weight / height / dress size - please explain why I'm so bloody heavy!!!!!!!

I was reading the beginning of this thread and I wondered how is it possible for me to be the same sort of clothes size as the 1st two women but weight a stone - 1.5 stone MORE than them

I am shorter - so doesn't that mean I should be fatter?

I'm about 5ft 5 and have a size 8 top and 10 bottom (sometimes 12 depending on the shop but not very often.) But these ladies are around 9 stone whereas I'm 10.

Can someone please explain it to me as I spend my whole life dieting!

I am really heavy too...I am only 5ft 1 size 8 but 9 stone. People are always surprised i am so heavy but I am quite muscly. I feel your pain!!

Katz · 20/04/2010 16:43

I'm heavy always have been - in the past i've had both doctors and midwives make me get back on scales because they haven't believed how much the scales said i weigh based on how i look. I do believe that some people have heavier bones. Right now though i def weigh a lot more than i should and am fat!

justallovertheplace · 20/04/2010 16:43

That's just the way it goes. Height makes a big difference. Last October me and my friend weighed exactly the same, 14 stone 5. I am 5'7 and she is 5'11, I was an 18, she was a 14. I have lost weight, taking me to 9 stone 12, a size 10. She has lost about a stone, taking her to 13 stone 5 and is now a 12. She has huuuuge boobs though, which must weigh a lot

LadyGaggia · 20/04/2010 16:44

Possible answers:

You have very fat wrists, feet, ankles, neck etc...
You have denser muscles
You have thicker bones
You have rapunzelesque tresses

uhhh....

BunnyLebowski · 20/04/2010 16:48

I would really struggle to believe that someone weighing 14st 5lb was a size 14 justallovertheplace.

OP I know what you mean. One of my friends told me that I must 'weigh heavy' because we were the same weight but in her eyes I was about a stone lighter and a dress size smaller.

Oh I love that friend

justallovertheplace · 20/04/2010 16:53

Bunny, it's true. She is very tall though, and has massive boobs which I think must contribute a LOT to the weight. Her actual body, hips and everything weren't that big (well, compared to how bad I looked )

bishboschone · 20/04/2010 17:15

I have very tiny wrist, hands and feet so that isnt the answer. I think I have a very small frame that carries more weight than it should sespite being a small size so I think it just comes down to muscle. I have quite big thighs (proportionally)

traceybath · 20/04/2010 17:38

It also depends on what shop they're a size 8 in.

I'm 5ft and a size 6/8 but thats in shops I class as small sizing - in next for example a 6 is big on me as they size big.

Monadami · 20/04/2010 17:45

It would depend on bone density, your frame could be larger than some women or you could be more muscular, carrying less fat.

I regularly workout with weights and am overweight at present, weighing in at 13 stones 8 pounds, I'm a size 14-16, yet another woman weighing the same, who has low muscle density, but carries more fat than could be size 18 plus.

It's all to do with frame, muscle and bone density.

CantSupinate · 20/04/2010 18:01

I don't understand why you spend your whole life dieting, OP. You sound like a very good (healthy and attractive) size for your height. Throw away the scales, maybe?

sweetheart · 20/04/2010 20:02

I have small wrists, neck etc so I don't think that's it.

I do try hard to stay fit which includes 4 or 5 gym visits a week to weight train or run and I play netball a couple of times a week too. I do have large thighs. When I went to hospital for a sports injury recently the Dr called me "athletic" which I took great offence to!

I am diet / fitness mad I'm afraid and the scales come out nearly every day but that is a whole other issue!

Do you think a dr would be able to tell me if I have dense or heavy bones / muscle?

OP posts:
Celery · 20/04/2010 20:14

If you're a size 8-10, does it really matter how much you weigh? People can't see you're weight, it's just a number. If you forget about the numbers, are you happy with with how you look?

sweetheart · 20/04/2010 20:19

No celery not happy at all - that why I'm always dieting and exercising! I'd have a full body makeover if I could afford it

OP posts:
traceybath · 20/04/2010 20:29

It depends how you want to look. Some exercise can bulk you up especially in the thighs.

I'd have thought a dr would only be interested in bone density if you suspected you'd got osteoporosis.

Sweetheart, it does sound like you might have a distorted idea of what a good body size would be for you. Would you be brave enough to post a pic of your body from neck down on your profile, let people give you feedback on your proportions?

well I deffo don't have a body like that!

OP posts:
sweetheart · 21/04/2010 16:58

I could post a pic but I'm sure there would be lots of polite "you're fine the way you are" comments which is not true to me.

OP posts:
sweetheart · 21/04/2010 17:01

can't actually find a good photo to post at the moment.

Feelingsensitive · 21/04/2010 17:31

They are probably lying.

Ifs any comfort I am 11 stone and 5' 4"

Slugbrains · 21/04/2010 18:07

Ok, what stands out to me is the I am slways dieting and exercising comment. When i was training 20hours/week I was a size 8 and weighed 11 stone. Most of that was muscle. I am currently 11 stone and size 10/12, it is currently fat. Having not properally exercised in ages. It makes a huge difference the ratio of muscle to fat!.
