Fancy dress help please

Not quite style and beauty but I hope you'll indulge me please.

I need to go to work (secondary school) dressed as a book character in a couple of weeks. I'd like something slightly gothic looking perhaps, or quirky. In the past I've been Medussa, a witch from Macbeth, Charlotte's Web (yes, the web!), Miss Havisham (that was when I could still fit into my wedding dress AND breath simultaneously!). I have a full length black ball gown, which may be useful. I'm short, size 12, brunette bob (although i have quite an extensive collection of fancy dress wigs!) and a bit norky, which I would like to not draw attention to!

Tia.

I'm going to a fancy dress party next week - this is the website I used for ideas...

costumes

janeite · 09/11/2008 19:19

Thanks. Who are you going as? Some of those costumes might be a bit too risque for a teacher!

Random thoughts ....

Mrs Danvers
Cruella de Ville (have you got the right wig?)

spicemonster · 09/11/2008 19:30

Character from Harry Potter? Can't think of any of their names

paddingtonbear1 · 09/11/2008 19:38

I've got a star trek dress and dh a top.. it's a sci fi party (my friend's 40th).

janeite · 09/11/2008 19:43

Bunch of grapes sounds fun - but it's not a book character!

Have done a HP one before, sorry - forgot to say that one! I was Tonks.

Cruella de Ville could be a possibility; although no, I haven't got a suitable wig!

Mrs Danvers maybe not quirky enough.

Ball gown - hitched up with stripy tights, witches hat - winny the witch. Or are you secondary ?

BoccaDellaVerita · 09/11/2008 19:52

No, and you'd probably have to hang a label round your neck saying 'Mrs Danvers'.

The Queen in Snow White? She's pretty gothic.

janeite · 09/11/2008 19:54

Yes that's a good idea. I was just wondering about a gothic version of Snow White actually, with a red head band and an apple necklace maybe?

Any more?

Suggy - am secondary.

What about Aunt Josephine from Lemony Snickets series of unfortunate events, I recall from the film she wore a long black dress and you could put your wig up in a bun.

janeite · 09/11/2008 19:56

Aunt Josephine is a brilliant idea - but I've been her before too! Not for school but dd had a Lemony Snicket party a few years ago. Any excuse for fancy dress!

Grand High Witch from the witches (before she takes off her wig?)

like Mrs Danvers too.

Could you be Scarlett O'Hara in her (all-too-brief)mourning phase?

singyswife · 09/11/2008 19:58

Hiya

Paint your face orange, get some dungarees and a green wig and go as an ooompa looopa (Spelling)

janeite · 09/11/2008 19:59

I love witches - but have done them too many times already. Scarlet O Hara a possibility but tbh the pupils almost certainly won't have heard of her (inner-city secondary).

Or a red and white tall hat and a black bowtie and go as tr Seuss.

MadMazza · 09/11/2008 20:01

What about a nun if you have a black dress?

janeite · 09/11/2008 20:03

I want to be beautiful and gothicy please - not orange!!!

Somebody else has done The Cat In The Hat before.

Been Googling .....

... in similar vein, Maleficent from the Sleeping Beauty.

Slouchy · 09/11/2008 20:05

Long shot here...can you borrow a toy monkey? If so put it on your shoulder and be Mrs Coulter from Northern lights etc.
very glam

BoccaDellaVerita · 09/11/2008 20:05

Morticia Addams (it was originally a comic strip, wasn't it?)

janeite · 09/11/2008 20:06

Ooh ooh am liking Mrs Coulter - I have a blonde wig - buuuuuuuuut I do look hideous blonde. And I am about 5 feet shorter than Nicole Kidman!
