to have lost her appetite to that extent.

Are you sure there aren't other drugs involved?

I'm not sure one person (or even two!) could physically smoke £800 worth of weed in a week OP, there aren't enough hours in the day! I would be wondering about cocaine tbh, especially with your friend's weight loss. The heaviest smokers I know still only use maybe an ounce a week which would be around £150-200 (depending on quality and location) so £800 just on weed seems highly unlikely to me.

She is active in the community and has many friends around her physically. Plus she works so she isn’t withdrawn socially or anything
