How much would you pay for a handbag (yes, I know it's been done before)

I am currently looking at bags. i tend to have only 2-3 bags ever at one time; one everyday, one for summer and one smaller one if I am going somewhere posh- but the everyday one gets used 95% of the time and usually lasts me 2-3 years.

Have bags got more expensive or have my tastes changed?

It seems as if you can get plastic for up to £50, then nicer leather bags for £100-ish, and more choice in the £100-£250 range. I am not prepared to pay £500 for Mulberry as i think they are a rip off, though a nice rip-off at that.

for me £40-50 max.

Always buy at Accessorise.

janeite · 18/02/2010 16:14

No more than 40.

laughterlines · 18/02/2010 16:21

Around £40-£50 with absolute top price of £60

I think you can get some really nice leather ones for this price and as I tend to get bored with a style after a while, I wouldn't buy more expensive.

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 18/02/2010 16:26

I usually pay about £40, but last year I bought one that cost £100 (it was in the sale, reduced from £170)
I do love it, and plan to get lots of use from it.

dexter73 · 18/02/2010 16:33

Up to £50 if I really liked it. I like changing my bags so that's why I don't buy expensive ones. I wouldn't like to buy an expensive bag and then have to use it for years - my idea of bag hell!

shumway · 18/02/2010 16:43

Got my bag for £4 in Primark.

apple99 · 18/02/2010 17:10

Before I had a child then I would spend upto £350-£400 if I loved a bag. Now I am a sahm I spend upto £150-£200 max. That said dh bought me a gorgeous Mulberry for christmas and I love it so much and use it all the time so it is worth the money.

Tortington · 18/02/2010 17:11

£40

i have a rather lovely one, from a small shop.

BarbaMamma · 18/02/2010 17:20

£100 at the most. I usually avoid designer bags and go for a nice quality bag in a style I like instead - it takes £££ off the price tag.

Winetimeisfinetime · 18/02/2010 17:28

I really only buy bags that are reduced. My most expensive was about £140 but was originally £350.

I generally spend between £40 - £100. It would have to really grab me though to pay over £60. My latest acquisition, for example, was £42, reduced from £150 which I was very pleased with as I had been eyeing it up when it was full price.

I am a bit of a bagoholic and wouldn't want to pay loads for a bag as I like to have lots of different ones to choose from and couldn't justify a really exspensive one just for the occasional use it would get.

girlscout · 18/02/2010 17:42

£7 from TJ hughes. Does the job

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 18/02/2010 17:45

I have £300 one which I know I will use for years and years.

I also have £40 ones from tx maxx which will be just as long lasting

I bought one Mulberry back in 2002 which is horrible but cost me £500 so i can't bear to chuck it out, it's £200 max for me from now onwards.

vesela · 18/02/2010 20:43

I go for fabric bags, for which I usually pay £10-15 but have also paid £40 for one I really like.

The only large leather bags I like are satchel-type ones, and they're too heavy. I don't get the appeal of leather slouchy bags at all.

HalfTermHero · 18/02/2010 23:55

I am a bag freak and just bought a mulberry alexa bag and matching wallet. Tres expensive but the set is beautiful and will last for years. I am so happy with my purchase. It is fair to say that Mulberry floats my boat .

kaz1054 · 19/02/2010 13:41

Before I had my boy, I was a designer handbag addict. Have quite a collection of YSL, miu miu, mulberry, marc jacob, etc. My most expensive bag was nearly £1000. Wouldn't dream of spending that amount now as I only work part-time.

noktok · 19/02/2010 13:43

I only have one bag at a time and would never pay more than £20 for it.

If you can afford it and you like bags, why not get what you want. I could afford to pay more for a bag, but I just don't care about what bag I have as long as it is functional!

NomDePlume · 19/02/2010 13:43

Max £200

beeny · 19/02/2010 13:50

Max £400

potplant · 19/02/2010 13:54

I try to avoid leather bags so not normally more than £20 but I just bought a lovely one in TK Maxx for £40. I do have a work bag which is a overnight bag and laptop bag which was £150 but it is pretty classic so will last me forever

As much as I admire some of the top price bags (Mulburry and YSL are very lovely) I just get my head round spending that much money on a bag. Mine's full of lego, wipes, half eaten Haribos. How do you carry round all that crap without ruining your bag.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 19/02/2010 14:07

I'm so precious with my best bag (it's alexander mqueen) that I have a canvas bag I put inside it for all of the small children crap/ leaky lipsticks etc.

Yes I am sad.

bandgeek · 19/02/2010 14:18

The most I've spent is about £35 on a bag from Topshop. I do love it though, but shudder at the thought of spending any more than that.

maraisfrance · 19/02/2010 14:32

My most expensive bags cost £80 from RedDirect - one black leather the other brown leather, they're good basic everyday bags and they last years. I have my eye on a nice one from Zara (£40) at the moment. The bag for which I receive the most compliments is a cream coloured 'summmer' bag, and it cost me a tenner from H&M. In the same shopping trip I also bought cream earrings for £3 and huge cream-rimmed shades for £4, and those also get compliments every time I wear them. I recently read a book called 'Fashion Babylon' which detailed the incredible margins on handbags - that £1000 Mulberry, or £400 Anya Hindmarsh clutch cost £25 to make. So, if you love it, buy it, enjoy it - but just don't think you are getting something 'better' by virtue of the designer label, since they come out of same factories. Fashion, doncha love it?

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 19/02/2010 14:34

Gulp. I work so it's my money. But have a nice mulberry for summer and a nice mulberry for winter, along with a brown todds for when am wearing brown. So £500+ a time. But it's kind of 'essential' to have a good bag in my working circles. As i write tho am on hols with a trusty £35 white bag from accessorise which i love as much as it is so well designed.
