Maxi dresses

monkeysmama · 27/02/2010 22:33

I want at least two maxi dresses. I have to be able to wear them with a serious bra. They have to be cotton, silk or a breathable material (no polyester however fashionable). I like black, grey, navy, green, red at a push.

I am a size 10-12 with a 34F chest, unusually short torso and long legs.

Happy to buy on line.

I've looked at lots of places (all the High St shops, asos etc) and have had no joy.

TIA

did you see this oasis one?

Clure · 27/02/2010 23:04

this too at fcuk

monkeysmama · 27/02/2010 23:05

Seen it and tried it on. I didn't like it. I looked very busty and it felt neither day nor evening. Thanks for trying though.

Sorry both a bit brown - there's not much out there that you could wear a bra with.

LetThemEatCake · 28/02/2010 00:16

MM I know it's Australian and the returns might be a pain and ££ but have a look at frockaholics - maybe the green Ginger & Smart?

tethersend · 28/02/2010 00:37

Sleeves or no sleeves?

tulpe · 28/02/2010 08:01

How about Boden?

this with vest for day

Moneyspider · 28/02/2010 16:45

well suppose that's one way to hide bra straps

reallygrumpy · 28/02/2010 21:46

The Boden one is ok if you're tall enough to wear the longer length but in the shorter length without the extra weight of the additional fabric it looks a bit 'maternity'. And the prints are minging but it's good in black or purple.

I've seen lovely ones in Monsoon and Jigsaw made of jersey with sleeves that just cover shoulders and tops of arms. this is the Monsoon one - it looks better in real life than online. I can't find the Jigsaw one online, it's similar but nicer and you could def wear a bra with it.

Lizzzombie · 28/02/2010 21:49

I saw some lovely ones on ebay recently. Will have a hunt for a link. It was a maxi dress shop.

Lizzzombie · 28/02/2010 21:52

HERE it is.
I have to wear a bra, so was thinking of getting one, but wearing a shrug thingy or short sleeved denim jacket over the top to hide bra straps.

(am thinking ahead for the glorious summer...when it eventually gets here!)

Thanks for all these links.

I really like the Ginger & Smart one but it is a lot more than I want to spend.

The La Redoute one with the flowers on the straps is pretty but a bit much for me.

I like some of the Ebay ones. Will see what I find.

Thanks all.

any good? There is a 30% off code somewhere.

LetThemEatCake · 01/03/2010 21:52

MM you would look divine in that. Nice work CHOO.

the code is FRIENDS30, I believe.

Crumplet · 01/03/2010 21:54

Whay so set on a maxi dress? They are very hard to get right and very easy to get wrong - what kind of look are you going for?

happywheezer · 01/03/2010 22:37

I'm loving your maxi dress vibe at the moment. Great minds eh?
I've bought one from Miss Selfridge that as soon as I got it out of the wrapper, the beads fell off, but couldn't send back because it was the last one and one from ebay second hand m and s for £5. It will go with anything .
I do like the boden ones though.
I bought some sparkly flats and gold gladiators to go with them.
I like them because it's a top and bottoms all in one and cotton easy to wash!

monkeysmama · 01/03/2010 22:49

Choo I love it & it will be mine. Thank you thank you.

Love that. Have just seen this too which also fits the brief and has 20% off. 'Tis Boden though.....

OhCobblers · 09/03/2010 09:55

wrap

perhaps a bit dull compared to those already linked

ConnorTraceptive · 09/03/2010 10:05

Wow loving these links! I got a couple of nice maxi dresses last year from debenhams. Maxi dresses are one of my few options in summer thanks to the lovely varicose veins pregnancy left me with

vesela · 11/03/2010 13:29

I ordered this yesterday, but am filled with doubt now - I haven't worn a long skirt post-DD, and am wondering how maxi dresses work with getting on and off trams with quite steep steps with a just-3-year-old who can usually manage the steps but sometimes needs to be lifted... not to mention all the dog shit on the pavements in the part of town where she goes to preschool.

(Am also wondering whether it's going to be all that maxi on me - I'm 5' 8", and I presume they're measuring 132 cm from the top of the triangle rather than the top of the shoulder).

Any reassurance? I like all my clothes to work during the day, every day unless they're out-and-out evening wear, which this obviously isn't.
