Would you wear your granny's fur coat?

The weather has really turned wintery here, and this morning when I was taking much much hated black and boring puffa coat out of the wardrobe, I spied my granny's fur coat.

My granddad gave it to her for a big wedding anniversary, 30th maybe, it's lovely - chocolatey brown, knee length, slightly nipped in waist, shawl collar, and of course super soft and toasty warm.

Would you wear it or leave it in the wardrobe?

Blimey I'd wear it. HAve no qualms about fur.

VerityBrulee · 22/10/2009 19:27

I'm a bit afraid someone will throw paint at me!

CybilEngineer · 22/10/2009 19:28

Tell 'em it's fake

LaurieScaryCake · 22/10/2009 19:28

I wore my granny's in Italy on a skiing holiday

Now it's a cushion - couldn't bear to throw it away and I knew I wouldnt wear it again

I don't agree with buying fur or creating a demand for it - but I also don't agree with wasting stuff that comes your way to make some loony political point

FlameHasAnotherChick · 22/10/2009 19:30

yup wear it - the animal would have died years ago by now

Arsed · 22/10/2009 19:31

I'd wear it and i'd love it !

VerityBrulee · 22/10/2009 19:31

I did think that, but it really doesn't look fake, the hairs in the fur are too long, it just looks real.

I'm an animal lover, so I would have qualms about it but it's a gorgeous warm coat and it does seem a shame to just leave it in the wardrobe.

VerityBrulee · 22/10/2009 19:33

yes I'd say it must be 50 years old by now, flame

oxocube · 22/10/2009 19:35

no but then I don't like the 'look', whether real or fake!

Ronaldinhio · 22/10/2009 19:36

with knickers or no knickers?

VerityBrulee · 22/10/2009 19:41

I feel the cold way too much to go out without my knickers

SofaQueen · 22/10/2009 19:42

Absolutely! I wear my mum's fur coat (on public transport even) and have never been given any grief. I think it is far more ecologically sound to use a vintage fur than buying a new coat - kind of like sartorial freeganism.

Cicatrice · 22/10/2009 19:43

No. I was given my Great Aunt's mink. It was like stroking a very plushy rabbit.

But not for me. The cat slept on it for a while and then it went out.

southeastastra · 22/10/2009 19:43

no as she was about 25 stone and didn't own one anyway.

anyone who wears one is a ponce of the highest order imo

choufleur · 22/10/2009 19:47

i would. keep you lovely and warm

VerityBrulee · 22/10/2009 19:47

That's interesting sofaqueen, that noone has ever given you a hard time over it. I agree it seems crazy to buy a new fake fur coat when I have this already.

I love the feel of it. I should just wear it.

OP posts:
VerityBrulee · 22/10/2009 19:48

But why is it poncey? I'd just be recycling

OP posts:
bibbitybobbitycat · 22/10/2009 19:51

No

Unless I lived somewhere very very cold and had £0.

Ronaldinhio · 22/10/2009 20:04

my friend has an inherited fox stole with feet face etc
v glam I suppose but not for her

frightens the children though

southeastastra · 22/10/2009 20:09

well maybe poncey isn't the correct word.

arrogant then

to wear something that would offend a percentage of the population would a person would need a certain amount of arrogance. never attractive imo

LetThemEatCake · 22/10/2009 20:29

I've got a rabbit skin coat which is gorgeous. Soft like butter.

Haven't worn it for a couple of years but it's due for an airing soon, I reckon.

Totally agree with LaurieScaryCake - "I don't agree with buying fur or creating a demand for it - but I also don't agree with wasting stuff that comes your way to make some loony political point"

My policy is, if I'll eat it, I'll wear it.

Having said that, I have been vegetarian for the last 2 years, so should change this to "If I've ever eaten it, I'll wear it."

mmmmm, used to really enjoy a good bit of rabbit.

LilianGish · 22/10/2009 20:41

Wear it - then it won't have died in vain (but tell everyone it's fake!)

overmydeadbody · 22/10/2009 20:46

Wear it. No point in it going to waste now.

EdgarAllenPoo · 22/10/2009 20:50

with OMDB - throwing it away is daft, when it might be replaced by something stitched together by children in a third world sweatshop.

and they are really warm.

mine is actually too warm for all but the coldest winters night here in the blessed South.

VerityBrulee · 22/10/2009 21:15

OK, I'm going to wear it, but not into town on Saturday as there is always a protest outside one of the only fur shops in the city. Actually I think I probably signed one of their anti-fur farm petitions at some point. What a hipocryte. It has been dead a long time though. Argh,I am going around in circles here!
