Would you wear your granny's fur coat?

The weather has really turned wintery here, and this morning when I was taking much much hated black and boring puffa coat out of the wardrobe, I spied my granny's fur coat.

My granddad gave it to her for a big wedding anniversary, 30th maybe, it's lovely - chocolatey brown, knee length, slightly nipped in waist, shawl collar, and of course super soft and toasty warm.

Would you wear it or leave it in the wardrobe?

I wore my graany's beaver lamb coat as a student.....and I had a double tailed fox fur, which I wore with great abandon. Gross.

Feelingforty · 22/10/2009 21:27

It may be beautiful, but would you enjoy wearing it knowing that it would have suffered terribly ?

if you do decide to give it away, I recall there is a charity which takes them & sends them to poor people in freezing countries.

Actually, I've only gotten loads of compliments on the coat. It is multicoloured and hits the hips (I think the official term is a "chubby") - kind of like a crazy multicoloured tiger. It was bespoke for her, and I wear it with fondness because many of my childhood memories of my mum were of her in this coat.

Georgimama · 22/10/2009 21:31

My granny didn't have one but I would wear vintage fur. In fact I do.

SofaQueen · 22/10/2009 21:31

Feelingforty, why do you think the animal suffered terribly? It most definitely was not skinned alive, and probably not tortured prior to death.

jmo?

Feelingforty · 22/10/2009 22:14

How do you think it died ? Something like this ?oh come in sweet animal, let me put this poker up your bottom so your fur stands up nicely...it won't hurt.
Or maybe the coat is so old, the animal was caught it a & had gnawed one of it's limbs off ?

Do you know all about it ?

Feelingforty · 22/10/2009 22:15

In answer to the question - no I wouldn't wear it unless I was in Siberia or similar & it was my only option.

Do whatever you feel comfortable with.

Paolosgirl · 22/10/2009 22:21

No - cheap, chavvy, tarty looking, regardless of whether it's brand new or 50 years old. Makes you look like a wannabe R n B singer, the wife of a Ukraine oligarch or a WAG - none of which are particularly appealing.

And the horrendous way in which animals are kept and killed for fur also makes me feel a bit nauseous.

comewhinewithme · 22/10/2009 22:24

JMO = Just my opinion.

VerityBrulee · 22/10/2009 22:33

OK, feelingforty, you've got me.

Will google charity you mentioned.

Back to my bloody black puffa while I save up for a divine pink coat that won't make me feel guilty.

but its already dead - and wearing a second hand coat does not contribute anything to the fur industry. The animals that made grandmas coat died well over 50 years ago...

whereas those kids are in sweatshops now!

i think if you wear anything furry, people assume it is fake or actually made from sheeps wool.

rimmer08 · 24/10/2009 10:30

i would never wear a fur coat
