Evening party dress for work do

tiredandgrumpy · 23/06/2010 18:28

Please can someone recommend a great dress for my work party in a few weeks. I'm 38 so couldn't carry off some of the younger styles but am slim and have a reasonable figure. Most of my colleagues are much younger so I don't want to look old and dowdy.

Size/height?

Budget?

Fav colours?

Length?

Any real style no-nos?

How formal a party?

I'm 5'6", a size 8-10. Style wise no idea, but have always tended to go for a more classic conservative look. Colours, well have been told I'm an 'autumn' so guess that means jewel colours. I'd rather look discretely good than stand out in a crowd. Length- guess knee length-ish. Definitely not long, anyway. Does that help? Budget is probably less than £100 but flexible. I simply have no idea where to look these days. I used to enjoy clothes shopping but since kids have forgotten how to do it!

I bought this last week, and it looks really nice on. I was not expecting it to be so nice before I tried it on.

But how about this one

or this one

I really liked the first 2 you linked to there juice. OP - with your petite figure the world is your oyster! Are you pear/apple/top heAvy?

notyummy · 24/06/2010 20:42

This is beautiful. Everyone I know who owns a VW dress raves about them. There are some better prices out there but am on iPhone so struggling to search.

Some great ideas here. Thank you. I'm just skinny without any real curves. Some of these look as though they'd work well. Now I just have to find the time to go and try some on.

If you're skinny, you can carry off something like this.

Above the knee and fitted is the way to avoid frump.
