Fancy dress help please

Not quite style and beauty but I hope you'll indulge me please.

I need to go to work (secondary school) dressed as a book character in a couple of weeks. I'd like something slightly gothic looking perhaps, or quirky. In the past I've been Medussa, a witch from Macbeth, Charlotte's Web (yes, the web!), Miss Havisham (that was when I could still fit into my wedding dress AND breath simultaneously!). I have a full length black ball gown, which may be useful. I'm short, size 12, brunette bob (although i have quite an extensive collection of fancy dress wigs!) and a bit norky, which I would like to not draw attention to!

Tia.

Sorry try this www.anytimecostumes.com/ecommerce/control/product/~product_id=021901880BKRD

Singy - I teach in a secondary school; somehow I don't think a mini-skirted Red Riding Hood would be quite appropriate! But thanks for looking. Somebody has been Little Red RH before, anyway; otherwise a much toned down version might have been a good idea.

Sorry; didn't mean to sound sniffy, so hope it didn't come across that way.

The last time we had this at our school one of the teachers was cruella (it was actually the male head teacher) and several of the teachers were dalamtions, it went down well and they all looked the part.

janeite · 09/11/2008 20:22

Love the sound of male headteacher as Cruella!

What about this but a female version www.anytimecostumes.com/ecommerce/control/product/~product_id=0035A16466

LOTR is a really good suggestion. I have some pointy ears! Maybe Arwen?

Yeah they are all pretty much gothicy arent they. Why not google lord of the rings images and see what you can come up with. Good luck, hope you have fun.

janeite · 09/11/2008 20:32

Thanks ever so much for your help.

Still open to toher suggestions; it's not for a few weeks so I've got time to play around with a few ideas.

Someone from A Sequence of Unfortunate Events? The illustrations have that Gothic/quirky look to them.

janeite · 09/11/2008 21:46

The illustrations are fab aren't they? And the filming, especially the sets, was amazing.

What about the Ice Witch from the Chronicles of Narnia? You wouldn't necessarily have to go as pale as Tilda Swinton in the movie - after all it's a book character that you're after, not a movie one Here is one version that I prefer Ice witch Much more gothic and also more flattering! This is how I think the Ice Witch should look, I didn't really like her in the movie. You could perhaps even use your black gown, decorated with icicles (made from silver card paper for example)?

Different style altogether: Nancy from Oliver? Or Eliza from My Fair Lady - originally Pygmalion

janeite · 10/11/2008 18:39

Ice Witch is a fab sugegstion; perhaps my fave so far. Thanks.

Great, I've been wondering if you'd like it! I do too, think there are lots of possibilities (am liking the idea of silver/crystal/icicles...) - may have to use it myself some day!

Good luck, and do let you know what you do in the end!

janeite · 10/11/2008 20:28

Should be lots of icicle type tree decorations in the shops now too, I think.
