What do you wear on your legs when you want to get them out but you're the wrong side of 40?

And the wrong side of a size 14? I can't wear jeans all summer... want to show a bit of leg, have terrible knees though. Most shorts are too short, and longer ones make me look like a scout leader.

A-line cotton skirt

Yes! I do work for the A-line Skirt Board

noddyholder · 19/04/2010 19:47

Dresses and fake tan?

chandellina · 19/04/2010 19:48

footless tights with something over the knee?

Lindy · 19/04/2010 19:49

Capri trousers - or whatever their correct name is - I wear them a lot - and well over 40 and size 14 !!

Never looked at 'style and beauty' thread before ......... for obvious reasons.

HeadFairy · 19/04/2010 19:56

Do skirts and dresses not feel too smart? I'm talking about just schleping around town or taking ds to the park.... Mind you, perhaps I should be thinking of looking a little less dressed down! What shoes do you wear with an a line skirt that don't make your legs look like tree trunks and your ankles look like cankles, and are also quite casual?

well I wear wedge sandals with mine in the summer but not to the park ... no good for being a lion and chasing dd in.

Ummmm, ballet flats?

traceybath · 19/04/2010 20:12

MissWooWoo is the a-line skirt PR and I work for the rolled up chinos association.

Seriously, I got these from new look and they're fab.

With a t-shirt and heels - they're casual/on-trend and comfy.

traceybath · 19/04/2010 20:13

These I meant

MissWooWoo · 19/04/2010 20:15

tis true traceybath tis true

traceybath · 19/04/2010 20:18

And both would look fab with a new look pleather jacket

faustina · 19/04/2010 20:19

I would like to join the rolled-up chinos association too, but for when it's really hot I prefer straight skirts - they are more flattering than A line. In linen or cotton they don't look too try hard - with wedges and a t-shirt - very comfortable. Easier than shorts that's for sure.

MissWooWoo · 19/04/2010 20:26

I look like like a big fat sausage in a straight skirt, A-line is so much more forgiving for my arse and thunder thighage

MissWooWoo · 19/04/2010 20:28

like not like like

dearprudence · 19/04/2010 20:29

Cotton patterned skirts (from white stuff or somewhere like that) with vest t-shirt and denim jacket.

Length and shape of skirt needs to be what suits you. I wear just below the knee (narrowest part of my leg) and a soft fabric because I have very wide hips.

Or short jeans, but again just below the knee - the mid-calf length ones are hideous on me.

And foundation on the legs works wonders.

isittooearlyforgin · 19/04/2010 20:58

hot pants every time

KristinaM · 19/04/2010 21:20

i have a small arse and thighs [preens] but also like A line skirts as they balance out my huge norks. can i join your club miss woowoo?
and can you recommend any knee length A line skirts for me?

cyb · 19/04/2010 21:23

head fairy get thee some fake tan and stop worrying

AnyFucker · 19/04/2010 21:31

A-line knee length skirt in casual material eg. from Fat Face...with Birkies or flip flops

Gap khakis rolled up with same footwear

Linen trousers, legs not out as such but nice and wafty around the shins

I love summer

Am 44, btw and my varicose veins are not very nice to look at

thegirlwithsomethingextra · 19/04/2010 21:33

Dresses and leggings / footless tights.

springlambanana · 19/04/2010 21:34

MissWW I am slightly over 40 and am a big fan of the a line skirt, wedge heel combo. Do you suffer from inner thigh rubbage though and if so do you have a solution?

cyb · 19/04/2010 21:36

wedge heels make everyones legs look slimmer

cyb · 19/04/2010 21:50

I am sporting my new cropped 'joggers' from H & M soo flattering, come just below the kneee and make ones arse look good. I can wear them with anyhting

Even dd (style monitor) said they looked ok

praise indeed

AnyFucker · 19/04/2010 21:56

I have some lovely, soft grey and nestly just-under-the-knee joggers from Republic

Sounds awful...but it works

HeadFairy · 19/04/2010 22:17

springlambanana... that's my worry, talc or there's some anti chafe stuff on the market I'm sure, but it's an eternal worry for the chunky of thigh. I think that's why I won't be joining the A line skirt club until I've shifted some of this baby weight (half a stone in two weeks so far , so not that unrealistic)

I might have to join the rolled up chinos club until weight loss has progressed to such a point as my thighs can cope with. I do like those ones traceybath, but don't they make your thighs look chunky with those pleats? Or do you have svelte thighs?

Right so shopping list so far reads fake bake, clam diggers\rolled up chinos and sexy wedges.

springlambanana · 19/04/2010 22:28

It was never a problem headfairy but last summer I really noticed it and it aint a nice sensation. Does talc work?

I might go and try a pair of the rolled up chinos - are they ok with wedges do you think?

AF I don't think I could do the joggers with my fat arse.
