Thank you MNers, I have just cut my own hair and it looks

frigging awesome!

I used a method from this thread and then something similar to trim the back.
I did have same length below shoulder hair and now it is all layered and light and pretty.
And it took 10 minutes in the kitchen with a brush, hairband and some scissors!

I rarely have my hair cut aat all (last time was probably about 12-18m ago).

So if I can pluck up the courage I could have a regular cut.

If I have straighteners there is no real risk right? Cos I could always straighten it and it would just look trendy right?

MamazonFirstladyofFilth · 18/04/2009 13:51

there's a few of us that have done it and we're all impressed. go for it.

you do realise that there will now be a new haircut called the "MNer" because of this thread.

everywhere i go, if i see someone with a nice choppy layered look i shall know they are a Mner.

SlightlyMadStirrup · 18/04/2009 13:53

Not quite Mamzon...Hecates sister isn't impressed.

Has anyone washed it yet? How does it fair after a hairwash?

Hassled · 18/04/2009 13:54

DD let me do this to her last night - she returned to Uni today sporting the MNer . The actual snipping bit did age me, though - but it looks good.

MamazonFirstladyofFilth · 18/04/2009 13:56

i washed ine this morning, asked Dp if it looked shite and as if i had been attacked by a flymo and he said no, i looked lovely.
of course if he hadn't he'd be fed his own knackers, but no i think it looks ok.

SlightlyMadStirrup · 18/04/2009 14:20

Shall we run a book on when the first "Credit Crunch haircut that is sweeping the nation" article reaches the newspapers? I give it two weeks.

JackBauer · 18/04/2009 15:35

badgermonkey.
1 week is my bet!

badgermonkey · 18/04/2009 15:37

And for the record, nosy journos reading this, I didn't do it because of the credit crunch, I've always been tight (and I have cut my own hair before - just didn't know there was such an easy way of making it look good!)

SlightlyMadStirrup · 18/04/2009 15:39

my hair is incredibly greasy and needs washing before I pass judgement.

I think it could do with being an inch or 2 shorter (haven't really changed the length) but I am not sure I am brave enough and I don't really want it any shorter at the front (I can just about get it al into a ponytail.

I cut off about 6" in length for the shortest layers.

TitsalinaBumsquash · 18/04/2009 15:39

You missed me off the list

SlightlyMadStirrup · 18/04/2009 15:41

And for me - I begridge paying £16 for a trim let alone a restyle - so I just don't get it cut.

Also I struggle to find the time.

DP has just come home and hasn't noticed - but to be fair it is stuck in ponytail for the time being until I get it washed and dried.

Sounds good SMS. I actually trimmed a bit more off the back of mine last night. I would wait until you have washed it and then have another snip if you like. At least it won't cost you £30 to have another trim tomorrow

OP posts:
SlightlyMadStirrup · 18/04/2009 16:03

HOw would I trim the back without making it shorter at the front? Put the ponytail further back?

VictorianSqualor · 18/04/2009 16:10

Lol @ credit crunch.
My status on FB reads 'VS just cut her own hair!!' one of the first comments was about the credit crunch (FWIW, if I couldn't afford a haircut I wouldn't have dared do it, I had to be sure if it fucked up that I could run straight round to the salon!!)

noddyholder · 18/04/2009 16:49

Did mine first thing today had to cut it 3 times making the pony tail shorter each time before it really looked 'right' It is amazing though I have somehow kept all the length made it really full and quite cool looking.Best of all the half grown out fringe has disappeared into the general shaggy effect Dp is amazed!

MammaPiggy · 18/04/2009 16:52

i'd like to say a big thankyou to lee stafford if he is reading this (as if!)
he showed the technique on celeb scissorhands a while ago and i thought it was so clever i wanted to tell evryone!
i heart lee stafford

Saltire · 18/04/2009 16:56

Has visions of large queues outside hairdressers up and down the land on Mondaycorrecting mistakes.

MammaPiggy · 18/04/2009 16:59

badgermonkey - pmsl at 'credit crunch hairdo sweeping nation' haha!!

flightoftheeasterbunyip · 18/04/2009 17:17

See I really want to do this

My fingers are getting scissor-urges. But I must not.

a) because I do that every time I have a baby and it always looks crap

b) because my hair ONLY looks Ok if long and is also wavy so I very much doubt it will do what it's meant to and look glamorous

and c) because everyone will know I use mumsnet!!!!!

Saltire · 18/04/2009 17:40

Hands up. I tried it. Well, the front, or at least the front sides look quite short, but layered short , manily on one side, but I tend to wear a parting to teh left, so this may be it IYSWIM. I too had problems getting the back in, so did another ponytail then ran out of bands. The split ends have gone and I will do the back again maybe on Monday

Saltire · 18/04/2009 17:41

Is there meant to be layers at the back as well?

MammaPiggy · 18/04/2009 17:51

i think it depends how long your hair is to start with saltire
mine is longish and all hair fits into the ponytail so it layers at back too
but jackbauer did it with two ponytails to get layers at back aswell
hope that makes sense

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 18/04/2009 18:05

I'm gonna do it to DD tomorrow and if it looks ok will start doing mine as well!
