Quick poll, just a-wondering who calls trousers "pants"?
To me, pants are what some might call knickers and trousers are trousers.
I'm northern btw in case anyone says it's just a northern thing!

Pants are the undergarments that I wished had been more glamorous when I had a car accident and had to have my clothing cut off

Starexpat, yeah it probably is a more southern or just 'country' type thing, more common in the older generation I'd say. My mom has a bit of country twang about her, even though she's been living in larger cities for the majority of her life! Fanny was never something I'd say either

Yanknchristmascrackers - lol I just read your profile. I'm from the northeast and always say "near Canada", too. In fact, where I grew up is only a 1 hr. 15 min drive to the Quebec... so I often say "I'm practically Canadian" if I'm in an environment where other Americans are acting loud and ridiculous or in a place or situation where Americans aren't really liked so much

god this is a pet hate of mine! pants are knickers!! not fucking trousers! trousers are trousers! i can even get past if someone calls trousers troos, or strides, or even...slacks... but i hate hate hate the word pants for trousers!

there....got it off my chest!

saltyseadog · 23/12/2009 21:00

My dh says pants (for trousers) and he is from Lancashire. It really irritates me, probably b/c it's a turn of phrase used by my MIL .

Vicar you may want to really avoid going to America... if you do, just avoid shopping
