I have to go to a music concert at ds's new school this evening. What would you wear?

They are holding it in a concert hall. Is a purple silk dress and a cream shawl OTT?

I would wear polo neck cashmere jumper and slim skirt and slim boots. I would aim for the general area of 'chic'. But I must admit I don't know how dressy these things are, ds1 is in reception (we have only had the odd assembly so far).

Earplugs.

Shaz10 · 05/05/2010 14:33

Grin Grin Grin

I don't own a cahsmere jumper. It's his new secondary school (it's a bit posh).

I can do earplugs, my hair is long so it will cover them anyway

Was just thinking of my clothing, obv doesn't have to be cashmere. Overall I'd just go understated, neat and chic.

Any pics on website of past concerts to check what others wear?

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 05/05/2010 14:43

Nope. I looked

I could do a black pencil skirt and some sort of top , then I'll have it sussed for next time.

I'd go for the dress and perhaps a little cardigan on top.

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 05/05/2010 14:46

I could wear a wrap over the top?? (I should have done more washing yesterday )

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 05/05/2010 14:49

Damn, I want to look glam! I'm sitting here in jeans and a jumper!

Belle - you'll look fine.

There will be a real mix of parents from the boden clad, to uber-glam to those who look like they've just finished mucking out the horses and have put on their 'good frock' from 15 years ago

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 05/05/2010 14:52

Thankyou.

Wear the dress, have a fab time. Come back and let me know what others wore

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 05/05/2010 14:54

I will do!

Now I'm excited for you! What instrument is your ds playing?

MarshaBrady · 05/05/2010 15:09

(which)

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 05/05/2010 16:26

Ds isn't playing, it's the secondary school's summer concert, he starts there in September. They sent us an invite (I think it's so they can show off )
He did play the piano but they don't have lessons at his current school so he plays the guitar instead.

And it's raining so the silk dress is a no-go

OP posts:
MarshaBrady · 05/05/2010 16:36

oh

Still what fun to see your ds' new school on action

MarshaBrady · 05/05/2010 16:38

about the rain, of course. and in action. crikey!

trench coat?

KristinaM · 05/05/2010 16:41

if you are unsure about dress code you need to err on the side of caution. day dress and cardi / jacket is ok. silk evening dress and wrap - bit risky IMO - its worse to look over dressed

skirt and top might be safer option i think - you wont be the most glamorous but you wont stand out.

is it city posh or country posh? old money or nouveau riche?

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 05/05/2010 16:42

I have a trench coat, it's not waterproof though.

I thought it would be nice for him, he has an induction day in June so it would be helpful if he recognised a few faces (that's the plan anyway )

OP posts:
BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 05/05/2010 16:44

It's city posh, new and old rich.

School concerts have a dress code?

It's a school concert. You will sit (for too long)on uncomfortable chairs in a stuffy hall which will be too hot or too over air-conditioned or drafty, you will be offered lukewarm wine in a plastic cup. Or not.

Wear clean jeans and a nice juper and a jacket you can take on or off according to heat.

KristinaM · 05/05/2010 16:50

smart day wear then

assuming you want to look boring and blend in, rather than make a statement. IME kids prefer their parents to look boring

if it was formal or evening dress it would say so on the invitations
