Quick poll, just a-wondering who calls trousers "pants"?
To me, pants are what some might call knickers and trousers are trousers.
I'm northern btw in case anyone says it's just a northern thing!

I'd call them underwear.
I guess other words.... panties, boxers, trunks, undies, thongs (for thong like underwear)....

FolornHope · 20/12/2009 20:55

worse is " a trouser"

GrimmaTheNome · 20/12/2009 21:00

But Star, as I understand it you were right either way - women's pants are a relatively newfangled invention.

And then again, trying to remember what old novel I read recently to DD wherein the boys wore 'knickers' ie knickerbockers....

noddyholder · 20/12/2009 21:01

I was with my v fashiony friend today she says a trouser a jean and now a legging. She started with a boot and just kept going!

YanknChristmasCrackers · 20/12/2009 21:05

StarExpat, which bit of the U.S. are you from? Can assure you the use of fanny to mean bum was rife in rural Illinois where my mom grew up.

StarExpat · 20/12/2009 21:06

weird about making it singular...

Grimma - yes, it did make sense. But the giggles from the 7 year olds...
And the very conservative headteacher was wondering why on earth I had decided to mention that women didn't wear them in a demo lesson. I was very as I didn't mean that at all.

LetThemEatCake · 20/12/2009 21:08

I only started doing the singular thing when I started working in fashion. Before that I said boots, shoes etc like a normal person.

Now I'm a fashanker

Leonied, my mom says 'slacks'

We also had to remind her several times about loudly talking about 'fanny packs' while she was here.

AMerryScot · 20/12/2009 21:46

My DD

ScottishBoris · 20/12/2009 21:48

My dp says pants instead of trousers - causes no end of confusion. He's from the west coast of Cumbria.

To me trousers are trousers.
Pants are knickers.

My parents have an elaborate vocab when it comes to trousers and say slacks for smart trousers, pants for casual trousers like jeans or for a suit trouser then 'trouser pants'.

noddyholder · 20/12/2009 22:40

Not a leggingS a legging! As in that would look great with a black legging!

displayuntiltwelfthnight · 20/12/2009 22:44

can the same be said for jeggings, then?

the patent boots looks quite de rigeur with the neon jegging

Katiekitty · 20/12/2009 22:46

I heard someone saying about a party frock): "Team it with an opague tight" !

I barely got away with hiding my chortles (note: no use of the singular 'chortle' here, no siree)

I'm with hoho here - it's 'slacks' or possibly even 'strides' in this house. Or 'trews' when occasion calls

noddyholder · 20/12/2009 22:59

The patent boot not boots

displayuntiltwelfthnight · 20/12/2009 23:30

ooh, yes noddy I allowed an 's' to slip in there

OP posts:
Tortington · 21/12/2009 00:25

pants are trews
grundies /gruds/thunderpants = underpants
snickers = knickers

kecks = undies or knickers

ChilloHippi · 21/12/2009 00:28

I call pants (as in underwear) pants, but also sometimes refer to trousers as pants, but that's because my ex was from NZ and he called trousers pants.

StarExpat · 21/12/2009 09:14

Yanknchristmascrackers - the northeast but I'm inclined to think "fanny" is either a "southern" or and older generation term? Not sure... It does sound like something a drawling southerner would say... but I've also heard it from older people. No idea. I have never used it. Would feel weird doing so.

pucca · 21/12/2009 09:19

I call trousers - pants, and call underwear - knickers, undies. I am from Lancashire.

Iklboodolphtherednosereindeer · 21/12/2009 09:24

Trousers are pants
Underwear id knickers or undies

I've always called them pants & knickers. We didn't have five us when I was growing up. We only had 3 channels for most of my formative years so can't blame the americans

I'm in Manchester
