Today's jeans look lousy on me, what alternatives have I?

I am not especially overweight. I have an old-fashionedy kind of figure with an ok waist, but also with boobs, hips and a bottom.

Skinny jeans look dreadful on me, tapering down to little legs and feet from hips that suddenly look giant.

I don't really like flares, but I have always favoured bootcut as they balance out the hips, but they are not exactly the jean du jour, any advice on trouser/jean shape?

I'm the same as you, and I'm sticking to bootcut, don't care what the current fashion is.

DemmitGel · 14/09/2009 13:14

LOL you are probably right.

I'm pear-shaped and love straight leg jeans - Topshop Marthas are brilliant.

EyeballsintheSky · 14/09/2009 13:18

Bootcut or slouch here. I don't give two tosses about fashion. I'm 38 now, I don't have to care

DemmitGel · 14/09/2009 13:20

I am 37 so wondering is it time I started caring or else I am just going to go down the chute .

I tend to buy "boy fit" these days

LadyoftheBathtub · 14/09/2009 13:21

Skinny jeans can look cool on 20-year-old, very thin people IMO. When I see them on anyone whose thighs are wider than their ankles, they always make them look huge. If you see the same person in bootcuts their arse looks half the size! I can't understand why this trend has taken off at all and as a pear-shaped type I would never, ever wear them.

I can't call myself the height of fashion but I do think you can still wear bootcuts without looking old-fashioned or fuddy duddy - try on lots to find some that really suit you. I also like wideleg jeans, not massively wideleg but the kind you can get from boden or white stuff. Wear them with something fitted on top like a layered vest top/t-shirt and little cardie.

millenniumfalcon · 14/09/2009 13:24

there are lots of jeans shapes in the shops, skinnies aren't the only option. i used to wear enormous flares/skater style jeans but feel a bit old for that look now. i quite like skinny flares for a nod to fashion without going full-on skinny and i have a pair of loosish bootcuts that are just the perfect fit/cut/colour for me, so am not even slightly worried about how fashionable/not they are, we'll be together till they (or i!) die

if you know what suits you then look around for the best fit/colour/details you can find in that style then get a really good jacket/coat - either one that suits your style exactly, or something fashionable if you care about that - which will help avoid the "stuck in a timewarp" look.

NoahAmin · 14/09/2009 13:24

boyfit can make you look huge if you have wide hips.

DemmitGel · 14/09/2009 13:27

I don't think I can get away with boyfriend or whatever as they make me look fatter than necessary. I still need something that holds my arse if you see what I mean! STructure.

OP posts:
NoahAmin · 14/09/2009 13:29

yes mine made me look fat.
i went to gap and without looking at the "names" i tried loads on.
the best that were loose and cas were....their " boot cut" that i had never tired ebfore

DemmitGel · 14/09/2009 13:33

So is that just gap or are you wearing bootcut too, is that what "arsey" people have to do - as it were.

AnAuntieNotAMum · 14/09/2009 13:33

As a pear shape I was a bit despairing a few years ago when skinnies (or "drainpipes" as they were known in the days when I was young and twiglet enough to wear them) seemed to be the only jean available in the shops. Surely though now the "skinny" or nothing wave has passed and there's a big choice of shapes available? Every shop I got into does bootcut, if it suits you, go for it!

NoahAmin · 14/09/2009 13:33

i have a flat arse.
you just need to get into a shop in cool non flustery making clothing with the shoes you intend to wear and TRY

dexter73 · 14/09/2009 13:33

I get the Gap bootcut too and they are a good fit. Also like their long and lean.

NoahAmin · 14/09/2009 13:34

the bootcut dont look at all booty on me - think tat is the skinny flare now.
they look floppy straight to me

millenniumfalcon · 14/09/2009 13:36

these are my forever jeans, i was waxing lyrical about them on here before, they fit really well across the hips/bum (avoiding the saggy arse i tend to get on jeans yay) but then relaxed on the thigh and wide lower leg.

fishie · 14/09/2009 13:36

no jeans in gap have ever fitted or suited me. i have no hips, flat arse and a fat tum.

NoahAmin · 14/09/2009 13:37

They are on commission
go in there and say "I am not leaving till..."

DemmitGel · 14/09/2009 13:39

I have only just said your name out loud & got it Noah!

millennium your forever jeans don't load!

I'd be just blushing asking for a style called long & lean.

I suppose you have to get over your hangups. It's 15 minutes in a shop compared to wearing them 3 times s week for 2 years.

OP posts:
NoahAmin · 14/09/2009 13:40

go in there and say " help me please i am so hacked off"

tehy love it

Romanarama · 14/09/2009 13:41

Or go to Trilogy. It's about 6x more expensive but the jeans are lovely and the people are seriously helpful.

fishie · 14/09/2009 13:42

and remember not to get them too loose, they will stretch. (unless they are my sodding topshop jeggings which cut off circulation in my knee)

DemmitGel · 14/09/2009 13:43

Yeah I have a free day on Thur might throw self on mercy of salesgirls

OP posts:
watercress · 14/09/2009 13:44

Skinny flares are the way forward. The updated version of the bootcut. Dorothy Perkins (I know) does lovely ones - flattering and comfortable as they have a bit of stretch.

They look good with longer tops or dresses on top as well.
