pEOPLE WHO LOOK GLAM WEARING JUST NORMAL STUFF - WHAT'S THE SECRET?

popsycal · 04/04/2009 19:52

Ok so I have had a bad day trudging round town with ds3 trying on dresses for a wedding and nothing fitted properly. I am a size 12 so lots of choice. But I just looked at myself and though urgh.

I have a friend who is a similar size and build as me, we shop in similar places and have a similar style. Yet she can make an asda t shirt look so glamourous. She is fairly normal look but always looks stunning,

So - share your secrets!

Feeling frumpy

if you go to get measured do you have to take your bra off?

I think I have been wearing the wrong size
I always buy 32A but using the guide I'm sure I'm more of a 30C

can you try bras on before you buy them?
I normally just grab and go, don't really try anything on in shops before I buy

popsycal · 05/04/2009 13:55

they dont make you take your bra off

I am back with a 34DD bra
didnt get measured but took advice from another thread

I have two pairs of matching knickers too

The glam ladies that I know always wear very well applied make up, hair always styled, wear accessories and always wear one expensive item, could be an expensive coat or posh bag.

higgle · 05/04/2009 15:30

Being Italian helps - I did some work for a prison education department - there were 2 Italian ladies in the art class and although they only had the a few pretty old clothes of their own and the prison track suit they always looked really good! I looked and looked to try to work it out and it was really a question of a litle bit of make up and a lot of attitude - I think if you feel georgeous you look it.

MayorNazeNotWithChoccyEggs · 05/04/2009 15:36

i used to have a french flatmate - she only ever wore jeans and t-shirts but always looked tres chic - think basic grooming does help - not so sure about confidence - the most confident people can still look like bagladies and the shyest very put together and smart...tis a puzzle...

giantkatestacks · 05/04/2009 15:56

a) being thin and b) having a lot of attitude. The way you hold yourself is very important.

PurlyQueen · 05/04/2009 16:02

Well-fitting underwear will make you look as if you have had your boobs lifted. I used to wear a 40E, but I once I had a fitting at Rigby and Peller five years ago I have never looked back.

I wear a 36H - but clothes hang much better and this size makes me look as if I have a defined waist.

smurfgirl · 05/04/2009 17:12

Good underwear def.

Also what makes a huge difference to me is wearing a thin vest (like this) underneath clothes, they seem to sit better somehow with a layer underneath.

Swooshy scarf helps make outfits more glam too. I have a cream one from Monsoon that I am always complimented on.

sincitylover · 05/04/2009 18:35

don't think you should tumble dry bras but correct me if I am wrong

popsycal · 05/04/2009 19:07

i already wear thin vest under clothes but more t odo with a feeding trick

Always have good brows and wear lipstick. Germaine Greer told me that.

TrillianEAstraEgg · 05/04/2009 19:28

GermaineGreeer told you personally? Wow.

soopermum1 · 05/04/2009 19:30

I've always found it's the folks who accessorise that look so great. and no, i can't be arsed to do it myself, thereore, usually far short in this department. also, these kind of efortless beauties, i reckon put in a lot of work behind the scenes, such as ironing, keeping all clothes mended, polishing boots etc, blowdrying hair, using products, makeup, handwashing delicate clothes and setting out their clothes for the morning, with accessories to avoid last dash scrample in the morning. nail and hand care etc

i do none of the above, unfortunately

popsycal · 05/04/2009 19:45

I had an honest look at mysself in the mirror and my tummy is waaaay flabbier than I remember it being
hmm
sit ups

right
just thinking what clothes size I am...
found this site clairehunter.com/dress-size-calculator.htm

and it says I am a size 18
I am a 12
can I be sooo far out with my clothing size? I am wearing a size 12 pair of jeans thatare falling off me
and a size 12 t shirt - tight fitting - which is fine, though occasionally I need a size 14 top
I bought a fitted size 12 dress today

oh this is all so confusing

OP posts:
popsycal · 05/04/2009 19:50

oh and this www.bellissimalingerie.com/catalogue/brasize.asp says I am a 38a

oh god this is doing my head in

OP posts:
ForeverOptimistic · 05/04/2009 20:29

That Clairehunter site is inaccurate, as a US size is two sizes smaller than its UK equivalent whereas on that site it only makes it one size smaller.

ForeverOptimistic · 05/04/2009 20:32

The bellissimalingerie is wrong too, it says I am a 34A whereas I am actually a 32E!

PigeonPie · 05/04/2009 20:55

Popsy, I too have been pg or bf since 2004!

I went to House of Colour. It cost £90 and took all day, but absolutely worth it (not only just being without the DSs for a whole day). You do it with three or four other women and although you might not be able to see the effect on yourself at the time, you can see it working on the others so will believe it on yourself! It was worth every penny. I have only bought things in my colours since and know I haven't wasted any money and have had great feedback about how I now look.
