radley bags cool or uncool?

MaineGirl · 10/04/2010 22:55

i find myself liking one or two of the bags this year (primrose hill and grosvenor) neither of which have the dog hanging of them. But i am wondering if i'm just getting old? as i always thought they were bags for rather prim and proper older women who thought they were being 'funky' (type who shop in per una ) or have they genuinley improved?
i'm 34 on tuesday, mum of 4 aged 12-8 months, am i turning into my mother? i'm normally a marc jacobs, mulberry, mimi etc type of handbag lover.

i have one similar to this but with no dog on it.

i can't see what's uncool about it or is just the ones that have the dog hanging off it so people know it's a radley?

MarshaBrady · 11/04/2010 10:13

Not good.

Linwin · 11/04/2010 10:32

Fair enough if you like them but they are so not cool. I got a gift of a radley passport holder for christmas..... here is the vile item www.radley.co.uk/Product/31920_Beach_Ball_Travel_Accessories.aspx

Oliverboliverbuttbuttface · 11/04/2010 10:42

They're so not uncool! I have two very cool friends - the kind who look amazing all the time and make you feel like a lump! - and they both have Radley bags and look great.

grumpypants · 11/04/2010 10:44

well, my mother who has just retired and is actually a per una lady has just rejected her entire collection of radley as being too frumpy.....

Linwin To be fair to Radley it would be pretty hard for anybody to make a passport holder cool...the only people I see using them are the women who have pink suitcases!

cyb · 11/04/2010 10:45

me no likey.

My Mum likes then VERY much which always sets off the 'frump' klaxon for me

MadameOvary · 11/04/2010 10:51

Uncool.
I prefer this but I got mine in a charity shop for a tenner

If you have a spare £300, you could do a LOT better IMO

Needanewname · 11/04/2010 10:51

Well I'm 38, do not shop in Per Una, not wear stonewash jeans, I'm pretty sure I'm not a chav and I just treated myself to a plain readley bag - yes theres a dog but I can;t see how that is annoying (some people have too much time on there hands to be annoyed by a little dog!)

www.radley.co.uk/Product/28681_Marsden_Tote_Handbags.aspx though I didn;t pay £200 for it!

I also like the more traditionally cooler bags, however not their price tags.

I say go for the bag you like, sod whether its cool or not, if you like it who cares what anyone else thinks!

BTW like both the bags you mentioned, not that my opinion should matter!

Tillyscoutsmum · 11/04/2010 10:53

My mum has just bought herself a Radley bag after coveting one for years and never being able to afford one. She is so happy about it .... but she is my mum and not in any way cool

I do have a Radley purse, but only because it was bought for me as a present and I'm too tight/lazy/ambivalent about purses not to use it

I'm sorry but, as a rule, they are for MILs.

If coolness is an issue for you...avoid.

mejon · 11/04/2010 11:44

I have the same one as thefinerthingsinlife and had the smaller versions many years ago when they first came out. It does me, its plain and fits everything I need to carry. My favourite ever bag was a boxy, black leather backpack type bag from Radley around 10 years ago.

I am (nearly) 42 and definitely not cool (but don't shop at Per Una either!). I only really like across the body type bags - can't be doing with shoulder bags that you need to keep hold of or proper 'handbags' - or perish the thought, those types you'd keep in the crook of your elbow whilst mincing down the street. OP if you like them, who cares if they're cool or not. Just buy what you like .

realitychick · 11/04/2010 11:59

I have a big Radley bag to carry all my work stuff round in which I love as it looks good when it gets battered. Not a fan of Per Una at all. Had no idea people had such strong opinions on Radley. I just thought it was one of those makes that lasts. But I do quite like the dog and I'm not very cool. (ducks)

tartyhighheels · 11/04/2010 12:08

horribly uncool with the stupid dog and all...

BendyBob · 11/04/2010 12:13

'worn by the type of women who wear naff unbranded stonewash ill fitting bootcut jeans, slightly too short over black mid heel ankle boots.'

Blimey, must we be wearing 'branded' clothes to be worthy?

DebiNewberry · 11/04/2010 12:13

My mum liked them. We'll leave it there.

I'm not massively keen on Mulberry either tbh. The bayswater etc look like something I'd reject from M&S and £550+ shocker. The newer stuff mostly has a lot of logo-ed brassware on which I hate.

I am on a search for my perfect bag, can you tell I've been (over)thinking about it?

crumpette · 11/04/2010 12:40

I was given one in a painful shade of blue for my birthday by my painfully uncool mother who got it in a discount shop. I joined ebay just to get rid of it.
I think some of them are not so uncool- I think they are fine if you are either using it for work (quite prim and proper), or are using it to entertain a baby(leaking bottles won't horrify you, fun dog to distract)BUT as a bag to love- nope

weepootle · 11/04/2010 12:47

Very cool....................if you're a pensioner .

FunnyLittleFrog · 11/04/2010 13:09

I saw a woman carrying one a couple of days ago. She was wearing a Per Una style top with faffy bits of stuff sewn on, bootcut jeans, had funky short grey hair, purple glasses and Clarkes comfy sandals.

She looked alright but it's definitely a look for the over 50s.

EggyAllenPoe · 11/04/2010 13:49

if the dog was the breed I own, i'd probably own a Radley bag by now. But it isn't, so I don't.

The style they match off with is not quite my thing anyway - just a bit too tidy and plain, the kind of things that would accentuate my messiness.

EggyAllenPoe · 11/04/2010 13:52

looking at Mulberrys website, PRETTY IN PINK?

yee-haw?

I am suprised these are seen as more tasteful.

RustyBear · 11/04/2010 13:56

OK, this is a cool bag.

Anything else - if you like it, it suits your style and your purse, buy it, if not, don't.
Why spend all your time worrying whether other people think you are cool, you'll never enjoy anything that way.

Anyone who judges me by the clothes I wear is so obviously stupid they are are not worth considering.

moondog · 11/04/2010 14:01

Am hooting at Cyb's 'frump klaxon'.
They feature largely in Debenhams.
Nuff said.
