Glam dress needed for sleb-tastic charideee do

Pennies · 07/05/2010 11:30

I'm going to a large charity event next week and need a dress. The event is really glam and the beauuooootiful set will be there (uma therman, liz hurley, yasmin le Bon etc).

I need a long dress and a lot of help feeling glam as I'm halfway through chemo so have no hair (got a wig tho) and no boobs due to mastectomy.

So I am looking for something long, with a not too plunging neckline (can't do strapless or spaghetti straps), ideally with sleeves to hide bingo wings and in autumal colours.

I'm 5'3" size 8 / 10.

Let's pretend no budget for starters.

This is lovely and not too plungey.

gorgeous but white

Sleeves and good price

Some of this is quite interesting

It may give you some ideas on shapes as you can drape these dresses in about 10 different ways.

There's a lot of one-shouldered full length stuff around - could that work assuming that it's not too skimpily cut? If so, this is from Yasmin Le Bon's line for Wallis (which could be a conversation starter...)one-shouldered?

Does purple suit your colouring?
purple

Beautiful cut

Also nice

CybilLiberty · 07/05/2010 16:20

tethers that yellow beaded one is divine!

tethersendisnigh · 07/05/2010 16:34

I know, I dribbled a bit.

tethersendisnigh · 07/05/2010 16:35

I prefer the circle cut one though.

Bonsoir · 07/05/2010 16:45

Do you absolutely have to wear long? Because, if you are feeling self-conscious about your top half (boobs and bingo wings), you would be better off highlighting your bottom half ie legs, with a shorter dress length and fabulously amazing shoes and coordinating bag.

What do you think?

onebatmother · 07/05/2010 16:54

This is nice - there are other lovelies in Yasmin Le Bon's range for Wallis. But not long-sleeved I'm afraind

Matsikula · 07/05/2010 17:07

Sorry, missed the arms bit of the brief. Agree that short might give you more options, especially as it being summer the sleeves that are around seem to be a bit wafty and voluminous.

Or you could go for a simple and sleek dress and a shrug or cover-up. I personally am looking for an excuse to buy this

pink feather shrug

But the yellow Amanda Wakely one is also gorgeous.

tethersendisnigh · 07/05/2010 17:30

That shrug is gorgeous, Matsikula...

Amandoh · 07/05/2010 17:41

So sorry to hear you're going through chemo. I hope everything's going ok.

Love the Oasis dress TraceyBath linked to but second the question from Bonsoir - If you're a size 8-10 you probably have a great waist and slim legs. If you're feeling a little self concious about your top half and arms then get your legs out!

Amandoh · 07/05/2010 17:46

Oh, yes that shrug looks really pretty on the model. The dress she's wearing under it is lovely. Like this nude coloured dress too if you do decide to go down the shorter length route.

Pennies · 07/05/2010 19:01

Sorry - phone died.

I went to Harvey Nicks hoping they could do a Justine on me and even managed to bag myself a personal shopper. I was sorely tempted by an Amanda Wakeley dress here but it's ver verr ££££.

Will take time to peruse the suggestions here and respond as the evening progresses!

That yellow one looks amazing. Would it suit autumnal tones - I'm worried it's too yellow? There's a green one that she does as well but I'm not so sure.

Purple looks fab on me (preen, preen..) as does burnt orange, olive green, brown, russet, midnight blue, teal, peacock blue, warm reds, ochre yellows.

The Yasmin le Bon ones are lovely but as she'll v. likely be there I don't want to be wearing one of her dresses for some reason. It seems a bit obvious.

One shouldered isn't an option either. I've got a bra with multiple way see through straps though.

No halternecks pls. Haven't got the cleavage for them these days!!

Have tiny waist but quite sturdy thighs - 34, 26, 36. I'm fairly well in proportion, but not elfin and ickle.

Matsikula · 07/05/2010 19:26

Well, if I'd known you had the budget for Harvey Nichols...

midnight blue but short

Hope you are having fun browsing

Must go actually as should be styling self for rare night out.

Pennies · 07/05/2010 19:36

Gorgeous dress, but a bit too daytime perhaps.

Bonsoir - I suppose I don't have to do long it's just that last year there was lots of long. I suppose if anyone had a pop I could just take my wig off and that would make them feel reeeaaallllyyy baaaad. Mwhahahahaahaaaa. Sadly I don't think anyone would have a pop but the idea of making Jeremy Clarkson squirm is the stuff of dreams.

tethersendisnigh · 07/05/2010 19:59

I think the yellow would definitely go with autumnal tones.

Pennies · 07/05/2010 21:32

Gah! DH doesn't like it.

Love that Thurley dress. Very Grecian and perfect shape. Do you think it would look OK with my very pale skin?

Have been on NAP most of the evening and hadn't found any of them. how did you do that?!

OP posts:
sweetheart · 07/05/2010 22:31

Oh bugger - sorry my links were rubbish.

I looked on these pages on NAP - there are some really lovely dresses, I wish I could buy one to wear to a posh event!
