help me find a coat for spring

I'm fed up with my coats that always look drab and never seem to be right for the occasion.
I have a blue/pale blue Gortex waterproof coat that I wear for the school run.
A long black funnel neck coat - looks daft with my trainers.
My black puffa type coat but I think it makes me look bigger.
A khaki coloured jacket but that's too tight to do up and is a bit drab.
A lovely rain mac (tomato red) that's got a lovely feminine cut but that's a tad too tight in the upper arms since I put weight on last year.
Almost new purple check, belted winter coat that I feel I stand out too much in.

I really want a coat that I can wear pumps/boots/trainer type shoes with but haven't got a clue where to start.
My thighs are larger than preferable and I have a big but. I'm a size 14/16 depending on the style. I have long girly hair and pale, wwashed out skin (wow, I sound great don't I?!)

here

What is your budget?

luciemule · 24/02/2010 10:08

Budget about £60 I guess but could be more if it's the right coat.
Like the cut at the bottom but the colour would completely wash me out.

I'll watch this with interest as I've been trying to find a good all round jacket for ages!

I did buy this the other day but it's not going to go with trainers or anything casual!

allaboutme · 24/02/2010 10:22

Oh I love that tan mac linked to.
I have the same problem in that I wear a lot of casual stuff, jeans and boots, so need a more casual coat to go with.
I ahve found a fab one for Spring - its a studded mac, will try to find link.
What I need is a coat simialr style to the tan one but thick/padded for cold days (to replace the one I currently ahve and love but is falling apart!)

allaboutme · 24/02/2010 10:24

this is my new mac

luciemule · 24/02/2010 10:26

I want a coat that's warmer than a mac really and that will go with trainers and pretty shoes too. Tricky. I always feel mismatched, frumpy or too posh!

I like the a-line style of it - so will that style look good for big thighs/bum do you think?

what about something like this www.landsend.co.uk/pp/Waterproof-Swing-Raincoat~7045_59.html?bcc=y&CM_MERCH=IDX_00008__0000000022&or igin=index its would look ok with trainers or proper shoes

cahu · 24/02/2010 10:39

La Redoute

luciemule · 24/02/2010 10:40

Okay - so I reckon a short trench coat then would look good. Liked the red one Cahu, didn't like the Topshop coat.

I like the new look one, been after a coat that can be worn casually with flat boots or converse trainers.....i'm going to order it and hope for the best, tell me can the belt be tied rather than belted? and can the sleeves been unrolled? can't seen me wearing them rolled up.

sweetheart · 24/02/2010 11:59

ummm yes from memory I think the sleeves can be rolled down and I seem to remember the belt is rather long so you could tie it.

I think some kind of parka migt be the way forward for casual spring. Stupidly I had one which I didn't like and gave to my best friend and she looks bloomin fab in it every time I see her and I wish I'd kept it!

I'm off on the hunt.....

sweetheart · 24/02/2010 12:16

I quite like this one

cahu · 24/02/2010 12:50

Like this

and this

sweetheart · 24/02/2010 13:13

oh dear - you've got me into ordering mode! Dh will not be pleased!

luciemule · 24/02/2010 13:18

Okay -so found this in John Lewis (similar to the Lands End above) but thinking it could go with trainers and nice shoes and skirts etc. Or (b), does it look frumpy?

purple coat

OP posts:
cahu · 24/02/2010 13:21

luciemule Do you not like the Ted Baker one above?

luciemule · 24/02/2010 13:31

Yes Cahu I quite like it but fed up of dark blue (my gortex coat). My mum said it blended into my jeans and looked like a blue bob!
I thought the purple JL one looked good and also did the job of a coat (being warmer) rather than a thinner mac.

OP posts:
allaboutme · 24/02/2010 14:00

Cahu - you have got good taste, you should be a personal shopper!
I love the Ted Baker one. Its almost exactly what i'm looking for...if only it had a hood! I dont suppose you've seen any hooded slightly warmer coats on your searches??

raspberrytart · 24/02/2010 16:10

Watching this thread with interest,I am also on the lookout for a new coat as the bastard dry cleaners ruined my lovely green velvet one.Can anyone help me find something similar,please....

Bumnoise · 24/02/2010 16:13

If you/anyone like bright coloured macs there were about 4 styles in George that have been halved in price to between £10 and £18.

luciemule · 24/02/2010 16:28

loads of coloured macs in M & S too.
Do you reckon I could trainers (not sports ones but like nice walking (Merrel) type ones with a rain mac?

OP posts:
cahu · 24/02/2010 17:01

allaboutme I am satisfying personal shopper yearnings on S&B. The Ted Baker jacket is nice isn't it? Will give you a shout if I come across a hooded version, there must be one out there somewhere.

SandyChick · 24/02/2010 20:20

Sorry I haven't read the full thread just wanted to add oasis have some lovely short trench coats in at the mo. I tried a navy blue one on which was lovely. They did it in a grey/blue too. They also have some camel ones too. Sorry can't link to pics as writing this on my phone. There's also a 20 % off code knocking around too.
