What to wear to a school reunion if I don't want to look exactly the same as the other 100 middle aged women there

Title says it all really... its a drinks reception and dinner, in September.

I don't go to many functions but have one black dress. But I suspect that there will be another 99 women all wearing LBSs. Except of course the one former pupil who is a sleb who will no doubt be wearing this

AitchTwoOh · 19/05/2009 00:15

it's yer 30 year reunion, yer no spring chicken..

KristinaM · 19/05/2009 00:15

if you find me a cool, edgy and age appropriate dress/ outfit i will forgive you

  • fitted but suitable for monster BF norks

  • not black

  • ideally with sleeves or potential to wear shrug

sigh

[Kristina realises she has hijacked her own thread and crawls off to bed, chastened]

AitchTwoOh · 19/05/2009 00:25

IT IIIIIIIS.

Tinker · 19/05/2009 00:26

Maria Whittaker? She always looked classy

muffle · 19/05/2009 08:52

bit too edgy?

KristinaM · 19/05/2009 09:53

muffy - not too edgy, just a bit strappy

the problem with all this floral retro maxi dress thing is that once you are a certain age it just looks....frumpy

day dresses are lovely but these flowing shifts just hang off my huge norks and make me look heavily pg

i know, its very hard to find something

its either fitted satin shift dresses - unforgiving of lumpy bits and high neck terrible for norks

or flowing chiffon florals

see here floral on gorgeous 21 year old

here is floral dress on 42 year old. i woudl look just like that even though i'm not pg

sigh

[aitch - i cant hear you, look my fingers are in my ears]

la la la la la [sings]

oh god carol smillie.
ahahah

I think plain is the way to go with fab accessories. They make it look like you are thoughtful and togetehr.

Colour but plain. and unexpetced colour.

as ever in these things oyu have to think " what do I want them to think about me"

Joggler · 19/05/2009 10:00

and also Kris - how dressy is it?
what kind of do is it?

Joggler · 19/05/2009 10:01

HOLD ON FGS

its in SEptemeber? call me back in August.

KristinaM · 19/05/2009 10:22

joggler - i am not a natural shopper. i need to worry about these things now [panic emoticon]

it's a drinks reception and dinner. no dress code stated. but we are all middle aged and mostly middle class, so i woudl guess men in lounge suits and women in dresses/evening suits/separates

I'm guessing a lot of LBDs. you know, hobbs, monsoon, coast. karen millen for the skinny ones

" what do I want them to think about me"

that i am cool, fabulous, slim, look at least 10 years younger ( but without trying), sucessful business woman, mumsnet mother of the year, friendly and generous

and most important of all, that I DON'T CARE WHAT THEY THINK OF ME as i am so self assured and together

OP posts:
Joggler · 19/05/2009 10:23

I have catted you.
