radley bags cool or uncool?

i find myself liking one or two of the bags this year (primrose hill and grosvenor) neither of which have the dog hanging of them. But i am wondering if i'm just getting old? as i always thought they were bags for rather prim and proper older women who thought they were being 'funky' (type who shop in per una ) or have they genuinley improved?
i'm 34 on tuesday, mum of 4 aged 12-8 months, am i turning into my mother? i'm normally a marc jacobs, mulberry, mimi etc type of handbag lover.

and though i rather like this offering from Marc JAcobs, quite alot of the collection has more tassles and faff than a whole Marks & Spencers worth of Per Una.

crispycake · 11/04/2010 19:37

I am not uncool at all.
Im 23 and i have two of the radley pocket bags. (across body bags)
I do think the handbags are abit granny tho

MaineGirl · 11/04/2010 21:15

Just to clear up i haver never been overly concerned by who had a radley bag and who had mulberry, burberry, osprey, clarks, primark etc but i guess my feeling that radley is for the older woman is based on the fact that my mother has a large collection of them and is the type of woman i described, shes 54 and likes to think of herself as a cool granny.
and part of my 'fear' of radley is probably my fear of turning into my mother!!!!
eap- think you managed to find the two most hideous mulberry bags there on the site! i can assure you mine are very tasteful with not a tassle or lurid colour in sight, same for my marc jacobs'(stella tote and totally turnlock magazine tote)
oh and think i might got the grosvenor, i can always send it back if its horrible.

The across body bags are ace eg for playground etc with kids. Don't really rate the rest of the collection but don't sneer either.

PatsyStone · 11/04/2010 21:53

Another vote for uncool.

My mum has one that I got her as she loves them, and I also fear turning into her... (I love her really!)

I used to toy with the idea of Radley when I was a (very) young mum trying desperately to look older and for some silly reason 'mumsy'. Now I spend my time trying to do the complete opposite...

SixtyFootDoll · 11/04/2010 22:01

My Mum wears Per una and loves Radley bags
Therefore I can condone neither.

OhCobblers · 11/04/2010 22:35

another vote for "uncool" i'm afraid.
not that i'm cool at all but i just don't like them.

BUT i've always thought you should go with what YOU like and know you'll use!

However, i'm also getting old (38!) as i saw a pair of loafers on the M&S website earlier and thought "ooh they look comfy" over style clearly

MaineGirl · 12/04/2010 14:44

cobblers, i brought some lovely shoes from m&s the other week and clarks too. maybe need to right myself a remnder for when i go shopping, am 34 not 54 lol.

OMG, do you need to ask? Uncool uncool uncool.....it'll age you before your time, you're 34 not 64....

domesticslattern · 12/04/2010 19:29

When I go to a particular kind of conference, I see row after row of ladies "of a certain age" lovingly parking their Radley bags under the seat in front. You can look down the row, counting dogs. I had to bury my (much loved) Radley bag after said women started coming up to me at the tea break and start a "oh-look-we-have-the-same-taste-even-though-I-am-thirty-years-older-than-you" conversation. A shame, cos I quite liked it.

(Mind you, I am achingly uncool).

Hulababy · 12/04/2010 19:35

I don't care if they are cool or not. I have a couple of Radly handbags and I like them. I am 37y and know people 10 years younger and 30 years old with them.

I am nt into handbags at all really. I just don't get the need for several. Same goes for shoes.

I bought my first Radley bag because I owned (or rather the dog owned me) a Scottie dog.

I love my Radley bags. I don't give a pinch of salt if Radley bags are uncool. I buy a bag because I like it, not if other people like them.

The leather is lovely, they last for ages and their across body bags are so easy to wear.

Buy what you like, not what everyone else thinks is cool/uncool.
