Help needed with extremely particular summer dress requirements.

Can anyone suggest where I might find summer dresses that are:

  1. Extremely plain, verging on unnoticeable - no patterns, flounces, detailing, not too short, not too fitted (old).
  1. Thin shoulder-strapped (hot weather)
  1. Blue or thereabouts.

I am rubbish at shopping and clothes and desperate for help. Can't face another summer sweltering in shirts....

And I am shortish and middle-sized.

how about this one here

Hullygully · 31/03/2010 12:36

Thanks, Falafel - I did warn that the requirements were extremely particular and to me that falls under "fitted." I fear I would look pregnant.

All the other bits about it were very good though, just not that bust thing going on.

this any good?

norksinmywaistband · 31/03/2010 12:42

how about this

Hullygully · 31/03/2010 12:45

CD - While not unspeakable, it's too young for me, I've got wild silver hair and wrinkles, I'd look very muttony.

Norks - hmmm, am quite liking that..

not blue but cheap

BunnyLebowski · 31/03/2010 12:52

I vote for the La Redoute one. Seems to tick quite a few of your boxes Hully and looks really casually stylish.

I couldn't find anything matching your challenge. Soz.

traceybath · 31/03/2010 12:53

The yacht dress on rubbish hobbs website.

You'll need to search for it - it comes in a pale blue but straps may be too wide.

cocolepew · 31/03/2010 12:53

tesco (I'm so downmarket)

CountessDracula · 31/03/2010 12:54

www.fashion-conscience.com/new/new-arrivals-ethical-clothing/leah-blue-green-floral-print-dress.html ?source=shopstyle this is nice but has a pattern which, may I tell you IS NOT A CRIME!

you sound like you need to improve your self esteem before you go clothes shopping!
Looking for unnoticable things is...well...a bit of a shame!

CountessDracula · 31/03/2010 12:55

How old are you and what size/height/shape (eg apple, pear)

Hullygully · 31/03/2010 12:55

Coco - no you're not, part of my problem is that all my clothes come from Sainsburys when I 'm doing the shopping and they have thwarted me by not having my summer requirements.

My other difficulty is that I am too old, short, big and wrinkled and really feel I should be in a cupboard rather than a nice frock.

cocolepew · 31/03/2010 12:56

I might get that La Redoute one myself.

I have to say Hully I never had you down as a shrinking violet.

cocolepew · 31/03/2010 12:57

My mate has loads of lovely linen from Sainsburys I'm going to go and have a nose.

Hullygully · 31/03/2010 12:58

CD - I like anonymity..I am a 12/14, 5' 4," sort of a rectangle shape with a bit of a waist and a bit of a stomach. Normally I wear jeans and long shirts/tunics (all blue) and cropped trousers in the summer. I am terribly dull re clothes.

I have swimwear needs as well, but I'll save those.

traceybath · 31/03/2010 12:59

Hully - did you look on the hobbs website - their clothes would probably be good on you.

But don't just wear blue - you need to get your colours done

CountessDracula · 31/03/2010 13:00

and how old are you?

Hullygully · 31/03/2010 13:01

Coco - I'm not really, I just struggle with clothes. My philosophy is "Oh, that'll do." I like to pass muster, but not be noticeable.

traceybath · 31/03/2010 13:01

Oh and Laura Ashley has some reasonable dresses in at the moment.

whifflegarden · 31/03/2010 13:01

. back later

Hullygully · 31/03/2010 13:02

I am mid 40s.

I do branch out into beige sometimes.

OP posts:
cocolepew · 31/03/2010 13:02

There's a lot of denim dresses around but not with thin straps.

whifflegarden · 31/03/2010 13:02

oh, and legs? Are thhey presentable ?
