harem pants...am I mad?

I have a yen for some proper harem pants in nice soft jersey.

Have I gone bonkers? (I'm a non-flabby tall size 16)

If not, where might I find some nice ones? Topshop website has given me some food for thought already...

I think they can look great with the right top and shoes.

I've got chunky thighs and find them quite flattering and comfy. I got some silky type cropped ones from new look and wear them with heeled gladiator sandals.

MaudofallHopefulness · 30/06/2010 15:16

Go for it I say - but I love to experiment with fashion. If you are tall and your bum isn't flabby why not?

TrillianAstra · 30/06/2010 15:18

Yes you are mad.

GetOrfMoiLand · 30/06/2010 15:21

BOOM

It's Hammer Time

(yes you are mad, stop reading Grazia)

noddyholder · 30/06/2010 15:23

I love them have 2 pairs and wear them a lot.

Gok Wan said last night that apparently they are only good for skinny girls or girls who are top heavy as they balance out your top half.

GetOrfMoiLand · 30/06/2010 15:28

To be honest the whole baggy pant thing with a cuff at the ankle is very flattering - I have a jumpsuit (don't laugh) which has haremy pant legs.

It's the bloody neppy look where your crotch ends up about a centimetre above the knee which needs to be avoided.

And anything which is print, I think.

Magalyxyz · 30/06/2010 15:40

Ludicrous. I saw a tall, slim, blonde girl wearing them recently and she just looked like a fashion victim. I don't think I 've seen anybody else in real life wearing them. This girl usually dresses nicely. But ack! to harem pants.

inchhighprivateeye · 30/06/2010 15:42

There is no such thing as nice harem pants. The only people they suit are people with the surname Hammer and initials MC. People who claim they look nice in them are only justifying the money they spent, or maybe like looking like a toddler in a double dump nappy.

muggglewump · 30/06/2010 15:44

No, no you are not, if you are going to a fancy dress party as either MC Hammer, or someone who has shit themselves.

Hope that helps

jabberwocky · 30/06/2010 15:45

I don't have a pair but admit to considering it after reading about them here

aquavit · 30/06/2010 15:58

ah, I thought this might be the place to come to my senses

I LOATHE Grazia

they can look really nice depending on your shape and size, but they must not be drop-crotch or super baggy MC Hammer style

MadreInglese · 30/06/2010 16:01

(so cropped tracky bottoms in effect really)

beachfeet · 30/06/2010 16:04

I think go for it and try on different styles ! I agree with low crotch can look awful, I personally prefer the softer taylored version, fitted around the botton, pleated at the front, with side pockets but I'm 40 and have to choose very carefully. Last time I wore mine I got loads of compliments!

FabMum1 · 30/06/2010 16:06

I have just bought a pair but don't know what to wear on top. Any suggestions ?

aquavit · 30/06/2010 16:36

FabMum I was inspired on holiday by lots of French women wearing them and they all opted for fitted vests or jersey tops

think that you definitely need to wear something slim on top (and be lean enough around the middle to get away with that)

what I really want is a pair with a nice deep snug-fitting waistband

OP posts:
inchhighprivateeye · 30/06/2010 16:36

A paper bag over your head so no one will know it's you as they wonder if you've pished yerself

noddyholder · 30/06/2010 16:38

I have a fullish white pair very summery and I wear those with a black fitted sleevelss top and ballet pumps The other pair are olive green more fitted and I have a knee length grey silk tunic with 3/4 sleeves with those it is my 'wedding' outfit this year.I see lots of people looking great in them so if they suit you go for it.

FabMum1 · 30/06/2010 16:38

I got mine in H&M n they have quite a thick waistband.
Will try mine on with some vest tops

dexter73 · 30/06/2010 17:31

My dd has these and they look really nice on her but they don't have a low crotch.

FolornHope · 30/06/2010 18:54

thsoe look nice dexy

janeite · 30/06/2010 18:59

Yes - you are mad.

The only people that I've seen them looking nice on are very petite teenagers: you know those ones who look like little birds with diddy feet and no bum or norks but with a waist, worn with a fitted vest and flat sandals.

pinktortoise · 30/06/2010 19:03

I have a cropped dark grey pair and DH laughed when I bought them home.
However they look good on (they do not have the baggy crotch bit) worn with fitted vest and flat sandals. Also are the comfiest thing ever. DH now actually likes them.
