This is serious. Cropped trousers. I need RULES.

Or capri pants or 3/4 length trousers. Whatever you want to call them.

I wear these. They are very practical. I think I probably look a bit arty and fey and whimsically kookie in them.

However, it has come to my attention that other than myself, the only women to be seen wearing cropped trousers are overweight and in their 50s, usually with dreadful haircuts and flowery tops.

I also have a dreadful haircut and a penchent for flowery tops.

Please explain the RULES of cropped trousers.

i have got a really nice pair of dark denim skinnies from redoute - 7/8ths (the ones with cuffs). finish just above aforementioned ankles.

TBCoalman · 27/05/2009 12:35

Make sure you check your reflection from the side. I've seen slim, tall women with nice lower legs wearing them and they look great.

Until they turn round and it's just a huge expance of capri clad hip and thigh. Like a chicken leg.

PuppyMonkey · 27/05/2009 12:37

cankleshere

Hmm, thanks fishie - I think I may be on the way to cankles too.

So, to sum up... I am today a working example of what NOT to wear.. I thank you all.

muffle · 27/05/2009 12:39

I have one pair and they are loose linen ones. I wear with fitted vest top or print top and birkenstocks or other sandals. I'm tall and I think they look OK... however I don't see this as a stylish look, for me it's a beach/picnic/schlepping to supermarket/slobbing in garden look. To do fitted, stylish crops I think you have to have the whole outfit very together, lovely shoes, nice shades and hair etc. and just be naturally stylish which I'm not.

Flowery tops though - I don't see what's wrong with flowery top and crops, I think that looks nice.

Have to agree, slightly ill-fitting cropped trousers seem to have become the summer uniform of the older lady. Both my mum and mil live in them, with nice comfy sandals.

Mind you, I have these slim fitting ones and these 7/8ths ones and I think they look good.

Buda · 27/05/2009 12:42

Well I wear them and I don't think I look frumpy in them. I don't however look like Audrey Hepburn. I am 5' 7 but I am overweight. I wear black ones with various tops. Pedicured feet. Birkenstocks or sparkly flipflops or ballet flats. Have slim ankles. My legs are my best bit tbh so I think the cropped trousers are ok. Whatever. I'm wearing them!

muffle · 27/05/2009 12:43

Oh no - muffle - fashion age: 55

MrsASHLEYBanjo · 27/05/2009 13:04

What about just turning up you (slim fitting) jeans? I think that looks good.

mrsmaidamess · 27/05/2009 13:07

I bought a great black slim leg pair in TK MAxx, Tommy Hillfigger, they flare out slightly at the bottom which makes all the difference. DO NOT BUY TAPERED.

Grattage · 27/05/2009 13:16

aha but tapered/peg very in

mrsmaidamess · 27/05/2009 13:16

But not if you are over a size 10

fishie · 27/05/2009 13:29

what not to get

mollyroger · 27/05/2009 13:33

ah now, they'd look grrrrand with my leather weskit, sword and boots. Parrot optional o'course.

muffle · 27/05/2009 13:37

This is me. I'm 39 you know

mrsmaidamess · 27/05/2009 15:10

OMG where dod you get that photo of my Mum from?

Grattage · 27/05/2009 17:38

God i like those la redoubte ones

GrapefruitMoon · 27/05/2009 17:53

Loling at

these

from M&S!

I did get some nice ones there recently but can't find them on the website - sort of charcoal denim fabric and straight - agree cropped trousers are best regarded as casualwear but my ones, with the right top would look quite smart... (maybe they are really city shorts!)

mrsruffallo · 27/05/2009 17:57

I wear tight denim ones and I have short yet skinny legs.
I think they look best with a long tunic style top or a cardi

ReallyReally · 27/05/2009 17:59

oi mrsruffalo email me

reallyreally1 at googlemail dot com

if you don't mind

GrapefruitMoon · 27/05/2009 18:01

Where did you get your tight denim ones mrsg? DD's friend had some great ones on the other day but she is only 12 so no point asking her!

GrapefruitMoon · 27/05/2009 18:01

Sorry, meant mrsruffalo!

ReallyReally · 27/05/2009 18:03

sorry mrsruff that seemed a bit stalkerish and bossy

am a namechanger but wanted to say hello

cocolepew · 27/05/2009 18:04

I've just bought these in black they are very flattering. I like cropped trosers becuse you don't have to shave or fake tan your whole leg.

I look a treat when I'm nekkid, like I'm wearing brown socks.

mrsruffallo · 27/05/2009 18:07

Why hello Really Really!
Can't e mail you at the mo
Oooh, this is mysterious. I wonder if I can guess who you are!
