New Year, new resolution: healthy living and positive thinking in 2009

eemie · 04/01/2009 20:02

Welcome to 2009 everyone.

This is where we try to support each other to eat healthily, take better care of ourselves and think positively.

It used to be called a 'bootcamp' but it's really more forgiving than that, especially if you're poorly (as most of us were in December) or you've just had a baby (congratulations Chutneymary).

Everyone is welcome (I would put that in capitals but don't want to shout).

Our suggestions:-

Eat healthily;
Exercise regularly;
Drink plenty of water/other clear fluids;
No alcohol during the week;
Use body lotion/hand cream/extract of donkey testicles regularly (can you tell what I've been watching with dd over Christmas?);
Get enough rest (Ha!);
Focus on three (well, at least one) positive achievements, however small, every day and try to post it/them here.

Have I missed any?

Join us! Or if you're (still) here already, stick with us!

I'm joining! Apart from all the eating/exercising thingy I have also vowed to look after my skin - better late than never I am 46! Have today stocked up on night cream and eye cream - just have to remember to use it!!!

Good luck everyone!!

eemie · 04/01/2009 20:07

Wow, that was quick! Welcome Merlin

mysterymoniker · 04/01/2009 20:13

my 3 positive achievements for today:

  • made a delicious mixed bean hotpot

  • finally ironed all those hama bead creations that have been balanced, precariously, all over the kitchen

  • cleaned the dishwasher filter, finally!

glinda · 04/01/2009 20:20

MM am in awe of anyone who tackles the hama beads without destroying the genius artwork!

Count me in! Am trying to eat well instead of the annual stavation binge cycle. Sadly, I hate exercise and I have huge career/education plans this year so I think I will be realistic and not worry about the beetroot inducing sweaty stuff!

Earthymama · 04/01/2009 20:27

i can I join please? I've had some style and beauty catastrophes in the last few weeks so have been intending to really try to sort myself out and I know I'll do much better with some moral support.

My 3 positive achievements for today:

*I went to my (much neglected)allotment and did some clearing and sorting

*I sorted out Christmas gifts and remaining food and tidied up

*I moisturised my skin lots (I sneezed while cleaning the other day and put my hand to my face, resulting in a bright red near-burn that has been SO dry and sore), it's looking a little better.

DECKmuppetWITHBOUGHSOFHOLLY · 04/01/2009 20:34

Can I join?? I was healthy exercising but are now 13 weeks prgt with no 3 and are stuggling with not exercising and not getting the natural high. I'm worried about relapsing into depression....

3 positive things today

  • Didn't get cross with ds 1 and had a good day with him (we are very similar and rub each other up the wrong way!)

  • Tidied house with dh and all I have to do is hoover tomorrow.

  • had a good day after yesterday's migraine

I am going to get a large bottle of water and use it to measure how much I am drinking as I think this helps my headaches...

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 04/01/2009 20:41

Thanks for the new thread eemie.

Ok - I'm back bootcamping as of tomorrow,

-Sunscreen at all times - I'm crap at this and my Aldi face cream doesn't have SPF. Will sort it for the Spring.

  • No or little booze in the week - I do best if I don't have any in the house, so generally have a couple of weeks off at a time and only drink if I go out (which isn't often)
  • I'm aiming for 2 x gym sessions and 2 x runs
  • Lots of water, aim for 2 litres a day - am rubbsih at this too.
  • Apply body cream as often as possible - tick
  • Use hand cream - will try harder (although did do them 2 days running. JJ - I had a hand mask thingy with cotton gloves. dh said it was like going to bed with some oddball majician. Feet are improving thanks to the Flexitol.
  • Go to bed early, by 10.30pm if poss - tick(ish)
  • Eat healthily The girls in the office are both on diets from tomorrow so hopefully we won't have our usual stash of sweets in the drawers.
  • Be happy. Am OK at the moment. Especially as I've sorting out all the glory holes around the house so feel cleansed. that's my positive thing for today.
Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 04/01/2009 20:43

at my odd spelling of magician.

CatMandu · 04/01/2009 20:47

I'd like to join in, the idea's you've posted are exactly my resolutions. Today's positives are;

  • Saw some lovely friends for lunch today and had a great time.
  • I offered to drive rather than wait for dh to offer (it IS the weekend so wine allowed)
  • Am largely on top of the household chores

I've been doing the skincare thing for the last three days included my biggest skin crime ie. not removing make up at night and aim to keep it up.

Doodle2U · 04/01/2009 20:55

Brill thread! I'm in!

JJ · 04/01/2009 20:57

I'm in. I have a lovely mud mask on my face to help with the post-shortbread spots.

My three are:
1- coffee with a long lost friend (now found, of course) which was fab

2- avoided the cookies by having some yoghurt - this decision was helped by the "why are you fat" thread

3- found my youngest's homework folder before school starts on Tuesday

Also my husband did his annual "Spa Dubiosa" in which he treats me to a hand and foot scrub and a full body massage. Twas lovely. So happiness high.

I am going to do my UK taxes this week. Am writing that for all to see in hopes that it will get done. Still have the (late) US ones to do after that.

