I was reading the beginning of this thread and I wondered how is it possible for me to be the same sort of clothes size as the 1st two women but weight a stone - 1.5 stone MORE than them

I am shorter - so doesn't that mean I should be fatter?

I'm about 5ft 5 and have a size 8 top and 10 bottom (sometimes 12 depending on the shop but not very often.) But these ladies are around 9 stone whereas I'm 10.

Can someone please explain it to me as I spend my whole life dieting!

I hope that's the case slug - although my netball team all seem to have lighter weights too.

I prefer weight training because it gives me a more toned body but I guess that means I weigh more

Yep it will do! you build denser muscle when you do weights to the muscle you build through basic moving about type exercise. Difference between lean and dense muscle (or in chicken terms dark and white meat). Thus is you do a lot of weights you encourage denser muscle development which weighs more.

Slugbrains · 21/04/2010 18:44

Sorry am trying to sort tea and getting distracted. am not implying any comparison to chickens just contimplating whether to have chicken thighs or breast for tea

SixtyFootDoll · 21/04/2010 18:51

I am always a bit at my weight
I am 5'6 and a size 12 top and bottom, i weigh 10 stone 10 and that never changes!!
I exercise 2-3 times a week mainly body pump and spin.
I am pretty muscular with flat stomach but chunky thighs

I kno wweight doesnt really matter but I would love to be lighter, I am heavier than soome of my male friends!

And no one believes me when I say what i weigh

Slugbrains · 21/04/2010 19:02

TBH i have had that problem too. I even had to stand on a pair of scales to prove it. at which point they declared the scales broken It was the hospital that put everything right when i damaged my knee. they put it all into prespective saying that they were surprised i weighed so little considering how much i trained. THink i almost passed out at the time but in hind sight it made me feel so much better about myself. Until i got pregnant and lazy and the muscle turned to fat and wobbled. But then it was justified. Cant wait to become my toned 11stone size 8/10 again. I cba re weight these days and go on clothes sizes.

Oh and if you do more then a certain amount of exercise per week it distort the bmi value, so that it cant be relied on. Good example was the rower who got the 10 olympics Steven redgrave (?) who was officially obese according to the BMI but skinny as anything to see. so you need to mention the amount of training if BMI issues are brought up.

SixtyFootDoll · 21/04/2010 20:36

yes my bmi is bordering on obese

Slugbrains · 21/04/2010 20:47

But if you are training lots that is not a true BMI!!!! BMI and fat measure scales actually say the dont work if you do more then a certain amount of exercise per week!!!!

SixtyFootDoll · 21/04/2010 20:50

I know but it doesnt do much for the ego!

Slugbrains · 21/04/2010 21:00

True but you have to make the decision whether or not to judge yourself by the standards set for those who chose one life style and those who chose another. I dont work in stones because i can't handle how i feel about it. 12 stone is sooo to a lot of people I work in kilos because that is what i can handle. I have made that choice. I dont worry about by bmi but my waist hip ratio and things like that that are very telling wrt health consequences and are not adversely affected by quantity of exercise. as long as those are in the right range i am happy. maybe this is something that you can try?

Lastyearsmodel · 21/04/2010 21:02

A friend and I discussed this recently - we both always weigh more than other people who wear the same clothes size. At my slimmest (maintainable) fit weight of 11 stone, size 14, 5'8", people would be shocked at my weight. And looking back, I looked slim and was exercising 3x a week, so muscle mass may have something to do with it.

Weight (unless extremely high or low) is a notoriously unreliable measure of overall health, beauty and self-esteem.

goodnightmoon · 21/04/2010 21:27

sweetheart, it sounds like me. i put it down to my chunky limbs weighing more while my torso is actually quite slim.

SixtyFootDoll · 21/04/2010 21:35

I am sure I have heavy bones.....

KristinaM · 21/04/2010 21:43

sweetheart - i am also 5'5'' and size 8 bottom and size 10 top. i have big boobs and a very slim frame. i weight 9'5 and i think i look fine [modest]. I cant imgaine why you spend your life dieting if you are only a few pounds heavier than me

in an ideal world I would like to lose some inches off my post baby / cs tummy but not overall IYSWIM.

hope you dont mind me asking - have you ever had an eating disorder?

KristinaM · 21/04/2010 21:45

forgot to add i also do weight training

sweetheart · 22/04/2010 11:41

thanks for sharing your stories - I really need to learn to throw the scales away as I know they are bad for my state of mind but I just can't resist getting on them nearly every bloody day!

