Take it in the changing room. Our Accessorize and Monsoon are combined so it's doable. I look like a mutt in a hat.

InterruptingKid · 12/11/2009 14:21

NO!
you take them into the changing room!! LOL

southeastastra · 12/11/2009 14:21

go with a friend and make out you're being loopy

YohoAhoy · 12/11/2009 14:26

Changing room the only way.

Everybody who tries on a hat in public always looks ridiculous. This has nothing to do with the hat, but everything to do with the fact that it is physically impossible to try on a hat when there is even the remotest chance someone might see you without:
a: pulling a silly face
b: doing a wierd shrugging motion/awkward neck bend
c: pulling it down too far in a comical manner

I am an expert on this at both the personal hat-trying level, and the watching-people-hat-trying level.

InterruptingKid · 12/11/2009 14:28

I have noticed recently EVERYTIME i try on something i tilt my head sideways

Hassled · 12/11/2009 14:31

I don't fit hats unless they're stretchy, so never have this dilemma. I have a huge giant mutant head. This is why I never go to society weddings .

InterruptingKid · 12/11/2009 14:32

i stand
put my hands on my hips
one leg fwd ( ala hurley) and tilt

why why why

pagwatch · 12/11/2009 14:34

Its impossible to avoid. You just have to embrace the twat.

YohoAhoy · 12/11/2009 14:35

Actually, hats are a sore point with me at the moment.

I used to look good in hats when I was younger.

Tight-fitting little beanie type hats were adorably cute on me. Caps were jaunty and stylish on me. etc etc

Now beanie hats make me look like I have a micro-head.

Caps make me look like a micro-head with a beak. etc etc.

What has happened?

I know face-shape changes with age, but surely there is some middle period between cute'n'perky and munter?

lou33 · 12/11/2009 14:35

take a friend and have a laugh at the same time

momijigari · 12/11/2009 20:46

Have a slouchy beanie to send back, looks truly ridiculous on me, I ordered it from M&S.

I much prefer being the twat trying on the hat, to attempting to find something online and then having the hassle of taking it back, never think about looking like a twat in shops, I mean it is all part of the clothes shopping thing?

I don't watch other people trying on hats - too busy looking at clothes etc.

i would love to know - I have so far avoided buying hats for this reason

i want a beret bu DP says I would look like a twat - suspect he is right

TheDampSquibOfSeptimusQuench · 12/11/2009 21:07

No, no, berets look good on everyone

They are all things to all (wo)men (as it were)

Do it

PerArduaAdNauseum · 12/11/2009 21:09

90% of hats suit me - make me look better even. It's very odd - it must mean that there's something wrong with my normal head shape, or lacking above the forehead. Oh, and I was born 50 years too late. Sigh.

moondog · 12/11/2009 21:09

How uncannily accurate this thread is.
The only time I was ever liberated from hat twatdom was living in Russia where you are considered a (suicidal) twat if you don't wear a hat.

I had (have) a fabulous beaver number that was fantastically stylish andwarm.
Wouldn't go down so well in Snowdonia thoguh.

ShutUpandDrinkYourGin · 12/11/2009 21:13

oh that's good to know dampsquib

will work up courage to take the plunge

GetOrfMoiLand · 12/11/2009 21:17

You have to realise that you will look an utter twat to passers by and embrace it.

Lol at Liz Hurley stance.

i used to love the hat racks in British Home Stires and Debenhams when I was a kid, especially the Lady Di inspired bright purple picture hat types.

brimfull · 12/11/2009 22:33

lol at this thread
it's so true
I often see nice hats but then don't try on for fear of looking a twat

my head is also mutant large

I remember BHS having large hat section in the 80's, we used to have a larf in there

CybilLiberty · 12/11/2009 22:35

One HAs to be with Ones Mum when trying on hats. I love it. Especially if a small crowd gathers to say how fab I look.

WilfSell · 12/11/2009 22:39

rofl at moondog's fabulous beaver

AitchTwoToTangOh · 12/11/2009 22:41

rofl at fabulous beaver.

cornsilkwearscorsets · 12/11/2009 22:41

I can't stop myself from doing blue steel when I look in the mirror in shops. Changing room is the only way. You have to take in other stuff as well to make it look less loony.
