....i have noticed in the "vile trends of the noughties" thread lots of you seem to dislike fake tan!

and i was just wondering why?? as we are all aware these days, real tans are not a good thing at all, they are dangerous (risk of skin cancer) and very very ageing. i just can't understand why people would rather risk their life and looks to get a real tan when fake tans these days are so good?

personally, i think fake tan is a brilliant invention, i am a BIG FAN! i don't go overboard with it and the kind i use looks very natural.

i do agree that the orange look is terrible though. but I think that comes from really awful cheap varieties of fake tan.

afaik the main health risks of parabens are cancer-related. But it's a tricky one to do research on I'd guess, as we are fairly awash (literally) with them.

thumbwitch · 17/11/2009 11:58

Read this - scroll down to the health risks. The FDA is being conservative over it - the problems are likely to lie in the cumulative effects of people using many different paraben-containing products on a daily basis, far outweighing the safety margin.

BaronessBarbaraKingstanding · 17/11/2009 12:06

thanks, will read it later, but suspect it will not change my behaviour if most cosmetics and shampoos have parabens in as, quite frankly, I look shit without all that stuff.

noddyholder · 17/11/2009 12:09

new formulations are better they are better carriers and thus less streaky.Decleor also doesn't use dha but a nut derivative which is brown not orange and v natural God I need to get out more

deliciousdevilwoman · 17/11/2009 12:21

I wear fake tan-either a mosturising body lotion which gradually builds up colour like Dove, or St Tropez. For a special occasion, I'll sometimes get it applied professionally. I exfoliate and moisturise well to avoid going streaky or too dark a la a month in the Carribean!

I think a light/honey coloured glow looks attractive, but I don't wear it all year round.

Amandoh · 17/11/2009 12:23

You can not always tell that a tan is fake! The only way you know it's fake is when someone has gone over the top. If it's kept light then no one's any the wiser.

I had a mole removed from my face in the Summer as it showed up as suspicious during a mole check. I was a complete sun worshipper but now have to avoid the sun. I like having a tan so it's got to be via a bottle from now on. If you mix the fake tan with cocoa butter you won't smell like a .

I don't know about looking tanned all year (I don't do this) but in my opinion, most people look better with a tan-whether real or fake. It makes one look slimmer, minimises imperfections-cellulite, veins/corned beef legs and the whites of the eyes and teeth look brighter.

Kaloki · 17/11/2009 13:08

I don't hate fake tan, but I do hate the "you've been tangoed" look.

Also, I'm a goff, so always prefer pale pale skin! I've been known to get annoyed when I do pick up a tan. (Yay for exfoliaters and moisturiser)

JuanMoreTime · 17/11/2009 15:46

i LOVE fake tan

Divatheshopaholic · 17/11/2009 16:05

Just because its FAKE, i mean some people got no common sensem browner is better, they just dont understand why people gives them look.
We hair dresser who is mahogany brown, she looks like wearing brown suit
As long as you have slight colour to your skin, that fine, But baked brown is OTT.

ShutUpandDrinkYourGin · 17/11/2009 16:23

dp's friend is colour blind and to him anyone wearing fake tan looks streaky and green - like they're covered in grass stains

Kaloki · 17/11/2009 16:35

I've just remembered another reason I dislike fake tan, years ago I worked in a clothes shop, we had to try and get orange stains off soo many clothes.

If you do it well, so it doesn't notice as fake tan, and if it doesn't come off on the things around you, then I'm all for it!! Otherwise it just confuses me

CiderIUpAndSetIFree · 17/11/2009 16:51

at the grass stains

Noddy - I'm so sad - I got all excited and looked on the Decleor website for the brown nut complex, but their self-tan products all have DHA listed in the ingredients, is there one that I'm missing?

MaggiePie · 17/11/2009 17:53

using parabens when prg with a boy can be really harmful. There can be abnormalities to the sexual organs. It's serious and becoming more common.

MaggiePie · 17/11/2009 17:53

obviously nobody chooses to use parabens. ykwim... they put it into everything. even shower gel.

Riven, I am very interested in this "paraben-free" business!! i remember reading about the possible dangers of parabens a few years ago and its something i often think about.

i use halo's and horns and burts bees products on my kids, as they are paraben free. but i haven't seen any paraben free stuff for "grown ups" ie shower gel, shampoo, body creams, deodorants etc etc but if you know where to get them from please share!!!

Parabens are in baby wipes too I noticed recently.

Research has not actually confirmed a definite link with cancer etc yet but best to avoid them if you can.

I do use a home spray tan sometimes but only if I have a bit of colour to my skin already as otherwise it does look orange. I just use it on my face and arms to make me look a bit more perky as I am very pale and I don't like using less than factor 50 in the sun for fear of burning.

Each to their own I say - I wouldn't have a proper spray tan from a salon again though. You just look dirty and when they start to come off it looks awful and with me it took weeks to go completely.

JANEITEisntErudite · 18/11/2009 20:58

I hate fake tan. However, I am very, very pale and even a real tan makes me look a bit grubby. I agree with SausageRocket - it never, ever looks natural - on anybody.
