Am not the tallest...... 5'4 at a push.... am a size 10/12 (post baby bulgy bits). Can I get away with a maxi dress? Or will I look like I'm wearing a tent?

I'm smaller than you - but prob about that in heels

I avoid. Nice in my head / on someone else.. but no getting away from fact I look like a hobbit in one

brimfull · 01/05/2010 10:36

in high heels yes
in flats only if the maxi comes to ankle not lower

bishboschone · 01/05/2010 12:31

i am 5ft..i wear them ..I am size 8 and curvy but everything is in the right place if that makes sense . I think they are very flattering if they are fitted . In some ways I think they enlongate you.

Anyways wear what you want..why should you not wear what you like. I am never gonna grow so I just get on with it. If we only wore what would suit someone 5ft9 we would never leave the house!!

teta · 01/05/2010 13:05

I do and don't look like a hobbitBut keep on tripping over them coming up and down the stairs!Does anyone else have this problem?

bishboschone · 01/05/2010 14:21

yeah i do but i discreetly lift up one side.
Also I am lucky I have a very good tailor and I mostly have them shortened.

mountainmonkey · 01/05/2010 14:49

I'm 5'2" and quite like the idea but haven't come across one that wouldn't be trailing on the floor.

Magaly · 01/05/2010 17:53

I have to qualify this by saying that I am shorter than you,,,, But sorry, I would say no to a maxi dress.

If you are five foot four and size 10 you will look good in ALMOST every style, you are lucky. But maxi dresses - I think five foot six and above. Just my opinion of course!

KnottyLocks · 01/05/2010 18:12

I'm your height, size 10/12 and do wear them, but only the more streamlined and/or fitted styles.
I stay away from the billowing ones for fear of being mistaken for a toilet dolly.

nicds · 01/05/2010 18:43

Hiya, have you looked on Next and Drothy Perkins, they have a petites section!

ALittleHelpPlease · 01/05/2010 18:50

I'm 5'4" too, sz 10-12 and I have one - I haven't worn it yet. It's a Boden one though so feel free to disregard my opinion entirely .

It's plain black jersey, not too voluminous and has proper straps (not spaghetti) and doesn't flash my saggy cleavage - I really liked it when I tried it on and it was flattering, whereas all the ones I tried on last summer looked awful. So imo yes, you can wear one but choose carefully.

I'd avoid it, really.

KnottyLocks · 01/05/2010 19:15

The only way is to go and try a few on.

Maybe take an honest friend. If she is tall and slim, do not let her try the same dresses as you.

notnearlyasblondasiwas · 01/05/2010 19:32

After trying on around 10 today and coming home with nothing, I can confirm that height has nothing to do with it. If you are over a size 14 avoid! I am 6'1 and a size 16 and looked like a hot air balloon! Go for it!

Zembo · 01/05/2010 19:41

Well I'm around the 5ft mark and am planning to wear.. I'm a slim size 8 and I think they look fine.

Anyone seen any petite ones in real shops rather than online?

darkandstormy · 01/05/2010 22:23

just been singing the praises of the newlook 15 quid maxi, myself am tall this one bit short on me but bought it as only ever in flats, would be great on you with a little wedge sandal, give it a whirl,it's nice cos not too fussy.

BooBooChicken · 02/05/2010 14:56

might it make you look like a hovercraft?
i am tall but sadly also wide, i would look like a marquee in a maxi

elsiepiddock · 02/05/2010 17:44

I do think they can look a bit daft on short people, sorry! But maybe because I think they look really daft with high shoes..

hettie · 02/05/2010 18:51

mmme mixed opinio....maybe try on a few in the petite ranges?

OP posts:
bishboschone · 02/05/2010 18:59

I always wear maxis , I am short and small I always wear flat shoes,( agree they look silly with heel s) stick to straight ones. It's a good look. Ignore all the tall people!

Zembo · 02/05/2010 19:01

Totally agree bishboschone it is a good look as long as not too much volume, and yes better with flats.

Clure · 02/05/2010 22:46

just bought one from AX paris range in new look. i'm 5'1 size 6-8. Bought a size 8 but having to take up the straps due to lack of norks. so its hoistered up a couple of inches, I will wear with wedge sandals, DH who never comments on clothes said "wow it makes you look taller"
think it good to get one thats a bit fitted around underbust to waist area so that its not voluminous otherwise would drown petite figure.

I also tried on this which is a great fit and not too "traily and voluminous"

Miss selfridge had a lovely black embelished one in their petite section. Try on a few thats the only way you'll know!

Zembo · 03/05/2010 06:45

Thanks Clure will have a look in Miss Selfridge although haven't been in there for decades!

hmm...this thread has now got me a bit worried..

Im due at a wedding next weekend and bought a maxi dress from coast..admired it for weeks till I finally got around to dress shopping for the wedding and I tried it on.

4yr dd hated it, me thinks cause its not pink which is my usual colour..dh also not keen...me thinks because im normally in short dresses..

Im 4ft 11 and wanted to wear something that was floaty and made me look glam.. Have I mad a mistake..?!

I personally think I look fab, dh has also now agreed I guess having "got used " to the look iykwim.

Also, Im wearing heels, with heels the dress floats along the floor iykiwm so you can't see heels (unlike on the model in the pic)...why do people sems against them with heels.? Coz you can see heels or not..?

Dress is as shown here. OR here

BTW,im a 12/14 (bought in a 14 to fit hips..bust fit a little big but doesn't look wrong iykwim..) I plan to wear it as a halter neck..

Im also hoping that the stripes are flattering..

PlumSykes · 03/05/2010 19:30

Think of Nicole Richie. She looks GREAT in maxi. It just needs to be slim-fitting, and prob come ankle rather than floor.

Shhhh, I think the issue with heels is that it can look a bit WAG-at-Aintree-tastic, when a maxi should be more laid-back boho-luxe glamour.
