Perfect maxi dress, but will I wear it??

I have a dilemma of sorts. I was arsign around in town this morning, enjoying shopping while ds had a kip in his buggy which is a very rare event. I took this dress into the changing room and it looks amazing. I am mid twenties, 5 foot 7 and a newly slimmed down size 10, very tanned and dark brown hair. I even took a picture on my phone so I could go and mull it over.
Now, I have a picnic on the beach thingy tonight with some uni friends, which I think, if I go back and buy it, I would wear it to. But apart from that, will it languish at the back of my wardrobe? I am more of a Fat Face (ie boring and safe) dresser, and tbh I can't decide if this is a bit WAG for everyday. It's too much for just wondering round town in isn't it? So, would you buy it?? I have an hour to decide before doign the school run and could swing by and pick it up afterwards.

I think it's really nice, not too much for everyday and a great price too.

I would buy it!

trilliAnasTra · 25/06/2010 14:19

That is beautiful. Strapless though. I've been thinking baout maxi dresses for swanning around in - IMO you cna't help but swan if wearing a long dress . But strapless seems a bit more difficult to wear.

Sorry, not helpful. I don't know. It is lovely. And not expensive.

BunnyLebowski · 25/06/2010 14:19

That dress caused a big thread on here a few weeks back - everyone wanted to know where it was from after seeing it on KK.

It's gorgeous. Buy it and wear it! You can dress it down with a denim jacket over the top and flats.

SandyBits · 25/06/2010 14:21

Oh shit. KK has been wearing it. That adds to my dilemma
I've got the strapless thing sorted, I have d cups, but a fabuloous and cheap bra from the debenhams sale that doesn't budge. 30 quid's not much is it?

luciemule · 25/06/2010 14:21

I love it and it's very similar to one I'm hoping comes up in the John Lewis sale next week.

Defo dressed down with flip flops and messy hair for beach party and dressed up for other stuff.
Not sure what it'd look like on the school run but looks lovely.
Always better to look slightly over dressed than under imo.

PuppyMonkey · 25/06/2010 14:23

Oh dear, I'm not going to be much help as I think that looks like a pair of curtains. I don't like maxis personally though, evemn on tall, slim people. It's going to date quickly too. Just my opinion though!

trilliAnasTra · 25/06/2010 14:24

I want to buy it now. Not sure how it would go down at work.

SandyBits · 25/06/2010 14:25

Puppy, the sensible side of me thinks it will date. But at £30, I may take my chances. Hadn't thought of a denim jacket, that would definatly dress it down, but it's soooo hot. I don't want to be layering up in this weather. Hmm. I may buy it. If I wear it tonight, it's a keeper. If not, I'll give it a week. If I can't work up the balls to wear it in that time I'll take it back. Perfect solution

Sorry, I think all those slebs look awful too in that DM link. I'll get me coat.

SandyBits · 25/06/2010 14:26

Have you tried it on Trillian? Tbh, it looked nothing on the hanger, and the fabric is one I'd normally avoid like the plague. But I liekd the colours and am branching out now I've lost weight. It's so flattering, hangs really well, and even though it's strapless, there's no way it's goign to fall down. Very secure.

OP posts:
NorkilyChallenged · 25/06/2010 14:29

It's lovely. And summer wear doesn't date in the same way as normal stuff (you wear it so little in a typical UK year!).

It's a really really good price too. Get it. As others have said, you could wear a denim jacket or little short-sleeved cardi over to dress it down. Or I used to have a see-through, really fine shirt (from Great Plains I think but years ago) which I would wear over a dress like this to dress down.

I can't do strapless yet which is a shame as so many lovely strapless maxis out there (dd2 still going through phase of sticking her arm down my front all the time, could lead to definite wardrobe malfunction)

Good plan. It's boiling here at the mo so if you can't bring yoruself to wear it this week then you probably never will.

trilliAnasTra · 25/06/2010 14:33

I am largely going on your recommendation and the pictures - have never heard of that shop before and definitely don't have one anywhere near. The way they hang is key with maxi dresses I think.

SandyBits · 25/06/2010 14:35

Trillian, they stock it in New Look. That's where I tried it on. Not on the newlook website as far as I could see. And it's actually a whole pound cheaper in store

'I am mid twenties, 5 foot 7 and a newly slimmed down size 10, very tanned and dark brown hair' on top of that you have found a dress that looks amazing!

Right now listen up..You go for it!! Do it for me. I am 20 yrs older and a larger size now as I seem to be putting weight on atm and struggling to find a dress that I even like let alone one that'll cope with all that.

You'll look fab and it's a pretty good price, but wear it don't let it stay in your wardrobe.

LimaCharlie · 25/06/2010 14:38

Buy it, buy it, buy it - its lovely.

I worried about feeling over dressed in a maxi but have seen so many on the school run this week - and like everyone else has said you can dress it down - although why you should want to I don't know

SandyBits · 25/06/2010 14:38

BendyBob, by jove, I'll do it for you
The only reason i didn't snap it up tbh was that I tend to get (lovely) things from charity shops and am used to paying a fiver maximum! That and all the judgey threads recently about being too dressed up or down for the school run. I always look nice, but this isn't nice, this is glam. Not sure I can pull it off, but it's worth a shot. And you;re right, I'll only be this young and hot once

SandyBits · 25/06/2010 14:40

(am also relishing the thought of not having to shave or fake tan my legs. That's worth the money alone)

OP posts:
BendyBob · 25/06/2010 14:40

Yaay!!

SagacityNell · 25/06/2010 14:40

Buy it!! It's FAB!!

I tried on every maxi dress in my town and looked either pregnant, shorter than i am, even more flat chested, or like a little girl in her mums dress (or all of that)

You could dress it down with a bolero type thing over or a denim jacket. Wear with Gladiator sandals or flip flops (for more casual)

And it's nice too. Not many i like.

Go buy.......for me coz i look STUPID in them!

SandyBits · 25/06/2010 14:42

If I can work out how I'll post a pic of me in it later so you can all be honest. I think it looks nice. But I need to know what other people think before I venture outside

OP posts:
sweetheart · 25/06/2010 14:51

I'll tell you al ittle story - about 3 or 4 years ago I brought maxi dress on impulse from Jane Norman. It was farily expensive at the time I I was planning on taking it back as I was sure I'd never get any wear out of it.

so fast forward to now and that 1 dress is one of the most key pieces in my wardrobe and I wear it loads! Even in the winter with a jumper underneath.

Buy it - if it makes you feel fab you'll make oppertunities to wear it

trilliAnasTra · 25/06/2010 14:52

I'm off to New Look! If I ever see someone (else) with a tan, dark brown hair, and 5'7 wearing it I will wave and smile

SandyBits · 25/06/2010 14:54

Oooo are they your stats too Trillian? I'm a slight pear shape and it still looks great. I am having a wobble, but think I will buy it. I cna always take it back, I can always take it back, I can always take it back....

OP posts:
trilliAnasTra · 25/06/2010 15:53

Damn, it isn't in my local New Look (I took a half hour break from work to go look, that's how much you have me hooked), so I'll have to take the plunge and order online..........

So it's drapey stretchy material, it is matt or silky?

SagacityNell · 25/06/2010 16:18

Maxi dress with a jumper? How does that work??