Kristina - I don't have an eating disorder, I'm not slim enough and I love my food way too much! I deffo don't have a healthy relationship with food though but I am very aware of the problem and try my best not to expose my crazy side too often :-D

I don't think that there are many women who can actually say they do have a good food relationship though are there?

Ideally I would LOVE to be about 9stone 7 but I got to 9stone 10 a few years ago and was practically killing myself to stay there. Long slogs in the gym every day and eating practically nothing!

Honestly, I don't think I will ever be happy. No matter how little I weigh there is always something about my body that disgusts me!

OP posts:
sweetheart · 22/04/2010 11:52

so how do I add a bloomin photo then?

OP posts:
sweetheart · 22/04/2010 11:56

ok done it I think - be aware it's not a very good one but the most recent one I have of me standing up

OP posts:
Ronaldinhio · 22/04/2010 11:57

I wear anything from a 10 to a 14 depending on the cut of the clothes and my norks
I'm not bothered about the size on the hanger...just the fit

I diet when I have the start of a tyre or moonface onset but pay no attention to the scales as that way lies madness.
Bit of extra movement and less crap sorts it out

bishboschone · 22/04/2010 19:33

ok, firstly I am a similar shape and my husband loves it. Secondly I think it is to do with the heavier bottom half. It makes you weigh more. I have friends who are more of an apple(sorry apples) with not very nice figures and they weigh much less than me.
Embrace it , you have a great shape ..you should feel blessed.

btw...Today I am wearing size 8 clothes from tip to toe , my waist is 24 inches , I am short and I weigh 9 stone..I have a friend who weighs 7.5 and I lent her my size 8 dress and she couldn't do it up...go figure!!

Tinasan · 22/04/2010 19:51

Sweetheart, I think you've got a fantastic figure. And also think that Bishboschone is right - you have a heavier bottom half which makes you weigh a bit more than you look. You look about 9.5 stone to me!

FWIW, I'm the same height as you and weigh about 8st 10. Usually an 8 on the bottom and 8 or 10 on top. Quite unhappy with my weight following 2 kids, used to be nearer 8st. Clothes from before the kids more or less fit me but I have to squeeze my crepey tummy in more than I used to. I have really skinny legs and hips, slight tummy but great big boobs that make me look really out of proportion. Also quite a round face, so if I put on any more weight I start to look chubby even if most of me is slim. I would prefer to have your problem - if you are slim up top I think it looks much more elegant.

Lizzylou · 22/04/2010 19:57

Totally agree that if you are slim up top then you always look slimmer and more elegant.
You look fab, Sweetheart, don't judge yourself by the scales.

My friend has recently lost a lot of weight, there is not an ounce of spare flesh on her, she looks amazing, she has a BMI of 27! I was gobsmacked. She looks perfect.

bishboschone · 22/04/2010 19:58

Ah see my theory is correct..if you are hourglass or pear you are heavier.

sweetheart · 23/04/2010 09:58

so basically it's my fat arse weighing me down - I shall get myself off to the gym and sqat like I've never sqatted before

And today I have a pair of size 10 Gap trousers on which are too big so yippee - although a size 8 would probably be too small (do Gap size bigger or smaller?!?!?!)

Perhaps i should tell dh to throw our scales away or hide them. Although I think I would go into meltdown. I sometimes lay in bed in the mornings thinking about going to weigh myself trying to resisit the urge!

Bish - don't you love it when your friends can't get into your clothes - such a boost! I will keep telling myself muscles weights more than fat

OP posts:
KristinaM · 23/04/2010 10:11

sweetheart, all the squats in the world will not change your basic body type. you are a pear, I am a lollipop, like tinsan. as everyone has said, you look great.

i hope this comes over in the spirit in which is is meant - i think you have issues with food / body image and you need to do a bit of work on these. you might be happier in yourself.

you should not be " practically killing " youreslf with " Long slogs in the gym every day and eating practically nothing!"

If you feel " disgusted" with your body, it cant be doing much for you sex life either

yes, few women think they have the perfect body, even models. but when i read this

"Honestly, I don't think I will ever be happy. No matter how little I weigh there is always something about my body that disgusts me!"

i do think you need to do some emotional work rather than more dieting or obsessive exercise. please think about it

sweetheart · 23/04/2010 10:26

Km no offence taken and I totally agree with you - except for the part about my sex life, that's just fine and dandy thankyou

I know I have food / body / diet / exercise issues. I've no idea where they came from but I am trying to be a more rounded and normal human being
