Tops to go with gypsy skirts?

dizzymama · 26/05/2005 10:36

I think am adicted to this style forum! This time the question is:
If I have a gypsy skirt do I have to do the Victoria Beckham thing and wear it with a vest top (Bingo wings alert)
Any other ideas???

EEEKKKKK! That is what I meant to say....

KBear · 26/05/2005 12:58

Just to whizz in here and tell the world I have bought a skirt today - first one in fifteen years. DD nags me because I never look at skirts let alone buy one but today I decided to change my image and bought one on impulse eeek! Longish, cut on the bias, denim (one step at time ladies...)!.

And I'm wearing it too! Bit draughty!

yoyo · 26/05/2005 13:01

Anchovies - I saw those cardies in Monsoon last week and thought they looked lovely. Nice "wear with anything" camel colour too. I have bought loads of this sort of stuff from Monsoon and they look good and wash really well too.

Fimbo · 26/05/2005 13:03

Here's a link for the one I have just got dd in white (had to wait 5 weeks for it to be in stock!!)

gingerbear · 26/05/2005 13:07

TKMaxx have gypsy skirts for girls vv similar to Boden ones for £7.99

They have grown up ones too from £12.99 - £20ish.

I love TKMaxx.

Fimbo · 26/05/2005 13:10

I bought the Boden one as a birthday present as I think £18.00 for a kids skirt is a bit ott (£16.20 with mn discount). How are you all affording to shop at Monsoon?

yoyo · 26/05/2005 13:13

Fimbo - they have great sales! I try things on for size and wait for them to be reduced (don't have to think about packed changing rooms that way).

Fimbo · 26/05/2005 13:18

Roll on the sale then. I don't go in my local one that often as its not very buggy friendly!!

bundle · 26/05/2005 13:19

i got a lovely pink (diff shades) gypsy skirt for dd1 from hennes last week i think it was 7.99

Fimbo · 26/05/2005 13:21

Oh I saw them Bundle, dd wanted the orange one!! But I would have had to buy shoes to go with the orange then!!

colette · 26/05/2005 13:24

primark have some in great variety of colours and lenghths for £8. The sizes are quite dodgy ,as in enormous in some styles - great value especially here in Scotland when legs need to be covered most of the year.

bonym · 26/05/2005 13:52

Hmm - am I too old to wear a gypsy skirt (38)? Look younger though (or so dh tells me...)

SaintGeorge · 26/05/2005 13:57

bonym - I'm 38 and wear them.

crunchie · 26/05/2005 14:10

Sonnet my twinset thingy was Monsoon. I got it for a wedding (well the cardi) and then saw the camisole so treated myself to both pieces and I wear them at least once a week (Hot pink) The t-shirt from Gap in their sale. New Look had some too.

Sonnet · 26/05/2005 14:36

Cheers Crunchie - I have a similar thing (i Think) from Boden - will check out Monsoon

vickiyumyum · 26/05/2005 19:40

there are plenty of tops to wear with gypsy skirts out there at the moment., def agree that it needs to be fitted though especially if you are on the larger side. i've broguht a few vintage style fitted t-shirts from new look and primark. got a lovely brown gypsy skirt in mk one reduced to £8, which made me feel slightly less guilty about spending £115 in monsoon on 2 skirts.
i like the vintage look when it comes to gypsy skirts, especially at the moment with this crap weather, save the vest tops for when it gets hot (!!!) or for when i'm on holiday,.

ionesmum · 26/05/2005 20:43

Don't want to offend but at 34 I'm definitely too old for a gypsy skirt IMO. And too, er, mum shaped? KBear's denim OTOH sounds much more me, or something in linen. V. boring, I know.

cori · 26/05/2005 21:12

K bear, know how you feel. Started wearing skirts last year for the first time in over a decade. I started with Denim too. I now have five skirts including one of those new teired white type ones.

I dont think 34 is to old for a gypsy skirt, best friend has one and it looks great. I wouldnt buy one myself because I am mum shaped too.

toomanypushchairs · 26/05/2005 21:38

rather than being too old to wear a gypsy skirt am I too big? What size can you be and still get away with wearing one? Keep looking but am not really brave enough to buy. Also feel strange wearing the same kind of clothes as my dd 10yrs

KBear · 26/05/2005 21:38

I am transformed! DD nearly fell over when she saw me standing at the school gate in a SKIRT. DH said "what are those white things sticking out under that skirt" - hardy ha ha. I said "what's that red thing sticking out of the top of your t-shirt" - he's been playing golf today and is burnt to a crisp.

Can't wait to buy another skirt!!! I think it's all about shoes too - I hate shoes, am a boots girl but with my also recently acquired sandals for the summer that arrived today I am all set!

ionesmum · 26/05/2005 21:38

I think it's because I remember wearing them last time they were in fashion, and I'm not comfortable re-visiting trends as I think I'll look like I'm trying to hang on to my youth too much, IYSWIM.

ionesmum · 26/05/2005 21:41

Exactly, toomanypushchairs. I don't want to be doing some awful Madonna-style 'mini me' thing with the dds...

As for size, I'm a 14-16. I think long skirts flatter bigger sizes but not flounces.

KBear · 26/05/2005 21:42

IKWYM - my mum made me a vast array of gypsy skirts, all flowery with broderie anglaise underneath. loved it at the time but not for me now. Some people do look fantastic in them though, just not my style (what little there is of that!).

ionesmum · 26/05/2005 21:42

Yes, KBear, on some people they look lovely, but not on me.

Newbarnsleygirl · 26/05/2005 21:48

I bought a gypsy style skirt and top yesterday. The skirt is a khaki colour, crinkly and is tiered at the bottom. The top is brown with a inch trim of gold sequins around the top, also crinkly.

I was going to get one of those knitted bolero tops but have decided to be brave and go without.

They were raving on about military style jackets to go with gypsy skirts on LK Today.
