Black tie gear for freemasons thing

I don't have a dress and am a short arse - will knee length be ok?

Can I just get something from monsoon or do I need to make more effort?

Nine times out of ten these things are never quite as posh as REAL black tie. Monsoon will be perfect. But knee length.....mmmmmmm. Depends.....a classy little black dress with good accessories could be fine but a feeble summery dress trying to be dressed up wouldn't.

I don't always feel great in dresses. I wore wide leg cream evening trousers with heels to the last black tie do I went to. Wore it with a stunning deep red silk top.....kind of strapless with cross over straps IYKWIM (like the top of the black dress Demi Moore tries on when Robert Redford offers her the £1mil)

I wore good jewellery and had my hair professionally blow dried. That can make a big difference.

So, if I am smart the rest doesn't matter?

I tend to over-dress generally - not in a Bet Lynch sort of way, I just feel more comfortable on the smart side, even if cheaply achieved! What I don't want to do is go all ball gown if nobody else is, as much as I also don't want to be under-dressed when I have the opportunity to dress up (lots)!

love love love

doesn't need much else

gorgeous

fabulous but only if you have the right colouring

Shape, size, colouring please..........

hobbgoblin · 01/02/2010 13:26

The people I know who are going are used to seeing me in a dress even on weekday evenings (very rarely wear jeans 'out') so I just need to ramp up a gear or two from that without looking overdone or under...

not sure if this makes a difference but what I'm trying to say is, if I don't make a reasonable effort I won't look much different to how they always see me which is dress, stockings, jewellery, etc.

I'd say you need to be a bit posh but certainly not ball gown posh (or it would say ballgowns on the invite)

frumpygrumpy · 01/02/2010 13:28

I think what I mean is 'cocktail dress' would be appropriate, I don't think you need to go as far as ball gown. Unless you normally wear a cocktail dress on the school run!!!!

hobbgoblin · 01/02/2010 13:31

Yay! I could dp the venezia number (last link) I think.

Am 5'2", very petite structurally but with oversized norks (32DD/E) as still BF. Slightly wider rear than I'd like due to post natal status (we'll skip the fact that it's 6 months now...)

Short in body and long in leg for size.

Am pale but olivey skinned - usually have spray tan if dress wearing so will be tanned and olivey skinned.

Dark eyes, short, cropped which is hair v dark brown but will probably be white blonde in March when I go. actually, pic should be on profile.

I love that dress!!!! Profile? What profile? Show me your profile?

frumpygrumpy · 01/02/2010 13:37

Whilst I love the front of the coral dress, it is a bit dull from the back (I'm thinking of your bum ). Will you sit for most of the evening? If not, then the blue one has a nice back view.

frumpygrumpy · 01/02/2010 13:38

aw heck, buu the coral one. Take photos, post here, we will be honest. I love it!

hobbgoblin10 · 01/02/2010 13:41

does this bring up my profile?

I am liking the coral dress, thank you.

frumpygrumpy · 01/02/2010 13:43

nope. no profile.

Could it be than I am barred

hobbgoblin10 · 01/02/2010 14:04

Yeehah!

I think it's working.

hobbgoblin10 · 01/02/2010 15:52

Would this sure-fire make my arse look big?

hobbgoblin10 · 01/02/2010 15:53

Actually it could be a bit tarty I fear.

hobbgoblin10 · 01/02/2010 15:54

And weddingy

KristinaM · 01/02/2010 15:55

yes i can see your profile

and your lovely baby

sorry i have no dress advice though, except to repeat advice to go cocktail length

TheElephant · 01/02/2010 15:57

lol at freemasons

wtf

Floopy21 · 01/02/2010 15:58

Defo cocktail. I cater for the Freemasons & when the women are in, the very dressed up ones look a bit 'overdone' compared with the smart skirts/pretty top brigade. I do live in the country though, maybe we're a bit more tweedy!

TheElephant · 01/02/2010 15:58

does it have to be long?
long naff

TheElephant · 01/02/2010 15:59

how are legs?

TheElephant · 01/02/2010 15:59

love this adn saw this in rl and the colour is fab pufy

TheElephant · 01/02/2010 16:00

adn this is so plain and chic - would look great with blach hair

hobbgoblin10 · 01/02/2010 16:02

I think if it doesn't have to be long then I will be more okay. I'm going to go and try frumpy's coral dress this week.

Interesting Floopy - that hopefully will be the case for me then.

Re. the fact it is a Freemasons thing, don't ask me I'm just attending as partner of a man who would secretly like to hoist his trouser leg and bare his breast to anyone who'd be admiring.
