Has anyone tried on the New Look black £15 maxi dress?

I reeeeally want this and have stroked it in store SO many times, but I just can't bring myself to try it on. It's quite thin tshirt material and I can just imagine it accentuating my lumps and bumps. Am I just being a drama queen and it's actually really flattering, or should I leave it be?

I took it as far as the changing room today then chickened out!

Thanks Cordonbleugh I'll give one a go then.

The Oasis one does look very oddly cut. Shame because the top of the back is nice.

sweetheart · 29/04/2010 15:02

I tried it thinking I would love it but it came up quite short on me - I'm about 5.5 - 5.6. I was above my ankles (sort of calf length) which is not a good look on me. I've ordered one very similar from ASOS instead

MrsMeow · 29/04/2010 15:03

Thanks everyone, I'm going to bite the bullet and try it on. Tempted to try the Oasis one on as well, I wonder if it's any thicker/heavier than the NL one?

Cordon, I heart Nicole Richie. Love her style

Tulpe, those knickers are minging, but bloody hell they look comfy! I could dp with some actually, I always seem to have one bumcheek hanging out of my usual ones

sweetheart, that's helpful thanks. I held it up against me in store and it looked as though it was going to skim the top of my feet. I definitely needto try it on then - I;m the same height as you.

Hi, I like the look of this dress but I too am concerned about cling factor to the dreaded belly (am 7 months post natal but still have awful mum tum, am beginning to really really bloody hate it, never had this after dd, am thin everywhere else, most of my pre pg clothes now look s**t because of it). I LOVE these style of dresses though...

tried the oasis one on on Tuesday, looked OKish but not enough to make me buy it, does anyone have links to any others? Maybe slightly thicker/better quality? (Oasis one is pretty thin with racer back so would have to go strapless bra and boobs look even more mumsy in strapless).

MrsMeow · 29/04/2010 15:25

minx, that's exactly what's putting me off as well - except I'm now 6 years post natal! I've tried everything to get rid of my jelly belly, but nothing works I'm also a couple of lbs heavier than I should be!

Thanks for the advice on the Oasis one. I wouldn't mind paying a bit more for it if it were more flattering than the NL one. I was hoping it would be thicker material.

I think I'd risk one of these dresses if I could wear something over the top - long cardi or something. But that just defeats the object really!

mrsmeow am going to see if a combo of personal training and pilates/yoga/cycling works for the next 12 months or so and if not am serioualy considering surgery!! Never thought I would be so vain but I just feel like I look like crap all the time as it's so obvious on my small frame this big lump of belly overhang. I'm not even overweight.

It's ds fault for being such a monster baby!

sweetheart · 29/04/2010 16:10

try this one instead

I ordered it and I've sent it to exchange for a size smaller (Yippee)! If you zoom in you can see that rather than being straight cut it has an empire line sewn in so that rather than cling to your belly / hips etc it actually skims over them - it is really really flowey fabric too.

Only think is it's not in black like the new look one but I actually prefer navy to black.

mippy · 29/04/2010 16:13

New Look's tall range is for 5ft 6 and over. I've kind of given up on their clothing (though the Inspire range is often longer if that helps)

crumpetsolo · 29/04/2010 18:02

Gap have a very similar one in that's got thick twisted straps and a v neck instead of the racer back style, so you can wear a bra with it. It's lovely, but twice the price, but frankly racer backs are really impractical bra-wise. Comes in purple and black too.

MrsMeow · 30/04/2010 11:32

Thanks again everyone. I tried it on at last! It actually looked a LOT better than I was expecting, wasn't really clingy at all. But it's very sheer material - I am wearing a bra with sequins on, and you could see the sequins shining through!

It would have looked much better if it were thicker, and I think I'd have to invest in some big knickers as well Going to look at some of the others linked to (thanks ) because other than the sheerness I was impressed. The length was just right on me by the way, if anyone was wondering how long it was. I'm just over 5'5" and it skimmed the top of my feet.

Thanks for your help!

minxofmancunia you're not vain at all, I know exactly how you feel. I sprang back into shape after DD, but DS was 8lb 12oz and big to boot so I was huge by the end. I don't so much have a fat stomach, but loose skin It's fine tucked in to jeans but no good for stuff like this dress!!

I think surgery would be the only way I could get rid of mine. Unfortunately it's not an option at the minute.

Good job we love our kids eh?!!

I have just bought this today.I am 5'8 and a 10 ,I do have a minor jelly belly issue, and it skimmed right over it.Tbh the length only just fits but I am not really a heels girl, I have my ballet pumps lined up an waiting.I am not that fussed on showing of my white not so toned arms so will be wearing with a shrug.I would say it is a great, and flattering buy,for those like me who fancy a maxi but not a flouncy affair I think it would flatter most people and could be dressed up or down.

tulpe · 01/05/2010 21:34

MrsMeow those knickers are indeed minging but I try and con myself that I am rocking some 50's retro chic by wearing them......

minxofmancunia & MrsMeow.....I feel your pain with the loose skin issue. I have put up with it since I had DS1 10 years ago and now have an appointment this Friday for a consultation for tummy tuck . I have resisted this far - it hasn't stopped me from wearing a bikini because I feel life is too short - but I would like to look like me again so I am exploring my options

Fleecy · 01/05/2010 22:07

Oh tulpe - I wish I'd seen those knickers earlier, not because I like them, but because I bought the NL maxi a few weeks ago and returned it because I couldn't find any undies that didn't leave a VPL under it.

Purchased this in the week and took the tags off today! Much nicer IRL than it looks on site and you can wear a bra underneath. But if you go down a size, it's not too wide and floaty looking, a bit more slinky. But 2x price of NL one!

wahwah · 02/05/2010 08:34

I got this a couple of weeks ago-I'm tall too, but it's not a bad length, it's a nice simple cut, washes well and can be dressed up or down. It's great!

MrsMeow · 04/05/2010 14:05

tulpe oh how exciting! I hope the consultation goes well - you're a braver woman than I!

fleecy I really like that dress, the cut looks very flattering and that neckline makes anyones boobies look great! The colour wouldn't suit me unfortunately, I don't suppose you noticed any different colours did you? I can only see khaki on the website.

OP posts:
Fleecy · 05/05/2010 18:03

It's much greener IRL than it looked on the site, if that's any help. I saw it in store and wondered why I hadn't noticed it online - think it's because the colour is so much more faded online. They do it in black and 'mocha' as well, although goodness knows what it looks like in the flesh!

LinaLamont · 05/05/2010 19:32

I've got this one which is similar. It's not clingy and flattering even on my size 14 lumpy bits. www.dorothyperkins.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId= 20552&storeId=12552&categoryId=200501&parentcategoryrn=49448&productId=1710004&langId=-1

darkandstormy · 05/05/2010 19:34

fleecy love that dp dress, I shall be checking that one out..really smart. What is the length like though looks quite short.

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 05/05/2010 19:41

Tulpe - those knickers don't hold anything in..

NoahAndTheWhale · 05/05/2010 19:47

I am feeling very tempted by these dresses. May go and look at some.

MrsMeow · 05/05/2010 20:08

Fleecy - thanks, I'll have a look in store as soon as I can. V tempted to get it if I can find it in black (and it suits me of course!)

LinaLamont, I think I've seen that one IRL. It's lovely. Would look terrible on me though, I have big hips and horizontal stripes do nothing for them!

darkandstormy · 05/05/2010 20:46

lina am off to town pronto.

Fleecy · 05/05/2010 22:27

I'm almost 5'8" and it's long enough for me so worth a try darkandstormy
