Please help me find the perfect black leggings

Hello style gurus.

Went shopping for black leggings today - tried TopShop, MOnsoon and M&S. Left shopping trip empty handed (and with heavy heart). All the leggings were hopeless.

My perfect leggings must be:

  1. long - I want them to come down to my ankles (am 5ft4 so should be easy)
  2. Properly elasticated - some I tried on today were already baggy round the knee and hadn't even been worn - I want mine to cling to my legs and give me a nice silhouette.
  3. Nice and thick - I hate those leggings that end up looking like tights on your thighs when you sit down.

Any thoughts?

Many thanks in advance...

Ooh! I'd like to know too .

pregnabrain · 25/01/2010 19:39

I bought some fantastic ones in the Gap a couple of years ago and have worn them and worn them. But now they're really past their best - I wish I'd bought a few pairs!

I have some like you just described from New Look. Thick but not too thick, don't leave knees even if you have been sat down a lot - well there is a bit of a knee but looks like a wrinkle. They are long and nice. Only problem is that i wear them so much they are now bobbly!!

princessmel · 25/01/2010 19:46

I have 2 pairs from New Look.

1 pair is great and the other pair is awful. The colour faded and they are baggy and not as stretchy.

My best ones are from H+M

jamaisjedors · 25/01/2010 19:57

Got some in Esprit.

tulpe · 25/01/2010 20:43

I have Top Shop leggings and they fit perfectly. I am 5'6" and there is plenty of length in the leg - enough to leave a little ruching (sp?) at the ankle. They don't look like tights either. Have a good look on their website. They do 3 lengths - calf, ankle and extra long. I buy the extra long.

BradSplit · 25/01/2010 20:46

indigo marks

Squishabelle · 25/01/2010 20:58

My New Look (recently bought) ones are a good length but 'bag' horribly within minutes. My old ones from a couple of years ago dont. They seem to have changed.

Cranreuch · 25/01/2010 21:00

I bought New Look black organic leggings for £5 iirc, they are really good, thick, dark, slightly long on me, but I am shorter than you by 4 inches.

LastTrainToGeneva · 25/01/2010 21:14

Another vote for H+M.
And (surprisingly) Next.

Gap have some in store now?

I want short ones - the Topshop ones fit very strangely...

iheartdusty · 25/01/2010 21:40

dorothy perkins these

blossoming · 26/01/2010 10:04

I have these which I'm happy with, long, no sagging, but haven't washed them yet.

My H&M ones have done me really well. I don't know if they do different kinds, but these are H&M's Divided label.

triffictits · 26/01/2010 19:00

I had the same problem, all the leggings I tried either went saggy at the knees or I had to keep pulling them up at the waist because the elastic was crap.

I have tried everywhere for them and then found Americal Apparell leggings - they are a bit more expensive, £22, but they are honestly brilliant. They dont sag and they stay put on the waist.

controlfreakery · 26/01/2010 19:02

whistles. more xpensive but fab.

pregnabrain · 26/01/2010 20:24

Ooh. Thank you! Lots of ideas...will have to go on an extended legging hunt now (what a shame ).

I'll let you know how it goes...

I've tried loads. American Aparrel are definitely the best and fit all your criteria. Thick, tight but not blood stoppingly so and keep their shape all day. Well worth it.

roary · 27/01/2010 09:48

AMerican Apparel leggings absolutely brilliant and stand up to very hard wear! I've been wearing (and washing and tumble drying) mine a LOT and they still look good as new.

pregnabrain · 27/01/2010 13:20

Lots of votes for American Apparel. Where can I find this brand? I live in London so can go anywhere West Endy...

I brought mine from Miss Selfridge. They are toeless leggings which mean you can either bunch them up at your ankle or you can wear them over your foot. I brought them in the summer to wear with flip flops and they are still going strong and fitting tight!

roary · 27/01/2010 16:02

American Apparel:

THey have a few stores in London, but not sure where!

pregnabrain · 28/01/2010 17:30

Ooh, they look fab.

Big problem, though. I want all the colours.
