What should a short, fat bird wear to her brothers June wedding?

HELP. I really have no idea what to wear. I have two weeks to find something. I don't do dresses/skirts and normally tend to live in jeans/top. I don't think that would go down too well (especially with the bride!).

I'm 5' 1", size 18/20 up top, 16/18 middle.

PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE help me. I don't do clothes (so much so that when my friend suggested a maxi dress the other week my response was "what is a maxi dress?" !) I am so not a clothes person that I will be needing to get new shoes too as I only have trainers, boots and wellies.

Dress from Next?

mychildrenarebarmy · 13/06/2010 19:09

It's nice but I think one of the problems I have is that anything I look at makes me think. Oh my god, there is no way that will suit me. I think I need to be brave and go try a whole load of stuff on.

That one I like but I will be brave and try it on if they have it in store. I don't like the shoes that are with it in the picture though. I'd fall over as soon as I tried to stand up!

See told you I'm rubbish with clothes!

Keep the suggestions coming (because of course no one has anything better to do than help dress me

does it help to add that I have short, stumpy legs. Or as my Granny put it once "You have tree trunk legs like me dear".

A maxi dress may be too maxi (require shortening)... I am 5ft5 and have had problems there. Will have a look.

Do you have a budget in mind?

mychildrenarebarmy · 13/06/2010 19:36

Yes definitely a budget. As little as possible would be good. I just have no idea what on earth would suit me and have buried my head in the sand about choosing something. Given that I don't know if short time + short, fat arse + budget will work. Also given my general lack of clothes knowledge I have no idea what would be a reasonable amount. See - useless.

ooh, me too. But size 18/20 up top and 12/14 middle, and then 18/20 hips hmm.

Sorry for gatecrashing your thread but thought perhaps we could look together!?

StarOfValkyrie · 13/06/2010 19:42

Is this too puffy for a fat short arse?

mychildrenarebarmy · 13/06/2010 19:44

Gatecrash away.

I also realise I should probably add I have very pale skin (VERY). I'm doomed aren't I?

OP posts:
mychildrenarebarmy · 13/06/2010 19:45

I'd need some shoes that aren't too narrow heel but does this look like something my description of me could get away with?

??????????????????

Do you need one of those dresses for super curvaceous girls? Someone posted a link before and the dresses look amazing - It was some store in London which sold mostly 40's 50's style dresses but they were totally gorgeous and would look great if you have curves...

Perhaps someone wil know which store I'm blethering on about and post the link again!!

StarOfValkyrie · 13/06/2010 19:50

I do! I do!

Pleeease Link!

Whoamireally · 13/06/2010 19:51

I found it!! Viven of Holloway

StarOfValkyrie · 13/06/2010 19:52

Oh yay

Whoamireally · 13/06/2010 19:52

Yep StarOfValkyrie if you have an hourglass figure you would look gorgeous in one of those!

MrsSeanBean · 13/06/2010 19:56

This is pretty

more classic

may be a bit too 'busy'

All Wallis, and all jersey, which I hope isn't too informal but could look gtreat accessorised, and would be OK to wear after the event...? (They also have some 'petite' maxi dresses which may work.)

StarOfValkyrie · 13/06/2010 19:56

ooh what about this one?

This will suit pale skin!?

SandyChick · 13/06/2010 19:59

What about something like this?

Why dont you make an appointment with a personal shopper at somewhere like Debenhams?

Petite

Love this but not sure what length will be like

Whoamireally · 13/06/2010 19:59

That's lovely - i love the swing dresses!! They do corsages as well so that could potentially be your whole wedding outfit, OP.

StarOfValkyrie · 13/06/2010 20:01

what's a corsage?

(sorry, but due to my figure I rarely shop for anything other than jeans and t-shirt so know nothing)

Whoamireally · 13/06/2010 20:07

one of these!

FlorenceandtheWashingMachine · 13/06/2010 20:32

There has been lots of good feeedback about John Lewis's personal shoppers on MN recently. I really think that having an expert on hand could be great for you and it's totally free.

diddl · 14/06/2010 09:37

I have something similar to this

diddl · 14/06/2010 09:40

Oop-posted instead of previewing!

The shape is surprisingly flattering-makes boob look good & skims tum, bum & thighs.

Brightonton · 14/06/2010 10:18

get cutie are great. Have a look at the gallery - loads of fab fabrics, and you can see how the dresses look on the more curvacous figure .
They have a detailed size guide so you know whether things will fit or not, and if you aren't in Brighton, they do mail order. They will also make stuff up for you if they don't currently have it.
I don't work for them honest , but lots of people rave about their clothes - really well made and fitted and unusual too . How much time do you have to get this outfit sorted?

But if you need to just go to one shop, grab and go, I'd try Wallis. I reckon you would definitely find something there. Good luck!

Whoamireally · 14/06/2010 11:45

Get Cutie is like Smafolk but for grown ups