Ooh, good to see you all! Welcome merlin, good luck with creams, I find them addicting. MM, hotpot sounds excellent, what was in it? glinda, career / ed is mental exercise, so counts, I'd think! Earthy, I'm impressed with your energy. muppet, I know what you mean about being similar and rubbing each other the wrong way and congrats on being pregnant; hope it goes well. Saggars, thanks for the info on the hands - when you wake up are they super soft? And Cat, welcome, I love meeting friends out, too.

Thanks for starting this eemie! So glad you're back!

JJ · 04/01/2009 20:59

Hi Doodle2U too - sorry, we crossposted.

DECKmuppetWITHBOUGHSOFHOLLY · 04/01/2009 21:02

Hi all!

Tomorrow I am off out to walk energentically for an hour pushing ds 2 in the pushcahir whilst ds 1 scooters. Just hope it isn't snowing!!!

mysterymoniker · 04/01/2009 21:09

hi jj, it was just random tins at the back of the cupboard - haricot, butter bean, green lentil and scraps of fresh veg, potatoes in stock (bouillon powder)

it was surprisingly tasty, some of the beans went mushy and thickened the stock

am soaking some chickpeas overnight for tomorrow's meal - major achievements for someone who used to do this every day but lapsed into terrible convenience food habits

mammyofET · 04/01/2009 21:39

I want to join too.

I feel v.fat and bloated after Christmas and want to focus on feeling healthier in 2009.

My overall aims for this month are to limit my alcohol intake (no drinking during the week) and up my exercise.

My 3 positives today were:

  • Handing out roses (the sweets) to DS and DSS and not eating any.
  • Packing my gym bag for work tomorrow (going in my lunch hour)
  • Buying all my birthday cards for January in advance (I've got tons of birthdays this month).
CatMandu · 04/01/2009 21:53

ooh JJ, I bought a mud mask yesterday as being as dh as gone to bed early you've inspired me to slap it on now.

unknownrebelbang · 04/01/2009 22:20

I'm in.

Be back tomorrow...

eemie · 04/01/2009 22:22

My positives for today:-

Visited friends for lunch, taking an apple crumble what I baked myself;
Found the burst pipe almost straight away and found the stopcock to turn off the water fairly soon after that (no damage done);
Had two olives instead of a second helping of apple crumble at teatime (close-run thing, there);
And (not achieved yet but work in progress) hand-made card for dh for our wedding anniversary tomorrow

Night night

OP posts:
Doodle2U · 04/01/2009 22:36

I did a chocolate mudmask in the bath t'other night. Dh walked in for his customery pee (bath & loo in same room and DH saves pee to coincide with the odd bath I have ). He leaped a good foot into the air - thought I'd shat in the water!

CatMandu · 04/01/2009 22:55

lol Doodle2U - why is it that they have to pee when you're in the bath, dc's doo this too. In our bathroom the loo is right behind where you're head is - so really not funny. We have an ensuite and they all moan when I tell them to go in there - grr.

feetheart · 05/01/2009 15:53

Happy New Year to 'Bootcampers' old and new.
I'm in again (and not as late as usual)

Eat healthily - not yet, school back tomorrow
Exercise regularly - see above though will phone and book tennis couse when I get off computer
Drink plenty of water/other clear fluids - serious New Year's resolution and doing OK(ish)
No alcohol during the week - easy as don't drink much, no chocolate in week would be MUCH harder and is something I'll think about
Lotions and potions - face cream routine well established (though need to do the suncream thing too) Hands and feet need work
Sleep - back to 10.30pm again from tonight or school run will be done by Mrs Shouty
3 positive achievements - 1. Did 'modelling' with children involving glue AND paint and did not shout!

  1. and 3. may need to wait until later
Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 05/01/2009 17:42

Ooo lots of new bootcampers

Back to work today. The Trousers of Truth were tight and the scales at work comfirmed a 6lb Christmas gain. Have been good so far today - just need to get past the 8 o'clock munchies.

Back to the gym tomorrow.

mammyofET · 05/01/2009 18:50

I'm back and feeling motivated by being on this thread.

My positives for today:

  • Going to the gym in my lunch hour.
  • Cooking a healthy dinner of fish, salad and potato wedges (it's on cooking whilst I am on here); and
  • Avoiding the biscuit tin in work at about 4 o'clock when i really really wanted one.
DECKmuppetWITHBOUGHSOFHOLLY · 05/01/2009 19:51

Hi all!

I had a good day (I'm the prgt one ) and;

  1. did get out for my walk but it wasn't brisk as the ground was covered in snow. Ds couldn't scooter but at least we did get out like we said we would iyswim.

  2. I cooked dinner which was -chicken stuffed with gralic, lemon and parsley which was lovely (not my recipe) dh and I had salad and the boys had chips (oven ones)

  3. am finishing my assignment (ou conversion course to convert my degree into a psychology degree. I am doing the 1st of 3 units) but I did forget a book I need to I'll need to to work some more at home.

ooo, and I cleaned the kitchen to within an inch of it's mucky-christmas-holiday life.

Mammyofet - good idea on the birthday cards, I might join you!

mysterymoniker · 05/01/2009 22:00
  • drank plenty of water today

  • remembered to moisturise!

  • ordered veg box delivery for Weds
