Help - what do I wear to a gig?

BonyM · 06/03/2010 17:04

Ok, I've not been to a small standing gig for years but am going to see Paolo Nutini at Scala in London in April (so excited!) and don't have a clue what to wear.

I'm 43 (but look younger - honest ), and a tall (5'10")size 12.

I'm guessing it's going to be pretty hot and sweaty as only a small venue so my initial thought of jeans is probably not a great one...

Any ideas please?

SixtyFootDoll · 06/03/2010 17:13

Jeans and black t shirt. Isn't it depressing when you have to angst about what to wear at gig now?

SixtyFootDoll · 06/03/2010 17:17

I went to see kasabian in the Summer and it was a real sweat pit.
Spnt weeks deliberating what to wear, needn;t have worried as i was sopping by the time I cam out wiht 'hair bear bunch' hair!

bethjeff · 06/03/2010 17:32

you know how to fix beach hair/frizzy gig hair of course?

stick a sheet of tumbledrier fragrance/nonstatic stuff in your bag and wipe down your hair with it and voila- frizz gone!

superb if you're planning a night out after your gig.

or if you're getting your photo taken on the beach

bethjeff · 06/03/2010 17:33

omg i am turning into one of those ridiculous tip people

although to be fair it DOES work and I do it quite a lot.

BonyM · 06/03/2010 19:35

Won't jeans be too hot? Leggings and tunic sound good. Was googling "what to wear to gig" type threads/sites and someone said not to wear pumps as they might come off and get lost forever!

Your pumps might come off and get lost forever if you happen to be pogo-ing in a mosh pit (Does anyone do that anymore??!! ) but unlikely at a Paolo Nutini gig

If you wanted a safer footwear option then go for Converse with skinny jeans and a tunic

YoginiBikini · 06/03/2010 19:40

good one bethjeff

BonyM · 06/03/2010 21:34

Ok, will risk the pumps . said - you are right it is completely depressing (and slightly embarrassing) having to angst about what to wear to a gig. I just know that if I was 20 years younger I wouldn't need to ask.

I do seem to be in the midst of a very unseemly, inappropriate obsession with Paolo Nutini at the moment (haven't felt like this since the Bay City Rollers adorned my walls and I was wearing cropped tartan trews ). Mid-life crisis anyone???

Oh - great tip bethjeff, will give it a go!

Thanks Barry - that's really useful to know - I guess layers is the way to go then!

OP posts:
BonyM · 06/03/2010 21:47

Ah, I know it's not tiny but I was talking small in comparison to the gigs/venues I usually go to.

On word - Layers - jeans great, flats definitely the way forward, nice top and then layers ontop as, as gig goes on and venue fills up (and depending on whereabouts you are) it will warm up quite considerably.

Jeans, with flats or if you don't have to walk so far, heels.

Parka type jacket, so cool. Bit of a nice top underneath in case it's warm enough. bobs your uncle, fanny your aunt, Enough said.

MayorNaze · 07/03/2010 16:01

oh also if wearing layers make sure you can tie them round your waist or put them in a bag if you are standing.

is not fun to mosh dance with an armful of spare clothes

bethjeff · 07/03/2010 21:24
